What is the GAA?Few topics so stir the Irish spirit, few pursuits so excite

and define the Irish race as our native games, the traditional sports of hurling, handball and most

particularly, gaelic football. The organization which promotes and administers Ireland’s beloved sports is the

GAA, or Gaelic Athletic Association.

Headquartered in Dublin’s Croke Park, this dynamic organization has evolved, since it’s origins in the 1880’s,

into as powerful a symbol of the Irish essence as our music or our martyrs. Founded in Thurles, Co.

Tipperary, its mission also focuses on the native Irish language, Gaelic, and Irish culture in general. Historical

context has much to do with the national sports obsession ; in the 1880’s, pre-independent Ireland was resisting centuries of British dominion, and fighting to defend and nurture our national games was a crucial

part of forging our national identity. Thus, the GAA was born out of a hunger for self-determination; above and beyond mere sporting entertainment, it embodied our

Irishness.

Over time – and to this day – the sports became our lifeblood, the GAA, as the source, our lifeline. In the 125-plus years since its founding, the GAA’s history has been intertwined with that of our fledgling nation, marked by

political turmoil and a host of obstacles and triumphs, large and small. The back stories detailed on www.gaa.ie make for fascinating reading, outlining the organization’s timeline, profiles of its founders and key leaders, and so

on. Persevering and growing, this much-revered body in 2013 boasts 2,300 participating clubs in Ireland and,

increasingly, abroad. The official home of the GAA, Dublin’s iconic Croke Park, was extensively remodelled

between 1993 and 2003, and seats 82,300, making it the fourth largest stadium in Europe.

The sports are still our pride and passion, the parent body firmly rooted in our national psyche. We still relish every drop of drama and controversy afforded by post-mortems of our beloved games; fair to say that only the climate rivals GAA pursuits as a favorite topic of conversation.
