STEMME S10-VT - Very Unique!If one aircraft should be called unique, it is the StemmeS10-VT. This twin-seater combines two complete aircraft inone airframe - a fully powered aircraft and a high-end soaring glider. Seating side-by-side the crew enjoys both, a perfect field of vision from the cockpit and easy work-share during long distance flights. Accommodationunder the large one-piece canopy is very comfortable. The seats and dual controls could be easily adapted to theindividual size of the pilots. Noise level under full power is comparatively low and non existant in glider-mode.

Unique Stemme design features

The characteristic feature of all Stemme aircraft is the engine position in the center of the fuselage underneath the wings.Concentrating the largest mass in the centerof gravity makes the aircraft more stable,reduces the cockpit noise significantly andenables an aerodynamic clean nose-design.Power from the four-stroke turbo-chargedRotax engine is delivered via a carbon long-shaft to the nose mounted propeller. This special pitch-able prop is the secondunique Stemme feature. During soaring flightit lays folded hidden inside the movable nose-cone. Pushing a handle moves thenose-cone forward, thus releasing the twopropeller-blades. Starting the engine by turning the key, the centrifugal force unfoldsthe prop. The whole process does not takemore than five seconds from decision to fullpower. No moving mass, no shifting in aerodynamics - no trim change needed. The transition back from powered flight tosoaring mode is again easy.

Remarkable flight specifications

Being designed also as a soaring aircraft, the Stemme S10-VT offers in powered flightan extreme clean aerodynamic layout. The very slim fuselage lines enable a high

cruising speed of up to 140 kts (248 km/h)and a range of up to 929 nm (1720 km) underpower. With its wings spanning over 75 feet(23 m) the S10-VT has a service ceiling of30,000 feet (9140 m) clearly exceeded duringsome research flights. Flown as a glider thesewings enable a fantastic lift to drag ratio of1:50. This gives power-flight minded pilots orflight-schools a comfortable large safety margin for reaching a safe landing site evenwith a cut off engine. More glider mindedpilots love to take off with their Stemme S10-VT under power without help from others and proceed to the wanted soaringarea even for a large distance. Enjoying the excellent glider characteristics of their aircraft and returning to the home-base whenever wanted.

The Stemme S10-VT is known as an agile aircraft, with flaperons over the full span andairbrakes in the wings it can use a broadrange of flight regimes.

The airframe is a carbon-fiber constructionwith a steel framework as its center fuselagemodule. This framework carries the engineand all loads from the cockpit- and tailboom-module, from the main gear and from thewings. The main gear is operated electricallyand extends under its own weight, the tail-wheel is steerable, the whole aircraft isvery easy to maneuver on the ground.

All over the world

With his S10 aircraft, the designer Dr. Stemme also created a collectors piecefor design enthusiasts. It flies as good as itlooks. It is often called "the flying beauty". So a remarkably exclusive group of pilots all over the world own a S10. From Finland'ssnow to the deserts of Saudi-Arabia, fromSingapore to South-America and of course to the United States, Stemme pilots are proud of their unique aircraft. Many of them are professional pilots and appreciate the special characteristics of this sports aircraft for relaxing and touring.

Today everybody is talking about "green flying", the S10-VT has been an early advocate of "green flying" from the beginning.With the engine encapsulated inside the fuselage, it emits less noise than a comparable powered aircraft. Through excellent aerodynamics it consumes less fuel andusing the S10-VT as a glider for some legs of a flight this reduces the fuel consumption even more. Being very robustthe carbon airframe has an extreme long lifeexpectancy, the owners admire these facts.

Also a research aircraftFor the quality characteristics noted abovethe S10-VT is not only flown by private pilotsbut is also a workhorse for some researchinstitutes and scientists. The aircraft is usedfor aerodynamic researches and environmentalsurveillance for example.

The scientists/pilots of the "Mountain WaveProject" have flown a glider world record withtheir S10 over the Andes in South America.During his 14 hour flight Klaus Ohlmann hascovered a distance of 1,331 nm (2463 km) inpure glider modus without using his engine.

But the team is aiming for more. Their S10research aircraft is currently being prepared for an expedition that will fly high over theHimalaya mountains to explore the wavesbehind the highest mountains of our planet.

NEW AIRCRAFTSYNERGY designer hopes tohave prototype ready forOshkosh 2013

John McGinnis' grass-roots Synergy five-place efficient aircraft project has attracted critical attention as well as tens ofthousands of donated dollars, and now a flying prototype may be coming to AirVenture2013, but challenges remain. McGinnis said mid-December, that his successful kickstarter.com campaign had attracted about $95k, (£63k, €77k) to the project.

