landed the Gr.3 Blue Diamond Preview yesterday. The two-year-old raced in midfield, but managed to find a gap at around the 200m mark and shot through to take a narrow lead with 50m to run and held tough to deny Pierro’s daughter Tulip, with the winning margin being a short-head. There was a half-length back to Chateau Griffo (Sebring) in third. The winner had broken her maiden at Flemington on New Year’s Day.

Promising Run’s placed three-year-old half-sister Beautiful Escape (Elusive Quality) is catalogued as Lot 193 in the Tattersalls February Sale.

There was a close finish to the Gr.2 Cape Verdi, a one-mile turf contest for fillies and mares, with just over a length separating the first four home. Coming out best by half a length was Very Special (Lope De Vega), while Opal Tiara (Thousand Words) also headed Muffri’Ha (Iffraaj) close home to collect second. The winner had run well on this course last winter, with wins in this race and the Gr.2 Balanchine, and, on her only start in Britain last season, finished second behind triple Gr.1 winner Alice Springs (Galileo) in the Gr.1 Falmouth Stakes.

Bred by Ballylinch Stud, who stand her sire, and sold by the stud for 280,000gns at Tattersalls as a yearling, she is a half-sister to the ill-fated dual Gr.1-winning two-year-old Chriselliam (Iffraaj), out of a half-sister to the Gr.1-winning fillies Eva’s Request (Soviet Star) and Priory Belle (Priolo; grandam of Gr.1 winner Opinion and Gr.3 winners Fox Hunt and Anam Allta). The second dam, Ingabelle (Taufan), was a Gr.3 winner in Ireland.

FIRST FOALS FOR JULY STAKES WINNER ANJAALRathasker Stud has announced that the first foals by Anjaal, the Gr.2 July Stakes-winning son of Bahamian Bounty, who was bred by Carmel Stud and raced by Hamdan Al Maktoum, are on the ground, with Madeline Burns saying: “We are extremely pleased to hear great reports from clients on their first Anjaals. A number of his first foals have been born to breeding right holders such as the Morrins, the McEnerys, the Flannerys, and the Hodges, all who have given him fantastic support. Anjaal covered over 190 mares in 2016 and a large part of his appeal is as a speed outcross for Danehill/Danzig line mares.”

Among the first foals is a filly out of the winning Dansili mare Mrs Beeton, born on 11th January at Pier House Stud, with Ger Morrin saying, “She is physically very similar to her father being strong and correct with a nice length of rein.”

Gerry Flannery said of the colt born at Esker Lodge Stud on

16th January out of the winning Efisio mare Pearly Brooks, “It is the best foal the mare has ever produced, with great shape and good bone.”

AL SHAQAB’S SHALAA SET TO SHUTTLE TO ARROWFIELDAl Shaqab Racing has announced that its European Champion Two-Year-Old Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) will be shuttling to Arrowfield Stud in Australia for the 2017 southern hemisphere breeding season.

“We’re excited to stand Europe’s dominant sprinting two-year-old Shalaa at Arrowfield in association with Al Shaqab, alongside their Champion Sprinter/Miler Olympic Glory [Choisir]. Shalaa displayed the high quality, early-maturing speed that Australian breeders demand and offers a fresh take on the Danzig sire-line that is clearly working here,” says Arrowfield’s Chairman John Messara.

Shalaa had a near perfect record of six consecutive wins over 1200m, including two Gr.1s, in eight runs. His outstanding two-year-old season started with a first victory in May over 1200m before taking back to back, the prestigious Gr.2 July Stakes at Newmarket and Gr.2 Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood in July. He then stepped up in class to defeat all opposition in the Gr.1 Prix Morny and Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes, earning the title of European Champion Two-Year-Old.

With an early three-year-old career doomed by a pelvic injury, he made a late return to the track in 2016, but still managed to keep his winning streak going by scoring in the Gr.3 Bengough Stakes in preparation for the Gr.1 Champions Sprint at Ascot.

