ButBrancaccio’sthirdandfinalgoalofthegamemayhavebeentheturningpointforMaryland.Terps’sophomoreattackmanDannyGallagherwaspenalizedforanillegalequipmentviolationandwasassesseda3:00unreleasablepenalty.Maryland’sdefenserosetotheoccasion,allowingjustonegoalinthosethreeminutestoswingthemomentumbacktotheTerpsheadingintothesecondhalf.

OnceagainitwasRitzthatsparkedtheMarylandoffense.TheWayne,Pa.,nativescoredback-to-backgoalsjusttwominutesapartforhisthirdcareerhattrick.RitzfiguredinonthenextMarylandscore,assistingonseniorMichaelPhipps’man-upgoaltobringtheTerpstowithintwogoalsat6-4.
Marylandclosedoutitsthird-quarterscoringbarragewithabangatthe4:06markwithfreshmanlongpoleBrianFarrell’sthirdgoaloftheseason.FellowfreshmanBrynHolmesstartedtheplaybycausingaturnoverthatwaspickedupbyFarrell.The6-foot-4,240-poundFarrellthenracedthelengthofthefieldandbeatHoyagoalieMilesKasswithabouncingshot.
TheTerpsclosedthescoringgapcompletelywiththeirsecondman-upgoalofthegameatthe13:04mark.SeniormidfielderChrisFeifsscoredhissecondgoaloftheyearoffofanotherassistfromRitz.
TheHoyasfinallyputanendtotheirscorelessstretchatthe9:02markofthefourthtotakea7-6lead.DanD’Agnesscoredtheeventualgame-winner,hissecondgoalofthegame,offofAndrewBaird’ssecondassistontheafternoon.
WithGeorgetownclingingtoa7-6lead,theTerpsappearedtotiethegameagainwith6:44leftinthefourthquarter.JuniormidfielderDrewEvansdodgedaroundaHoyadefenderandbeatKassoverhisleftshoulder,butofficialsruledhimtohavesteppedinthecrease,nullifyingthegoal.
BrendanCannonpickeduphislonegoalofthegamewith25secondsremainingonanempty-netshottocapthescoringat8-6andgivetheHoyastheirfirst-everwinoverMarylandinseventries.

DuringhistenureatMaryland,notonlyhastheprogramcontinuedtobeamongthesport’selite,butTerrapinplayershavealsothrivedandreceivednationalattention.InthepastsixseasonsunderCottleatotalof20Terpshaveearned38All-Americahonors.TwoTerps,MichaelHowleyin2003andLeeZinkin2004,wontheSchmeisserMemorialCup,whichisgivenannuallytothenation'soutstandingdefender.In2006,JoeWaltersbecameMaryland’sall-time leader ingoalsandpointsandwasnamedthewinneroftheJackTurnbullMemorialAwardasthenation’stopattackman.
ThebackboneofCottle’ssuccesshasbeenastrongworkethicandanemphasison“student-athletes.”SixofCottle’sTerrapinplayersearnedUSILAScholarAll-Americahonors,including2005graduateIanHealy,whobecamejustthethirdMarylandstudent-athletetobeinductedintoPhiBetaKappa,thenationsoldestandmostprestigiousacademicsociety.
Cottle,52,wasnamedtheeighthcoachinthestoriedhistoryofMarylandlacrosseonSept.26,2001,takingthereinsfromtheACC’sall-timewinningestcoach,DickEdell,whoretiredonSept.3,2001after18yearswiththeTerps.
Lastseason,whichwasviewedbymanyasa“rebuildingyear”fortheTerpsprovedtobeoneofCottle’sfinestseasonsasaheadcoach.Withaninexperiencedoffenseandaninjury-riddleddefense,CottlemanagedtoleadMarylandtoa10-6recordandaNo.7-seedintheNCAATournament.
TheTerpsreturnedtotheNCAAFinalFourforthesecondstraightseasonin2006.Cottle'ssquadfinishedtheyearwitha12-5recordandearnedMarylandtheNo.2seedintheNCAAtournamentforjustthesecondtimeinschoolhistory.SevenTerrapinplayersearnedAll-AmericahonorswithWaltersandmidfielderBillMcGlonebeingfirstteamselections.WalterswasalsonamedtheACCPlayeroftheYearforthesecondtimeinhiscareer.
In 2005 Cottle directed Maryland to its ninth trip to the NCAASemifinalsanditssecondstraightACCtournamentchampionship.TheTerpsendedtheseasonwithanoverallrecordof11-6,butfinishedtheseasonwinningsixoftheirlastsevengames.SixMarylandplayerswerenamedpostseasonAll-Americans,includingMcGlone,whowasafirstteamselection.Cottle’sprogramalsoearnedanotherhonorinJuneof2005whenWalterswasnamedtothe2006U.S.NationalTeam,theonlycollegeplayertobeselectedtothe23-manroster.