It was "a huge amount of money" that he inter-preted as "a mandate from the public," he said.But it was also a small step for a project thatMcGinnis hopes to ultimately guide to certification. McGinnis is currently optimistic that his current pace could deliver to AirVentureOshkosh 2013 a flying proof-of-concept prototype that will conclusively demonstrate the "stellar performance for this configuration." But there are many potential bottlenecks in the way.

"There's only about 4,000 things left that couldderail the project (before it gets to Oshkosh),"

McGinnis said, "but that's small relative to whatwe've been through." McGinnis says that if the

aircraft isn't complete by thetime Oshkosh comes around,"there really won't be muchpoint in going." So far, publicdisplays of the Synergy con-cept have generated publicinterest and support andMcGinnis is grateful for that.

However, catering to that interest, which arrives as phone calls, emails and comments on the project'sFacebook page, distractsMcGinnis from actual work on the aircraft. And he is

During December, Tecnam confirmed thatAero-Club Air France has placed an order for12 Tecnam P2008JC CS/VLA single engineaeroplanes.

In a significant milestone for Tecnam’s P2008aeroplane programme, the order by Aero-ClubAir France for 12 Tecnam P2008JC, builds on ahealthy order book of another 25 P2008JCCS/VLA versions of this cost effective and environmentally friendly aircraft.

Aero-Club Air France will receive their first 3 of 12 Tecnam P2008JC CS/VLA VFR night-equipped aircraft in the 1st quarter of 2013. Final TC from EASA is expected in May 2013.

The Helicopter RescueSummit is scheduled for March 4, 2013 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, 0800-1700 hrs.The summit provides a venue that allows variousoperators and vendors within the helicopter rescue industry to meet and discuss all aspects ofhelicopter rescue operations. Guy Reynolds is extraordinary man who has beenparticipating in writing the history of light sportaviation in the USA. He started flying in the early‘40s, got his licence in 1945 and in 2005 boughtthe Evektor SportStar.

He decided for the SportStar for its outstandinghandling qualities, spacious cockpit and lowoperation costs. His SportStar, s/n 2004-0304,registration N322PG was among the first two aircraft approved by the FAA. Together withEvektor SportStar N400EV licensed the same dayApril 8, 2005 he shares the distinction of owningthe fery irst S-LSA aircraft in the world licensed by the FAA in the US LSA category.

At the time Guy purchased his SportStar he was93 years old. Since then he has flown his aircraftapproximately 100 hrs a year and at his 100thbirthday he is at 800 hours. Guy holds primacyalso in the first S-LSA end-user delivery. And today he is the oldest living Sport Pilot stillflying his own aircraft!

A British team has flown out to Burma in anattempt to recover a hoard of "lost" WW2Spitfire ‘planes. By the second half ofJanuary, aviation archaeologists will startwork to unearth what they confidently predictwill be 36 new-in-box Supermarine Spitfires.

Lincolnshire farmer and aviation enthusiast, DavidCundall has spent over 15 years trying to pinpointtheir location and then organise everything neededfor a careful archaeological dig. The ‘planes, flownout to the Far East to support the Burma campaigntowards the end of the war, had never flown inanger. The Spitfires were subsequently buried incrates in the jungle in Burma, now Myanmar.Cundall worked during the 15-years to locate thecache, and earlier in 2012 secured the rights to digup the aircraft, which are believed to be locatedadjacent to Rangoon International Airport.

He said: "We have eyewitnesses who actually sawthem being buried. The war was over so somebodygave the order to dig a big hole and bury them." Mr Cundall said the ‘planes were buried "at a depthof about 30 feet, (10m)" and so would not be corroded by oxygen. Recently he has inserted acamera through a small hole bored into the sitewhich revealed “an object that resembles a Spitfire”.He added that the crates had been sealed with tarand supported by teak timbers. British troops alsoplaced a protective covering over the crates to helpprevent water seepage.

"I'm totally convinced that they will be restorable. We want to restore them to flying condition so wecan see them flying at air shows in three yearstime." On a visit to the country last year UK PrimeMinister David Cameron signed an agreement withBurmese authorities to co-operate on the project.Project Archaeologist Andy Brockman said: "This a rigorous, evidence-driven archaeologicalprocess - we are solving the mystery of what hap-pened. It is a fascinating mystery."

The effect of 36 Spitfires coming onto the marketduring the next few years will be interesting to see.The team will make an announcement about theirfindings later in January.

