Food Pantry
Guardian Angels Parish is fortunate to have a food pantry
to assist with the hungry in the Westport and Roanoke
neighborhoods. We do utilize Harvester’s for the bulk of
our food items in our pantry, but we rely on the generosity
of parishioners for both food and personal care items.
Current food needs: Corn flakes or cheerios, dry or
canned pasta, tomato sauce, canned corn, canned peas,
canned fruit (packed in water), canned chicken or tuna.
Adoration
Every Friday after a communion service at 9:00 am in the
Chapel, we have Adoration in the Chapel; this typically
runs from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm.

4|Guardian Angels Parish Kansas City, MO
From Sr. Linda Barringer Dear Parishioners,
I’m sure that many of you have experienced a disruption in plans for the future, which mean changes that weren’t expected. I want to share with you what is going on in my life that mean some changes for me and the parish.
For some time now my night vision has been a problem and there are other eye problems that my eye doctor is watching carefully. It is becoming very difficult for me to drive at night, and some of my ministry here means working after dark. I am also experiencing a decline in vision in my left eye which had a retinal detachment back in 1994. So, getting my license renewed this year could be problem.
I have been in dialog with my religious superiors about the future and with them have reached the decision that retirement is the best option for me and for a ministry here that necessitates driving a distance and late hours. I’m so sorry that this needs to happen but in all fairness to the parish, continuing to work would mean not be able to do what I have been doing in all areas of adult faith formation.
So, I have informed the staff and now sharing with you that
at the end of May I will be leaving the parish. My religious community has projects which they are wanting me to become involved in and hopefully I can take on some volunteer tasks, if I can continue driving.
Being at Guardian Angels for the past 18 years has been a privilege and an honor. This community is a special one, and in many ways witnesses to what it truly means to be a Catholic parish. We have been through some difficult years and many changes. I am sorry to be the source of another change, but circumstances sometimes can’t be changed, at least not medical ones.
I thank each and everyone of you for giving me the opportunity to be among you, learning much from you and sharing our faith journeys together. I ask for your continued prayers in the year ahead and I want to ask that those of you who have worked closely with me will continue to share your many gifts with the children and adults of this parish.
Sr. Linda
Beloved,
The mission Jesus gave the Church was a simple one: 1 -
Make disciples. 2 - Baptize.
Does that look backwards to you? Since baptism is the
entrance to the Church, shouldn’t we baptize first, and then
disciple? Well, obviously, discipling is a lifetime project. But,
I think Jesus has a point that if we do not understand the grace
imparted to us in baptism, we can miss out on its practical
benefits. So, we should have some discipling before baptism
in order to realize the real power that is imparted there at the
baptismal font.
When you were baptized, you were buried together with
Christ. Then, you were raised to life together with him by
believing in God's power that raised Jesus from the dead.
Colossians 2:12
First, our selfish self dies and is buried. That part of us that
desires to serve me instead of God, that wants to put me first
instead of others, that, given the option, would wallow in
laziness and gluttony instead of joy and service, is put to
death and buried.
Second, we are raised to a new life together in and with
Christ. There is unspeakable confidence and joy in the
knowledge that we are living every moment in Christ.
That confidence and joy are activated by our belief in God’s
power.
Baptism does not just make us members of the Church. It
makes us children of the God who created the universe and
permeates every atom within it as well as every cell of our
bodies. For in Him we live and move and have our being.
Acts 17:28
Today, we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord. On that day
when Jesus stepped into the waters of the Jordan River, all
righteousness was fulfilled. Everything about our relationship
with God changed. Once we understand and rest in the
fulness of our relationship with God as his children, we
cannot help but restart the cycle. We go out and make more
disciples who will be baptized into children of God, who then
go out and make more disciples themselves. That is our
mission. That is our promise. That is our confidence and joy.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Ed

EXTENDING THE WELCOME
Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph had a deep
impact on thousands of lives last year. We know, however, that for every person we assist there are an additional 20
who live in poverty within our 27-county region. Due to
their distance from our physical offices, many are left
unaided. Help “Extend the Welcome” in 2020 by
supporting Catholic Charities’ outreach efforts, which take our services to the neighborhoods and communities where
families most in need are living. For more information or to
help, please contact Nancy Butters, Development Manager
at 816-659-8266 or [email protected].
