Compatibility

The G3969A transfer line interface accessory is used to connect an Agilent 7697A Headspace Sampler (HS) to an Agilent Intuvo 9000 GC through an installed split/splitless (S/SL) or multimode inlet (MMI).

The G3969A transfer line interface accessory cannot be used with a G4514A sample tray on the Agilent Intuvo 9000 GC.

For information about changing the inlet liner or changing the Intuvo guard chip, see “Changing the Inlet Liner and Intuvo Guard Chip" on page 17.

Installation Procedure

Installation Instructio

This procedure explains how to install the transfer line interface accessory on the Agilent 9000 Gas Chromatograph (GC).

Read the Agilent Intuvo 9000 Gas Chromatograph Safety Manual before using the GC. The Safety Manual describes precautions to follow when installing and using the GC, as well as important regulatory information.

Before proceeding, turn off the column heater and other heated zones, and

WARNINGlet them cool down. When they have cooled, turn off any inlet gases at their supply, then power down the GC as directed, and unplug the power cord.

WARNING If an MS is installed on the GC, it must be cooled and vented prior to installation of the inlet. Refer to the Operation Manual for the MS for cooldown and venting procedures.

WARNING If an MMI inlet is installed on the GC, high pressure or extremely cold gas may be present. Before replacing a cryo valve or connected inlet, run the GC maintenance method, and turn off the cryo line at the source.

Always allow time for the column heater and other heated zones to cool

CAUTIONbefore turning off the gas supplies. Failure to allow cooling may damage the flow path.

CAUTION Ensure you are properly grounded with an ESD wrist strap before continuing.

Remove GC top cover and inlet components

6

1 If an MS is installed, cooldown and vent the MS. Refer to the Agilent 5977B Series MSD Operating Manual for details.

2 On the touch screen, navigate to Maintenance > Instrument > Perform Maintenance > Maintenance Mode > Start Maintenance.

3 When the GC becomes ready, turn it off as follows:

a On the touch screen, navigate to Settings > Power. The Power Options dialog box appears.

b Press Shut Down. The GC shuts down.

c Switch off the power on/off switch on the rear panel.

4 Remove the GC power cord from the wall outlet.

5 Turn off all connected gases at the source.

6 If present, remove the injector from the GC.

7 Put on an ESD wrist strap, and attach the ground to the GC sheet metal frame for electrostatic protection.

8 Using a T20 Torx driver, completely loosen the five captive screws securing the top cover to the GC, and lift the cover off of the GC. See Figure 4.

9 Remove the detector cover components from the GC top cover for use on the top cover supplied with the accessory. Typically, this requires removal of the flat portion of the cover by using a T-20 Torx driver to remove four screws.

10 Store the GC top cover, including the inlet cover, in a safe, dry location for future use.

11 Use a T-10 Torx driver to completely loosen the two captive screws securing the EPC bracket to the GC, and remove the bracket. See Figure 5.

12 Use a T-10 Torx driver to completely loosen the captive screw securing the EPC module weldment to the EPC module. See Figure 6.

Installation Instructio

Avoid sharp bends when handling the septum purge tubing assembly.

CAUTIONFailure to do so may result in damage to the hardware.

1 The accessory is shipped configured for installation on an S/SL inlet. If the accessory is being installed on an MMI inlet, do the following:

a Use a T-20 Torx driver to remove the three screws securing the two spacer blocks to the accessory. See Figure 9.

b Flip the spacer blocks over, and reinstall them by securing with the three screws. See Figure 10.

4 Rotate the yellow turn top handle on the turn top insert assembly to lock it in place.

5 Insert the accessory heater cable into the connector on the inlet interface PCA. The connector is keyed to prevent improper insertion.

6 Use a T-10 Torx driver to tighten the captive screw securing the EPC module weldment to EPC module. See Figure 6 on page 7.

7 Route the carrier gas line out of the rear of the GC. See Figure 11 on page 10.

8 Ensure that the vent tubing within the GC is properly oriented. The looped portion of tubing should reside near the split vent trap.

9 Install the EPC bracket to the GC and use a T-10 Torx driver to secure it with two captive screws. See Figure 5 on page 7.

10 Place a Swagelok fitting on the end of the carrier gas line, and connect it to the Carrier fitting on the back of the Agilent 7697A Headspace Sampler. See Figure 14.

Prepare the transfer line

Installation Instructio

Materials are provided in the ship kit to make connections to 0.53-mm id columns and tubing. If you are using a different transfer line, use the appropriate ferrules (see Table 2). Ensure the flexible metal ferrule dimension matches the transfer line. Cut fused silica, and install the flexible metal ferrules and the transfer line.

Before performing this procedure, ensure the transfer line is installed in the 6-port valve. Refer to the procedure “To Install a Fused Silica Column into the Transfer Line” in the Agilent 7697A Headspace Sampler Maintenance Manual.

To prepare the GC interface end of the transfer line:

1 Pass the transfer line fused silica tubing through the XLSI transfer line nut, flexible metal ferrule, and ferrule pre-swage tool. See Figure 15.

2 With the XLSI transfer line nut tight against the transfer line, hold the nut with a 1/4-inch wrench, and thread the ferrule pre-swage tool onto the nut.

Agilent G3969A Transfer Line Interface for an Agilent 7697A HS Accessory

The flexible metal ferrules are delicate. They must not be overtightened.

CAUTIONFailure to carefully follow the instructions in the following steps may cause the fused silica tubing to break.

3 Using the 1/4-inch wrench and ferrule pre-swage tool, tighten the nut a little at a time, occasionally checking to see if the ferrule is gripping the tube.

4 When the ferrule just starts to grip, notice the position of the nut and then tighten by turning 45 to 60 degrees of rotation, but no more than 60 degrees (one flat). If you can pull the column free, it is not tight enough.

5 Remove the ferrule pre-swage tool.

6 Using a ceramic column cutter, trim the tubing at the small end of the ferrule, leaving approximately 0.3 mm of tubing extending beyond the ferrule.

The column tubing end cannot extend beyond 0.5 mm from the end of the

NOTEferrule.

It is important that the ceramic column cutter has one side dedicated to only making contact with the column and the other side dedicated to riding on the edge of the flexible metal ferrule. This preserves the ceramic edge sharpness, which is necessary for making good column cuts. See Figure 16.

7 Check the end of the tube with a magnifier. The end of the tube need not be perfectly square, but should not have cracks extending under the ferrule.

Attach the transfer line to the accessory

Installation Instructio

1 Install the accessory GC top cover, without the accessory inlet cover installed, and secure it by using a T-20 Torx driver to tighten the five captive screws. See Figure 4 on page 6.

2 Unlatch and open the clamp on the transfer line interface accessory. See Figure 17.

3 Carefully place the transfer line end-cap into the clamp on the transfer line interface accessory. The end-cap should lie squarely against the bottom and back surface.

4 Partially latch the clamp, closing it enough to loosely secure the transfer line and end-cap. This provides strain relief, and aligns the end-cap to the heated block portion of the transfer line interface accessory.

5 Carefully thread the XLSI transfer line nut into the transfer line interface accessory fitting while keeping the transfer line end-cap aligned with the fitting.

6 Finger tighten the XLSI transfer line nut on the end of the transfer line, screwing it into the transfer line interface accessory fitting.

7 Completely latch the clamp.

8 Use a 1/4-inch wrench to tighten the XLSI transfer line nut by 1/2 a flat (30 degrees).