Windmill Aviation, famous for their resurrection to flight, of many unusual typeshave recently restored and flown a NordNC856 Norvigie which is believed to be 1 ofonly 3 flying throughout the World.

This example, of 112, was built in 1954 and wasused by the Armee de L'Air as a liaison and medivac aircraft. Windmill Aviation's chief engineerperformed the post rebuild flight comparing its per-formance to that of a Lysander and Fieseler Storch.

The Royal Netherlands Navy has retired the last of its Westland Lynx helicopters after 36 years of service. The oldest example, was painted in a special “retirement livery” for its final few flights. At least two machines have been confirmed for preservation.

In the early hours of December 7th, 1941, therewere eight civilian aircraft flying in the vicinityof Pearl Harbour, as the Japanese commencedtheir attack. Several of these aircraft never returned.

On Tuesday, 20 November, Vintage AeroplaneEurope ApS took delivery of its latest antique aircraft of historical significance, a 1933 Waco UICthat was one of the very few civilian aircraft flyingduring the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour,Territory of Hawaii, in December of 1941. Further, it is likely to be the world’s only civilianPearl Harbour Veteran that remains in airworthycondition today. The Waco was not shot downduring its flight, but managed to evade and landsuccessfully at nearby John Rogers Airport (present day Honolulu International). However, at0755, Bob was still next to his aircraft when thefield was strafed by the Japanese and he waskilled. Robert Tyce is generally regarded as thefirst American civilian killed during the attack.

On December 8th, the US War Departmentgrounded all civilian aircraft in the HawaiianIslands and on the west coast of California. The final entry in the Waco logbook for KT FlyingService indicate that the aircraft was dismantledon that date after flying a total of 9.35 hours in the first seven days of December 1941.

Recently restored, the Waco UIC is presently inairworthy condition near Malmo, Sweden. VAE is completing the cabin interior restoration at this time. When complete, the aircraft will beoffered at a forthcoming Bonhams Auction ofHistorical Aircraft.

CenTex Aerospace ReceivesSTC for King Air 200 GrossWeight Increase

CenTex King-Air-B200 Test-Aircraft first fitted with Halo-250.

The long awaited Halo 250 STC conversionfor King Air 200s is now in hand. Concludinga three year certification effort, the FAAissued the STC to CenTex Aerospace onOctober 16th. The Halo 250 STC conversionraises the maximum takeoff weight of any 200series King Air from 12,500 to 13,420 pounds,resulting in a 920 pound increase in payloadcapacity. It also moves the King Air 200 intocommuter category, allowing transport ofpassengers and cargo without the limitationsthat accompany restricted category.

Included in the Halo 250 conversion are six newsafety systems that provide improved stall

warning in icing conditions, aural over-speedwarning, elevator out-of-trim warning, engine fire extinguisher capability, emergency cabin lighting, and illuminated escape path floor markings. New Airplane Flight Manual performance data is available for planning thetakeoff flight path to 1,500 feet AGL and thelanding approach flight path in normal and icingconditions. These systems and data helpimprove the level of operational safety for Halo 250 converted airplanes.

The Halo 250 conversion is compatible withProline 21 and G1000 avionics and many of thepopular King Air 200 modifications, includingthose offered by Raisbeck Engineering, BLR,Blackhawk, and others. A BE-200 type rating is required to operate converted airplanes in commuter category. Simulator based flight training is available at FlyRight Incorporated(www.flyrightinc.com) using their FAA-approved,full motion simulator. Aircraft based flight trainingis also available. Orders are currently beingtaken and conversions scheduled for completionat the CenTex Aerospace facility in Waco, Texas.

The European Business Aviation Association(EBAA) commends the European CommissionVice-President Siim Kallas and MEP BrianSimpson for having voiced so forcefully theirfrustration over the lack of decisive actiontaken by Member States and for havingunequivocally condemned them for failing tomake the changes needed to deliver the benefits of the Single European Sky (SES) initiative yesterday at the EU PresidencyCyprus Summit.

The Commission’s sentiments are completelyaligned with EBAA’s recent calls to national stakeholders to no longer delay in taking action torealise the promises of SES. “It seems unlikely atpresent that objectives will be met due to the lackof mobilisation among Member States. There can be no arguing that air traffic control drastically needs modernising in order to createcost-efficient capacity for future growth and helpreduce both fuel burns and emissions. On this lastpoint alone, SES could have a real impact on curbing CO2 emissions, far greater than anythingthe EU ETS hopes to deliver. As such, foot dragging by some Member States seriously jeopardises Europe’s reputation as a leader in tackling environmental issues and reducing carbonemissions,” says Fabio Gamba, CEO of EBAA.