Cottleguidedthe2004Terpstoa13-3recordandtheirfirstACCchampionshipsince1998.MarylandfinishedtheseasonrankedNo.3 in the USILA poll and made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAAtournament. Eight Terrapin players earnedAll-America honors,includingthreefirstteamhonorees.
In2003heledMarylandbacktotheNCAASemifinalsforthefirstsince1998.TheTerpshadastellarseason, includingaNo.3finalranking.MarylandpilednumerousaccoladesastheyhadeightUSILAAll-AmericansincludingHowley,whowasafirst-teamhonoree.TheTerpsposteda12-4recordin2003andgaveCottlehisthirdtriptothenationalsemifinals.
HeledhisLoyolateamstotop-10finishesineachhis14seasons.The Greyhounds finished with a winning record the final 18 yearsofhistenure,datingto1984.Loyolaalsoplayedin14consecutiveNCAATournaments, entering the 1998 and 1999 tournaments astheNo.1seed.
A Baltimore native, Cottle took over a struggling Greyhoundprogram in 1983.Sincepostinga first-year recordof 5-9, his onlylosingseasonin25yearsasacollegeheadcoach,Cottle’sLoyolateamsreeledoff18consecutivewinningseasons.The1998team’s13-2campaign,whichendedwithaberthintheNCAAsemifinals,sawLoyolareachaNo.1nationalranking,andearntheschool’sfirstNo.1seedintheNCAATournament.
In 1988 the Greyhounds began a run of 14 consecutiveNCAA tournament appearances. Loyola advanced to the nationalchampionship game in 1990, and made 10 NCAA quarterfinalappearancesunderCottle.
The1990team,apotentmixofseasonedveteransandtalentedunderclassmen,marchedallthewaytotheNCAAchampionshipgame.In the semifinals the Greyhounds staged an incredible comebacktobeatYale,14-13, inovertime.Syracuse, the two-timedefendingchamps,endedLoyola’squestforthenationaltitle,buttheGreyhounds’1990seasonalwayswillberemembered.
In 1994 Cottle guided the Greyhounds to one of their bestseasonsever.Loyolafinished11-2,recordingwinsagainstfourNCAAtournamentteams.TheGreyhoundsearnedthenation’sNo.1rankingforonlythesecondtimeintheirhistory.Loyolaconcludedtheregularseasonwitha17-15victoryoverJohnsHopkins,theprogram’sfirstvictoryeveragainsttheBlueJays.
Cottle’s1988squadfinishedwitha12-2record,earningLoyola’sfirst NCAA Division I tournament berth. Loyola defeatedAir Forcefor its first NCAA postseason victory before losing to Penn in thequarterfinals.The Greyhounds concluded the season ranked fifthin the nation, and Cottle earned USILA Coach-of-the-Year honors,becomingthefirstcoachinLoyolaathletichistorytoreceiveanationalaward.CottlewasalsoselectedtocoachtheSouthteaminthe1988North-SouthAll-StarGame.
The 1989 Greyhounds became the only Loyola lacrosse teamto complete an undefeated regular season.The Greyhounds beatfournationallyrankedteamsenroutetoaperfect10-0mark.Loyolawasrankedthirdinthefinalpoll,behindeventualnationalchampionSyracuseandJohnsHopkins.
Cottle came to Loyola in 1982 after leading Severn School toa 26-9 record and consecutive Maryland ScholasticAssociationchampionships. Prior to his success at Severn, Cottle served fortwoyearsasagraduateassistantcoach,assistantvarsitylacrossecoachandphysicaleducationinstructorathisalmamater,SalisburyStateUniversity.
One of the finest players in Salisbury State history, Cottle wasenshrinedintotheschool’sAthleticHallofFamein1989.Duringhiscareerhere-wrotetheNCAArecordbook,whileearningAll-Americahonorsthreetimes.Hestillranksamongthetopthreeingoals(179),assists(123)andpoints(302)inSeagullhistory.In1975Cottleledthenationinscoringandwasjustthesecondplayerincollegiatelacrossehistorytoscoremorethan100pointsinasingleseason.Followinghisseniorseasonin1977,heservedascaptainoftheSouthteamintheNorth-SouthAll-StarGame.
Cottle received his Bachelor of Science degree in physicaleducationin1978fromSalisbury.
HewasanassistantcoachforTeamUSA1994,whichwontheworldchampionship inManchester,England.Cottlehasaddressedmanylacrossegatheringsacrossthecountry,includingtheUSILACoaches’Convention,andheservesasamemberoftheAll-AmericaSelectionCommittee.InFebruaryof1998hewasinductedintotheBaltimoreChapteroftheLacrosseFoundation’sHallofFame.
