The new factors were determined predominantly from monthly data for the years 1964; 1965 and 1966 reported for the nev Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) s e r i e s . The previous factors had "been based almost entirely on data from the older city center series. The adjustment procedure is described in detail in an article in the March 1965 Federal Reserve Bulletin. Hev data for eight additional SMSA's are now included in the list of reporting Areas and in the summary figures below. The leading centers seriesj lew York City and 6 others, were not affected. The added Areas are marked (*) for this publication. Revised monthly data for 1964, 196$ and 1966 reflecting the revised factors and including new centers will be published in the format of the annual debits releases (C*5). Lrglnnlng with data for January 1967 a new monthly series has been innaugurated. The new release shows seasonally adjusted Dank debits, derositz, sad deposit turnover for the same 233 SMSA's as are show in this release. Persons desiring a sample copy of the new release should *rlte^ to*the Publications Section, Division of Administrative Services, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Washington, D. C. 20551, and ask for the G. 11 release, "Debits, Demand Deposits, and Turnover." Bank debits to demand deposit accounts (except interbank and U. S. Government accounts) for the month of January of banks in 233 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas and other centers were $6,409.1 billion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate. This was higher than the previous month and 15.3 per cent higher than January 1966. Few York area banks repeated a slight increase from the preceding month and an Increase of 23.8 per cent over January a year ago. Month ago comparisons showed a 3.1 per cent decrease in the 6 Other Centers; 232 Centers showed l i t t l e change; end the 226 Centers increased 2.0 per cent. Compared to a year ago, debits at 6 Other Centers were up 9-6 per cent and at 226 Centers debits were up 9*1 per cent. Demand deposit turnover at banks in 233 reporting centers increased in January t o a new high of 57*2 with banks In New York City reporting the largest Increase. Turnover rates la 6 other leading centers declizAd to the lowest Kate since mid-1966, while increasing slightly in the 226 other reporting centers.