NEW ORDERSBELL’s Five Turkish 429’s

Bell hasannounced thatit has signed anagreement withthe Republic ofTurkeyUndersecretariatfor DefenceIndustries forthe supply of five Bell 429 aircraft. The Bell429s will be operated by the Turkish GeneralDirectorate of Forestry (TGDF) to protect forest resources and coordinate firefightingoperations.

“The decision to purchase Bell 429s for our mission was driven by the requirement for a fast,reliable and technologically-advanced helicopter.These aircraft will be performing challengingtasks, including firefighting operations, indemanding environments; the enhanced safetymargins and exceptional speed of the 429 arecritical advantages for the TGDF operations,”said Murad Bayar, the Undersecretary of Defence Industries for Turkey.

The TGDF will utilize the Bell 429s to survey andsafeguard their woodland resources, comprising

27% of the surface area inTurkey. Upon delivery in early2014, the new Bell 429s willreplace TGDF’s existing fleetof helicopters.

Bell assigned new rotor hub patentBell Helicopter Textron, Fort Worth, Texas, hasbeen assigned a patent (8,336,815) developedby Richard Rauber, Arlington, Texas, Frank B.Stamps, Colleyville, Texas, and James LeeBraswell Jr., Colleyville, Texas, for a "constant-velocity drive system for gimbaled rotor hubs."

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A constant-velocity drive system for a rotary-wing aircraft rotor comprising a differentialtorque-splitting mechanism and a gimbal mechanism is disclosed. A rotary-wing aircrafthaving a rotary-wing aircraft rotor comprising adifferential torque-splitting mechanism and agimbal mechanism is disclosed."

The patent application was filed on May 19,2006 (12/301,191).

AgustaWestland Signs £260M SeaKing Integrated Operational SupportContractAgustaWestland, a Finmeccanicacompany, ispleased toannounce that it has signed a contract with theUnited KingdomMinistry of Defence,valued at approximately£260 million, for theprovision of Sea King Integrated OperationalSupport (SKIOS) from 1st April 2013 to thetype’s out of service date in March 2016. Thiscontract will follow on from Phase 1 and Phase 2of SKIOS which provide services up to the endof March 2013.

The SKIOS contract provides a comprehensiveavailability based support package for the UKMoD's fleet of Sea King helicopters operated by the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The contract includes payments for achieved flying hours and incentive arrangements associated with delivering agreed levels of aircraft serviceability and operational fleet aircraft numbers.

AIRBORNE SURVEILLANCECamcopter integrates withRiegl’s VQ-820-GU airbornesurvey system

Schiebel and RieglLaser MeasurementSystems GmbH haveannounced the successful integra-tion of the SchiebelCAMCOPTER® S-100 Unmanned AirSystem (UAS)together with the Riegl VQ®-820-GUHydrographic Airborne Sensor. This successful integration marked the first timethat this new airborne sensor was flown onboard a UAV.

The S-100 helicopter UAS carried a specialSchiebel-made composite pod containing thesensor, the IMU-GNSS unit, the data recordingand transfer unit as well as a digital camera, during the flight tests in Grossmittel, Austria,which were carried out this month. This fully integrated system thus enables acquisi-tion of high-accuracy hydrographic and topo-graphic data, even in critical operational areas.

The Riegl VQ®-820-GU is specifically designedto survey sea beds, the grounds of rivers orlakes and is well suited for combined land andhydrographic airborne survey. Fields of application include mapping of coastal lines,lakesides and river banks as well as mapping ofarchaeology and cultural heritage.

These fields of applications require repetitivesurveying of inshore waters and are usually carried out by manned helicopters. The advantage of using the unmanned CAMCOPTER® S-100 UAS over manned helicopters are that the system is uniquely capable of penetrating areas that may be toodangerous for piloted aircraft or ground patrols.

AIR AMBULANCEUK – New Helipad atAddenbrooke’s Hospital NHS East of England Trauma Networkannounced in December that a temporary heli-pad will be laid at Addenbrooke’s Hospital as thenext step in enhancing care for the most seriously injured people across the region.

This solution has been made possible by close partnership working between the hospital, ambulance service, air ambulance trusts and theland owners, Pembertons. The temporary helipadwill be laid as close as possible to the EmergencyDepartment (ED), but will still require patients to betransferred from the helicopter to ED by land ambulance. It comprises a matting system laid onthe ground. The laying of the temporary helipad follows the introduction of the Network, which linksall hospitals together to improve the way in whichseriously injured people are cared for and includesmaking Addenbrooke’s Hospital the Major TraumaCentre for the region.