He currently stands his first season at Haras de Bouquetot, France and is being strongly supported by many top breeders in the UK, France and Ireland, as well as by his owner’s high-class broodmare band.

Khalifa Al Attiya, Al Shaqab Racing’s General Manager, said: “We are delighted that Al Shaqab’s Shalaa will be shuttling to Arrowfield Stud in Australia. After his tremendous racing career we have all the hopes he will become a top sire, and we’ve entrusted him with some of our own top quality mares including dual Arc winner Treve.”

Shalaa will stand at Arrowfield Stud at a service fee of A$33,000.

NEWHAVEN PARK TO STAND XTRAVAGANTNewhaven Park has announced that it is to stand Champion New Zealand Three-Year-Old Xtravagant (Pentire), the eight and a half-length winner of the Gr.1 New Zealand 2,000 Guineas, for the 2017 breeding season. The four-year-old also landed the seven-furlong Gr.1 Waikato Sprint by eight lengths.

Vinesgrove Stud welcomed a colt, born on Wednesday out of the Dansili mare Danza Nera, and Billy McEnery said, “We couldn’t be happier with our Anjaal colt. This is a young and exciting family, he is a half-brother to [Italian] Listed-placed Jalapeno.”

Anjaal’s fee for 2017 is €5,000.

DARLEY STALLIONS BECOME FIRST TIME FATHERSDarley has announced that the first foals by Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Outstrip (Exceed And Excel) and dual Gr.2 winner Sidestep (Exceed And Excel) have been born.

OUTSTRIPThe first reported foal for Outstrip, who is part of the 2016 Darley Club, is a grey filly, bred by Mark Johnston, and who was born at Fox Farm on Tuesday and is out of the Gr.3 Blue Wind Stakes runner-up Tiffany Diamond (Sadler’s Wells). Robin Sharp said: “I’m delighted with our grey filly out of winning and Group-placed mare Tiffany Diamond. She is of very good size, good bone and has a lot of quality.”

Outstrip, whose dam is the Gr.1 Spinster Stakes winner Asi Siempre (El Prado), was a high-class juvenile, who won at the first time of asking at Newmarket, who went on to land the Gr.2 Champagne Stakes and be placed in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes before his success at Santa Anita.

Based at Dalham Hall Stud, he stands for the 2017 breeding season at a fee of £5,000.

SIDESTEPHaras du Logis resident Sidestep, winner of the Gr.2 Pago Pago Stakes and Gr.2 Royal Soveriegn Stakes, as well as being runner-up in the Gr.1 Golden Slipper Stakes, is off the mark as a stallion, with the first reported foal being a filly, born at Ian Hanamy’s Elevage des Loges on 22nd January. She was described by her breeder as “an attractive, well-balanced, racy and correct filly.”

The filly is out of Ana Nova (Anabaa), a half-sister to the Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-third Ximb (Septieme Ciel) and the dams of the Gr.2 winner Pinson and Gr.3 Craven Stakes scorer and Classic-placed sire Native Khan.

Sidestep, who is a half-brother to the Gr.1 Champagne Stakes winner and sire Skilled (Commands) and his full-brother, the Gr.2 Theo Marks Sprint winner and sire Ambidexter, stands at a fee of €4,000 October 1st SLF.

“He was a breathtaking racehorse with phenomenal speed. His eight-length win as a two-year-old was incredible, then his record victories in the Guineas and the Waikato Sprint against older horses [beating five individual Gr.1 winners] were unbelievable. You don’t often see horses win by eight and nine lengths in Gr.1 company which he did,” said John Kelly.

“He is a superb looking individual with a truly international pedigree that is an outcross for Australia’s Danehill-line mares – we thought he was a wonderful opportunity that should not be missed. He will stand for a fee of A$15,000 [plus GST] which will offer Australian breeders great value given his credentials.

“He has all the attributes we look for in a stallion and we look forward to presenting him to Australian breeders this spring,” Kelly added.

