Crumlin West of Ireland Golf Classic

John McGinley, Chairman of the Organising Committee, presenting cheques for €14,000 to Alan Higgins of The Children's Hospital Crumlin and €8,000 to Aine Binchy of the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit, UHG. This represents the proceeds of the West of Ireland Golf Classic held in May in Galway Golf Club. Thank you to all who contributed to the success of this event, now in it's 33rd successive year in Galway Golf Club.

The Caddy After an unbelievable weekend of weather and brilliant golf, 28 players made it through to the 9 Hole Play Off tomorrow night at 6PM. With 10 players on 38pts or better the winner is expected to come from that lot. The remainder on 37/36 cannot be totally ruled out but it would take something special to get past the Top Ten. The Caddy fancy is most definitely the “tried and tested” Ted Duffy. Runner up last year Duffy has all the attributes to bag this one. That being said there is some real class at the top with Junior Cup

stalwart Padraig O’Neill playing off 6 is joined on 40 pts by Hugh Heskin and our Competition Secretary John McDonnell. McDonnell has 8 shots and with a bit of run on the ball will fancy his chances. Heskin is an accomplished 9 handicapper and getting 5 shots will most definitely be a factor. Noel Maher and Gerry Davy carry the hopes of the Senior Section and rule them out at your peril!!! Cathal Nolan has a 5 pts advantage for the Gross Prize but a repeat of his scoring last Sunday will put him in contention for the overall. Hard to look beyond those but Gerry Cox could be the Ringer!! Mulhollands will be Open for business in the Bar from 45pm tomorrow. Good Luck if you punt!!! JB Carr: The return leg match against Castlebar goes ahead on Monday with a 3.30PM throw in. Trailing by 3/2 Galway will be hoping to secure 4 wins to advance to the Connacht Final. Barton Shield: Galway GC will play Athenry, the reigning All-Ireland Champions in the Connacht Semi-Final after qualifying in second position last Saturday in the Qualifier in Claremorris. Enniscrone were the surprise packets in finishing 1 shot of our lads with a combined +3 score. They will play Co Sligo in the other Semi Final. Our top pairing of Cathal Nolan/Stephen Brady although +4 for the day played very solid golf ,hitting 16 greens in regulation but struggled on the very fast and undulating greens. The second pairing of Eddie McCormack/Liam Power had no such difficulties and with 4 birdies and just 3 bogies were the modicum of consistency all day. Gerry Cox and his squad can now look forward with confidence to both Barton Shield & Senior Cup semi Finals in Westport on Saturday 10th (BS) and Sunday 11th (SC) August. Hartmann Cup: Hartmann Cup Final is down for decision this evening with what will be an exciting contest between the lesser known but very impressive Eoin Power. Power brother of our Senior Cup man Liam takes on Sean O’Connor. Power receives 3 shots in what promises to be a great Final. Eoin defied the Caddy’s curse when getting past James Duggan Jnr in the previous round so I am going to stick with!! Best of Good Luck to both players. Jack O’Sullivan: Home advantage really told last night when Tommie Godwin’s came up just short against the Isles in a thrilling contest that went all the way to the 20th in the deciding match. Having secured home victories with Padraig O’Neill/David Hickey and Mike Hennelly/Padraig Moran it was left to the lads abroad to try and squeeze a match. Alan Morgan /Martin Coyne did their very best but succumbed at the 2nd Tie Hole.

Just a word on Tommy Godwin. He is by a distance Galway GC best supporter. Be it Pierce Purcell or Senior Cup, Tommy is there supporting our teams. Claremorris last Saturday with the Barton Shield and the previous weekend all day Saturday & Sunday with the Junior Cup lads in Loughrea. Your support is very much appreciated by all the Team’s. Tis a pity there’s not more like you!! Thanks Tommy. Megan Harty / Leo Kilfeather: Just a short mention about Megan and Leo who represented the Club so well this week. Megan qualifying in the Irish Girls and the progressing to last 16 with a brilliant win over an opponent who has a handicap 6 shots lower than Megan. You surely flew the Flag for Galway. Congrats Megan Leo Kilfeather comfortably qualified at the Munster U16 Boys Championship in Limerick. Followed up a brilliant 76 with a creditable 80 on day 2. Leo is most definitely one for the future. All his time spent at practice is paying off. Congrats Leo.

Car Draw In Aid of NBCRI – Please see below We are holding a car raffle this year to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Research Institute and we are looking for volunteers to help us sell tickets at the Galway Races from July 29th – August 4th 2019. Volunteers will be provided with entrance to the race course and a meal voucher. National Breast Cancer Research Institute is a national charity that funds a comprehensive research programme at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The Breast Cancer Research team at the Lambe Institute for Translational Research at the National University of Ireland, Galway focuses on important areas including personalised medicine, breast regeneration, and innovative diagnostics and therapeutics. They allow us to understand the biology of breast cancer, improve insights into genetic causes, identify future targets for therapy and improve quality of life. In Ireland, 1 in 9 women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime with over 3,200 cases diagnosed here each year. The charity’s aim is to greatly improve the future outcomes for breast cancer patients through research. Our charity is entirely dependent on donations from individuals, businesses, charity events, and community-based fundraising. Every helping hand we have as part of our team increases the potential to improve outcomes by enhancing our ability to raise the funds and we are really grateful for all the support. If this is something your staff may be interested in, please contact Philip on (087) 255 7944 or the office on (091) 863917 for further details.

Health & Safety for Golfers Remember Your Responsibilities please.

Use the bell on the 15th hole to indicate when it’s safe to play.

Follow all Course Safety Signage.

Ensure proposed landing areas are clear of fellow golfers

before playing your shots, especially on holes 7, 12, 15 & 17

Stand a safe distance from the person swinging the club.

Yell “Fore” to warn fellow golfers of errant shots whether hit

by you or not.

Do not play under the influence of an intoxicant.

Be aware of your surrounding at all times.

Take care near all water hazards.

Exercise caution around all moving vehicles on the course and

in the carpark

Pace of Play Our agreed “Time Par” in Fourball Play is; 4 Hrs & 15 Min’s for 18 Holes 2 Hrs & 10 Min’s for 9 Holes This is not a Target – It is the Maximum Time Allowed

Suggestions for Improved Pace of Play

Allow Faster Groups to Play Through in Good Time

Be Ready to Play when it is your Turn

Agree with your Playing Partners a “Ready to Play” System

i.e. If you are Ready & it is Safe then Play! i.e. No “Honour” (except in Match play) – the 1st Player ready Plays i.e. Players should play their own ball before helping to look for a lost ball i.e. When not playing your shot you should be preparing to play your shot

Position Bags & Carts Correctly for a Quick Exit from Hole

Mark Scorecards between Holes as you Walk

If in Doubt Play a Provisional Ball

Watch the flight of the Ball Carefully

If each player in a fourball takes an average of just 5 seconds less to play each shot and if

each players shoots +10 (80)
