Richard Artschwager must be counted among the undisputed heroes of contemporary art in America. His oeuvre develops in the 60ties which eventually see him among the artists of the Leo Castelli Gallery including Liechtenstein, Johns, Judd, Nauman, Rauschenberg and the other greats of this famous stable. His artistic language is unique and - as Richard Armstrong notes - employs two principal tools: seemingly functional, body-scale objects and framed grisaille paintings that refer, literally and metaphorically, to the space inside and outside of themselves.

Door } is one of Artschwager's major successes and a seminal work in his rich oeuvre. It was first shown in 1984 in the famous MATRIX exhibition series at the Berkeley Art Museum and at the Wadsworthe Atheneum and later included in several major international retrospective exhibition of the artist.

This wonderful work has been in the private collection of its first owner since 1985 and has not been offered in the art market since.

During his studies at the California Institute of the Arts, in the 1970s, Jonathan Lasker took up the challenge of questioning and redefining the painterly medium. He subsequently devised a self-referential painterly system with a vocabulary of sign-like forms and colours which he has repeatedly varied and reformulated to this very day. Lasker´s pictorial means range from a scriptural, seemingly intuitive drawing to pastose, protruding, three-dimensional paint applications that create a tension with the planar composition of the background surface. Jonathan Lasker (born in Jersey City, New Jersey, 1948) studied at the California Institute of the Arts (1977) and the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he still lives and works today.

Allan McCollum was born in California in 1944, and lives and works in New York. With his extremely incisive works, he has become one of the most outstanding conceptual artists of his time. His artistic work is defined by his occupation with the phenomenon of individuality and the mass as a sociological and artistic problem of defining identity. His works are often characterized by an extreme accumulation of individual pieces, such as drawings or sculptures.

In 2005 McCollum first introduced to the public his most extensive concept: The Shapes Project.It is based on a system he created to design and produce a unique emblem for every person on the planet, without repeating. These unique emblems in theory can take any physical form. They exist as individual prints, as artificial marbel and plywood sculptures, and in a number of other designs.

At EXPO Chicago Galerie Thomas Schulte presents for the first time in the U.S. the stunning latest version of Shapes - symmetrical spinoffs handcrafted from ash wood by artisans in a small town in east Germany.