Xtravagant is a full-brother to the Gr.3 winner, three-time Gr.1-placed and sire He’s Remarkable, out of the unraced Axiom (Zabeel), a daughter of the dual Gr.2 winner Arletty (Centaine). This is also the family of Gr.1 winners Guyno, Legs and Sixty Seconds.

RACING NEWSBRITAIN

UN DE SCEAUX LEADS CLARENCE HOUSE SEVENTomorrow’s Gr.1 Clarence House Chase, rerouted to Cheltenham following the abandonment of Ascot last weekend, has attracted seven final declarations.

Un De Sceaux (Denham Red), successful in the Gr.1 Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown Park on his latest outing in December, has an excellent record at Cheltenham, having won the 2015 Gr.1 Arkle Novices’ Chase and finished second to Sprinter Sacre in last year’s Gr.1 Queen Mother Champion Chase. He is aiming for his sixth top-flight success and his rivals include fellow Irish-trained Special Tiara (Kayf Tara), who finished a nose behind Un De Sceaux in the Queen Mother in March. He has won Gr.1 chases at Aintree and Sandown Park and landed the Gr.2 Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton Park on 27th December.

Dodging Bullets (Dubawi) won the 2015 Queen Mother Champion Chase, while Uxizandre (Fragrant Mix) will be making his first appearance since winning the Gr.1 Ryanair Chase at the same meeting. Top Gamble (Presenting) has won three Gr.2 chases, Royal Regatta (King’s Theatre) was a Gr.2 winner on his most recent outing in November and Eastlake (Beneficial) has won two chases on this course over an extended two miles, including last time out in December.

ENTRIES FOR NOVICE CHASES AT CHELTENHAM FESTIVALThe entries have been revealed for the three Gr.1 novice chases run at the Cheltenham Festival, the £175,000 Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase, the £175,000 RSA Novices’ Chase and the £150,000 Golden Miller Novices’ Chase.

The unbeaten chasers Altior (High Chaparral), trained by Nicky Henderson (who has trained five previous winners), and the Willie Mullins-trained Min (Walk In The Park) are on course for a mouth-watering clash in the Arkle, which has 33 entries. The pair met in the 2016 Gr.1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, with Altior running

NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEWIRELAND

SHANESHILL BOUNCES BACK IN GALMOY HURDLE VICTORYThe Gr.2 Galmoy Hurdle was the feature race of the day at Gowran Park yesterday and Shaneshill continued his preparation for Cheltenham along with the five other runners, who are also entered in the Gr.1 Stayers’ Hurdle at the Festival. Noel Meade’s Snow Falcon (Presenting) came closest to preventing a Willie Mullins winner, but the son of King’s Theatre stayed on well under pressure and Clondaw Warrior (Overbury) made it a 1-3 for Mullins. De Plotting Shed (Beneficial), who never looked like challenging, was two and three-quarter lengths back in fourth and Dedigout (Bob Back), who faded badly before the third last, was the only other to finish, as Milsean (Milan), Gigginstown’s second runner never made it past the third flight.

This was the first time Shaneshill was seen since falling at the final obstacle in the Gr.1 Christmas Hurdle. He made no mistake this time and claimed his third black-type success, having previously won the Gr.2 Leading Light and Ocovango Novices’ Hurdle and before that, the Gr.1 Irish Champion National Hunt Flat Race.

