All alumni, family and friends are warmly invited to join us for our annual Clare Gala Day 2019. This year we have a wide variety of fascinating talks, inspiring music, interactive workshops and tours around College and
beyond.
If you prefer a more relaxed schedule, you are most welcome to simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the College without taking part in any activities.

9.15-9.45: Tea, coffee and biscuits Join us in the Garden Room (Lerner Court) for a complimentary cup of tea or coffee. There’s no need to register when you arrive, just turn up and enjoy!
For guests with children aged 5 and under, there will be a selection of toys for younger children to enjoy in the Scholars’ Garden (or the Latimer Room in wet
weather) throughout the day.

person from the following four options) ‘From Silk to Milk, solutions to our changing climate’ with Harriet Lamb (Eric Lane
Visiting Fellow & CEO of Ashden) in the Elton Bowring Room The climate is changing fast and the time is tight to prevent irreversible damages.
The innovations and solutions are there - so what actions can we all take to ensure they are adopted?
Watercolour Workshop in the Fellows’ Garden
Spend a relaxing hour exploring your creativity and capturing the beauty of Clare's gardens in bloom. In this workshop, led by alumnus Claire Parker (BBC
One's 'The Big Painting Challenge' finalist), we will learn some plein air techniques in this expressive yet delicate medium. All materials provided, and no experience
necessary! Places are limited to 20 guests; suitable for those 12 years plus.
‘Advances in cancer research in Cambridge and beyond’ with Dr Jason Carroll (Fellow & Associate Lecturer in Pathology) in the Riley Auditorium
This talk will highlight some of the recent advances in cancer research in Cambridge both at the University and, increasingly, in partnership with the
corporate sector. Jay will explore the diversity of work being conducted and will discuss some of the future investments in the area of oncology research and the
development of new treatments.
Behind the scenes visit to the University Museum of Zoology with Dr William
Foster (Fellow & Emeritus Curator of Insects in the University Museum of Zoology) and Dr Edgar Turner (Fellow & Curator of Insects in the University
Museum of Zoology). Places are limited to 20 guests only. Suitable for children 8 and over and adults (all children MUST be accompanied by an adult). Guests will have a private tour,
followed by time to explore the galleries, with time to walk to and from the Museum (PLEASE NOTE: For this tour, guests will leave Clare at 10.30 and aim
to return by 12.30—please meet at Old Court Porter’s Lodge)

‘How to read a hexameter’ with Dr Charlie Weiss (Fellow, Praelector, Tutor and Director of Studies in Classics) in the Riley Auditorium
A brief guide to the king of Greco-Roman poetic forms: the hexameter. With no knowledge of the languages necessary, we can still learn the form of the meter and study its rules and traditions, stretching from Homer to Ovid. Suitable for those 12
years plus.

Join Professor Howard Griffiths, Professor of Plant Ecology for a tour of the Fellows’ Garden. Please meet in Old Court at 12.00pm. Not suitable for wheelchair users; for
up to 30 guests.
‘Inflammation attacks neurons in Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias’ with Dr Jack Brelstaff (Alzheimer’s Research UK Junior Fellow & Clare College Research
Associate Fellow) in the Elton Bowring Room Inflammation is a common feature of dementias like Alzheimer’s disease,
Parkinson’s disease, and the rarer Frontotemporal dementia. Until recently it was unclear if it was a bystander or pivotal to disease progression. New evidence links
brain immune cells to neuron death by nibbling away at them, or eating them whole.
Science Horizons Planetarium—Fascinating Real Science Experiences in The Garden Room, Gillespie Centre
The planetarium is a special 6m dome in which we can explore the Universe. The planetarium show will take you from the fascinating planets of our Solar System out
to the further reaches of the Universe, showing what you can see from your back garden. Find out what stars are, and how to see the patterns in the sky, and find
out lots about the science and history of the night sky. For ages 5 years and older.
13.00-14.00: Buffet Lunch / Picnic
Enjoy a two course buffet lunch for £25 per adult, £10 for children aged 10-17 and £5 for children aged 3-9 (under 3s are free). Wine and
beer will be available to purchase on the day.
If you prefer, feel free to bring your own picnic to enjoy in the beautiful Fellows’ Garden.
From 14.00, there will a drop-in session with professional storyteller Marion Leeper
telling enchanting summer stories for a family audience under the gazebo in the Scholars’ Garden.
14.15-15.15: Session three activities (choose one activity per person from the following six options)

Musical recital by Leo Popplewell in Chapel Leo was a Clare undergraduate from 2014 - 2017, holding both choral and instrumental scholarships. He is currently studying at the Guildhall School of
Music and Drama, recently giving solo performances in the Barbican Hall, Milton Court Concert Hall and Wigmore Hall, among others. In 2017, he formed the
Mithras Trio, winning first prize in the St. James Chamber Music Competition and second prize at the Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition, and becoming young artists for the Kirckman Concert Society for the 2019/20 season. Today’s recital
explores the inescapable influence of J.S Bach on the solo suite of the Twentieth Century. (Elliott Carter ‘Figment’ (6’), J.S Bach Suite no.6 in D Major, BWV 1012

Join Lee Corke, Clare’s award winning Catering Manager, in Hall to taste a selection of fine wines with detailed tasting notes. Places are limited to 25 guests;

Guided Tour of the Discovery: 200 years of the Cambridge Philosophical Society Exhibition, University Library
Join Professor Jim Woodhouse, Emeritus Professor of Structural Dynamics and Fellow of Clare College, for a guided tour of an exhibition celebrating 200 years of the Cambridge Philosophical Society. Founded in 1819, the Philosophical Society is Cambridge’s oldest science society: over the last 200 years it has played a key role in turning Cambridge into the major scientific centre that we see today. This
exhibition tells a story stretching from Newton, via Darwin, through 20th-century
developments in astronomy and molecular biology, right up to the present day. There will be two tours lasting half an hour each (one at 14.15 and one at 14.45). You would be most welcome to continue in the exhibition after the tour.
The exhibition takes place in the University Library, and participants should meet in the entrance hall of the library: through the revolving door and on the right.
Science Horizons Planetarium—Fascinating Real Science Experiences in The

16.30: Gala Day ends
Throughout the day:
Ice creams will be served at the Scholar’s Garden entrance from 1.30pm, for only £1.50
Plants hand selected by the College gardeners, books written by our Fellows/alumni and Clare merchandise (including College port) will be on sale in Old Court all day. Look out for
the stall!
Photographs will be taken at the event by a professional photographer. These informal shots may be used in College publications or online. If you would like a group shot of you and your friends please feel free to ask the photographer. If you would prefer NOT to be
photographed please inform a member of staff.
Children must be supervised by their parents or guardians at all times.
