    WHAT IS DEMON POSSESSION?

I will be presenting, What is demon possession?

There are several instances in the Bible where it speaks about demon possession,i.e. in Luke 8:28-30 and also Mark 5:8-11 where Jesus commanded the evil spirit

name Legion to come out of the man and he sent it into the herd pigs. Another

example, in Luke 22:3-4 where Satan entered Judas. Judas went to the temple

guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. Also, in Matthew 9: 32-

33 when they brought to Jesus a dumb man possessed with a devil.

I want to first start by defining 1) demon and 2) possession:

    1) Demons are described as evil spirits (Mark 3:13-15), unclean spirits

(Matt.10:1, Mark 1:27) and angels of Satan (Rev.12:9). Satan and his demons

deceive the world (2 Cor.4:4, Rev.12:9), attack Christians (2 Cor.12:7, I Peter5:8) and combat the holy angels (Rev.12:4-9). Demons are spiritual beings,

but they can appear in physical forms (2 Cor. 11:14-15, Phillippians 3:19).

The demons/fallen angels are enemies of God, but they are defeated

    enemies.

    2) Possession described as a verb means to hold fast, to procure for oneself,

acquire, obtain, and hence to possess. In other words meaning to take

ownership of. In I Thessalonians 4:4-5, it states, that every one of you should

know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; v.5 Not in the

lust of concupiscence.. meaning lust or strong desire.

So, how can we identify what demon possession is today? Well if demons are

described as evil spirits, unclean spirits, as deceiving the world, and attacking

Christians and possession is defined as taking ownership of. Then when we read in

Galatians 5: 19 21 it speaks of the works of the flesh. All the things spoken of in

these verses (adultery, fornication, idolatry, hatred, envyings, murders,

drunkenness, and revellings) are unclean spirits or evil spirits which Satan uses to

deceive us and hence eventually take ownership of our soul if we choose to stay

wrapped up in our hidden desires. (I Cor. 6:9 -10) The devil uses the works of the

flesh to separate us from God by possessing or taking ownership of the soul. It

further tells us in verses 22-25 to walk in the spirit and to crucify the flesh with the

    passions and lust.

Why is this important to someone who is not a member of the Church of Christ? It

helps them to understand that their soul can be possessed by Satan if they choose

to continue in sin and not be baptized in the church that Christ speaks about in the

    New Testament.

This topic is important to my classmates and me because our objective is to make

heaven our home. But, we must also understand Satans objective to steal, kill

and destroy. (John 10:10) To accomplish our objective we must .crucify our flesh

with the affections and lusts. (Galatians 5:24) So that the devil or demons will not

take possession of our soul. But if we choose to stay in sin and not acknowledge

Gods word then he will give us over to a reprobate (a mind void of judgment) mindto do things that are not convenient. (Romans 1:28 and Ephesians 5:4) So I say to

you my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ as it states in I Peter 5:8, to be sober,

be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about,

    seeking whom he may devour.