Bred by Declan Johnson and a €33,000 Goffs November Foal Sale purchase by Kevin Ross Bloodstock, he is a half-brother to the Gr.3 Doncaster Cup winner Far Cry (Pharly), the winner Dariyba (Kahyasi; dam of the Listed Ruby Stakes-placed Major Title), the winner Misskinta (Desert Sun; dam of the Gr.3 Winter

out a convincing seven-length winner over his rival. Mullins, who has won the last two renewals with Un De Sceaux and Douvan, also has last year’s Gr.1 Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle victor Yorkhill (Presenting), triple Gr.1 winner Bellshill (King’s Theatre; also an RSA Chase entry) and Listen Dear (Robin Des Champs), winner of her last six starts, among his eight entries. Identity Thief (Kayf Tara), a Gr.1 winner in 2015 and sixth in last year’s Gr.1 Champion Hurdle, is one of five entries for fellow Irish handler Henry de Bromhead and also holds a Golden Miller entry. Paul Nicholls has entered Le Prezien (Blue Bresil) and Politologue (Poliglote), both Gr.2 winners over fences this season, while Malcolm Jefferson is also doubly represented by Cloudy Dream (Cloudings) and recent Gr.2 victor Waiting Patiently (Flemensfirth).

The ante-post favourite Bellshill tops 55 entries, the highest level since 2010, for the RSA Novices’ Chase over three miles. A Gr.1 winner over hurdles last season, the seven-year-old made it two from two over fences with a smooth success in a Gr.2 contest at Limerick on Boxing Day. The 26 Irish-trained contenders for the RSA Chase also include last year’s Gr.1 Stayers’ Hurdle runner-up Alpha Des Obeaux (Saddler Maker), the 2014 Gr.1 Triumph Hurdle winner Tiger Roll (Authorized) and December’s Fairyhouse Gr.1 winner Coney Island (Flemensfirth), who also has an entry in the Golden Miller Novices’ Chase over two and a half miles. Other high-profile names in the RSA Chase include the recent Warwick scorer American (Malinas) and Nicky Henderson’s Might Bite (Scorpion), who fell at the last with the Gr.1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at his mercy.

The Willie Mullins-trained Yorkhill, as short as 6/4 with some bookmakers, headlines a record 66 entries for the Gr.1 Golden Miller Novices’ Chase. The seven-year-old, also an Arkle Chase entry, has won his two chase starts in good style and already boasts winning form at the Festival, having won a Gr.1 novice hurdle last season. There are a record 31 Irish-trained contenders for this race, with 11 hailing from the Mullins stable, whose entries also include the Arkle entry Min, the Gr.1-winning hurdler Bleu Et Rouge (Charming Groom), who did well to win on his chasing debut at Leopardstown over Christmas, the 2013 Gr.1 Champion Bumper victor Briar Hill (Shantou) and the lightly-raced American Tom (American Post). Nicky Henderson’s nine entries, the most of any British trainer, are headed by Buveur D’Air

INDUSTRY NEWSIRELAND

HRI LAUNCHES TRAINER MARKETING SUPPORT SCHEMEHorse Racing Ireland (HRI), through its recently formed ownership department, is introducing a Trainer Marketing Support Scheme to assist fully licenced trainers in recruiting new owners in 2017.

A grant of up to €1,000 per trainer, which will be paid on a pre-approval and reimbursement basis, is being made available for specified promotional purposes, such as covering the cost of an open day, creating a website or other social media initiatives, producing promotional material such as videos, flyers or adverts, and the upskilling of trainers and/or their staff in key marketing areas. Full details of the scheme and the qualifying activities will be posted to all fully licensed trainers this week. This initiative is a continuation of HRI’s continued drive to assist Irish trainers. A number of policies introduced by HRI in recent budgets have produced overall annual savings for trainers of €500,000.

Jason Morris, Director of Racing, said: “Last year saw a welcome increase in the number of new owner registrations, active owners and horses in training in Ireland, and it is hoped that the new Trainers Marketing Support Scheme will assist in maintaining this positive trend in 2017. It remains a challenging environment, with many trainers around the country struggling to attract owners, and, against this background, HRI is keen to help both by providing financial backing and by assisting trainers to promote themselves and the thrill of racehorse ownership to a wider audience.”

The Ownership Department of HRI is available to answer any queries on this new Scheme either by speaking to Aidan McGarry, Owner Relations Manager, or Caroline Townend, Owner Executive, on 045 455455 or by email on [email protected].

With recent structural changes to the South African horseracing and Sales landscape, Kenilworth Racing (the local racing operator managed by Phumelela) and Cape Thoroughbred Sales have re-engineered the racing and sales programme in the Western Cape with a strong focus on the international market who flock to Cape Town every year to take advantage of the beauty of Cape Town and the endless summer sunshine of the southernmost tip of Africa.

The Metropolitan, Cape Town’s most famous horserace now has a new sponsor in the form of Sun International, the hotel and gaming group, and boasts to be the richest race in Africa with total prize money of R5 million. The race itself has evolved from being a long handicap (last run in 1972) to the present day conditions with many in the industry calling for it to take the final step of becoming a WFA race.

The SunMet (off at 15:10 GMT) appears to be at the mercy of current Horse Of The Year and recent Queens Plate winner, Legal Eagle (Grey’s Inn). However, he was beaten by Smart Call a year ago and there is a slight question mark whether he now prefers the mile. If he does prove vulnerable over the extra two furlongs this brings a number of horses into the mix, including the vastly improved Whiskey Baron (Manhatten Island), Marinaresco

(Silvano), Captain America (Captain Al), Bela-Bela (Dynasty) and the only three-year-old in the field, Gold Standard, now part owned by Gaynor Rupert’s Drakenstein Stud which shares the Trippi colt with his original owner, Chrigor Stud. At the weights, perhaps last year’s third-placed horse, Captain America can turn the tables on Legal Eagle and give conditioner, Brett Crawford, his second Met victory after he won with Angus in 2003 for Sabine Plattner.

The other Gr.1 races include the Cape Flying Championship run over five furlongs, the Majorca Stakes for fillies and mares run over the mile and the Cape Derby run over ten furlongs.

In the sprint (13:00 GMT), the improving Trippi gelding, Trip To Heaven, looks hard to beat if coping with the drop down in distance after demolishing his field in the six-furlong Gr.2 Diadem Stakes, but the hugely impressive three-year-old Var colt from the Mike Azzie yard, Rivarine, could be anything. The beautifully bred Red Ray (Western Winter) and top-class mare, Carry On Alice (Captain Al) are also likely to be in the shake up.

The 16 runners in the Majorca Stakes (13:35 GMT) make for a wide open race. Worthy favourite, Silver Mountain (Silvano), has the widest barrier gate to overcome and she will require luck in running to get her nose in front. An intriguing runner is the top-rated Trippi mare, Real Princess, who has done most of her racing over the sprint trips. If seeing out the still mile, she has an undeniable chance from a good draw and being out of a daughter of Fort Wood, there is reason to believe that Lady Laidlaw and Dean Kannemeyer can add this most important race to her previous Gr.1 victory, the SA Fillies Sprint.

The Cape Derby (14:15 GMT) might be more clear cut if the hugely talented Dynasty colt, Horizon, brings his best to the races. A previous South African record yearling, Horizon’s dam is a full-sister to former Champion Sire, Silvano, making him a clear stallion prospect should he deliver in this prestigious Gr.1 event. The main challenger could be the imported High Chaparral gelding trained by Joey Ramsden who was runner up to Horizon in the Gr.3 Politician Stakes. Top rated, Table Bay (Redoute’s Choice), is a doubtful stayer according to a number of judges.

SALES NEWSA look back at the two-day Cape Premier Yearling Sale showpiece in Cape Town this past weekend showed that foreign buyers were to the fore, with their focus firmly on the progeny of the leading South African sires.

On the other hand, there was only modest interest in the ten Rock Of Gibraltar yearlings, while two of the four eagerly awaited progeny of Champion Frankel found themselves selling among the also-rans at around R1 million, a barrier broken by 40 other yearlings.

The South African record price for a yearling, set at this sale last year, was equalled when Tom Magnier bid R6 million for a colt by Champion Sire Trippi. Consigned by Drakenstein Stud, he’s the first foal of Gr.2-winning Dynasty mare Demanding Lady (rated AR 95) who has a US pedigree background. Kuda Holdings secured the second-highest priced colt at R5.75m. This one is by Dynasty, and the first foal of Gr.1-winning Jet Master mare Viva Maria (rated AR 102), consigned by Lammerskraal Stud.

Three yearling colts shared the bronze medal, each selling for R4.5m.

Lammerskraal Stud consigned a Dynasty half-brother to Gr.1 Cape Guineas winner Solo Traveller, secured on behalf of Coolmore Australia. Bernard Marais was the final bidder on a Captain Al colt consigned by Drakenstein Stud. He’s the second foal of multiple Gr.1-winning Jet Master mare Ebony Flyer (rated AR 108). The third of the trio is a first foal, by Captain Al out of Gr.3 winner Orator’s Daughter (rated AR 98), consigned by Klawervlei Stud. David Redvers signed the ticket, acting on behalf of Qatari Sheikh Fahad al Thani, whose first venture this is into South Africa.

BREEDING NEWSIf you want to breed a Derby winner, then you’d probably go to Highlands Farm Stud star stallion, Dynasty (Fort Wood). Horizon bids to give his sire his fourth winner in six years after Jackson (2012), Legislate (2014) and It’s My Turn (2016).

A winner of the race in 2003 in the fastest time recorded in 15 years, Dynasty went on to win the Durban July from draw 20 and was awarded the Equus Horse Of The Year and Champion Three-Year-Old Colt titles. He was retired to stud after his then owners, Fieldspring Racing, turned down a reported offer of R50 million to send him to Dubai.

His first crop made him the Equus Outstanding Sire of 2010 and he became the first Three-Year-Old Horse Of The Year to produce a Three-Year-Old Horse Of The Year from his first crop. The colt was Irish Flame, who won the SA Derby and Daily News 2000 and was runner up to Bold Silvano in the July.

LE HAVRE TO BE FIRST COVER FOR JET SETTINGIt has been reported that Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Jet Setting (Fast Company) has been retired from racing and will visit Haras de la Cauviniere-based Le Havre (Noverre) for her first covering as a broodmare.

Previously trained by Richard Hannon, the four-year-old was a 12,000 guineas purchase at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale in 2015. She went on to win the Gr.3 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes and the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas for new trainer Adrian Keatley, beating Minding (Galileo) by a head. Then sold at Goffs 2016 London Sale for £1,300,000 to China Horse Club, she went on to win the Gr.3 Concorde Stakes and will now visited Le Havre, who China Horse Club recently bought a share in.

She is out of the winning Johannesburg mare Mean Lae, from

the family of the Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes winner Miss Boniface (Tap On Wood).

FASIG-TIPTON

GULFSTREAM TWO-YEAR-OLD SALE CATALOGUE NOW AVAILABLEFasig-Tipton has announced that it has catalogued 162 entries for its Gulfstream sale of two-year-olds in training, which will be held on Wednesday, 1st March, getting underway at 4pm local time. The under tack show will be held for Monday, 27th February, starting at 10am.

“This sale has a lot of momentum coming off two highly successful renewals since moving to Gulfstream Park in 2015,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “This catalogue reflects that momentum, with increased numbers and outstanding quality.

“There is no better advertisement for a sale than selling the [Gr.1] Kentucky Derby winner [Nyquist],” continued Browning. “It’s a great testament to the quality of horses our consignors offer at Gulfstream, and to the success that buyers are finding from purchasing these horses off a proven dirt track. Prior to winning the Kentucky Derby, Nyquist won the Gr.1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream – 13 months after he had performed over the very same racetrack in our under tack show.”

The second dam is the Irish Listed-placed Blixen (Gone West), whose dam, Danish (Danehill), won the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes and is a full-sister to the Gr.3 Desmond Stakes winner and Gr.1-placed sire Ace and the sire Hawkeye, who also won the Desmond Stakes and was Gr.1-placed.
