Llanwrtyd Wells Community Transport

December was a busy month for LWCT. As well as entering the Christmas Tree Festival at St James’s Church, there were regular coffee mornings at the Heart of Wales Coffee Club and visitors and volunteers enjoyed a morning of music and singing with Mairead Matthews, Jacquie Brown and Annis Jones.

There was also a visit to the Wyeside to enjoy “A Celtic Christmas” with the award-winning band Calon and an afternoon tea at the Caer Beris with the Builth Male Voice Choir.

There will be further events and outings organised in the New Year, so look out for notices.

There was a Judicial Review in London (attended by Operations Manager Laura Burns) brought about by a challenge from the Bus and Coach Association that Community Transport Schemes are trading commercially because they tender for school transport contracts alongside coach firms. These contracts are an essential source of income as they subsidise other services such as “shoppa” buses and the Llanwrtyd Community Centre amongst other things.

Judgement has been deferred and we will have to wait until sometime next year for the Department of Transport to issue further guidance on existing legislation, but it seems that each case would have to be considered on an individual basis. The final decision could have much wider-reaching repercussions on charities and other not-for-profit organisations.

Don’t forget to look out for the monthly Community Transport Newsletter, which gives updates in more detail as well as featuring other articles of interest.

Happy New Year from everyone at Llanwrtyd Wells Community Transport!

Llanwrtyd Wells & District Twinning Association

The Twinning Association's Annual Dinner at the Neuadd Arms hotel on 17th January was attended by nearly 40 members. It was a very enjoyable evening filled with friendship, food and fun - a sumptuous 3-course meal complete with Christmas crackers, silly hats, toys and jokes. Following the meal, there were toasts to our friends in twin-towns Meriel and Cesky Krumlov, then a short speech from the Chairman, Bryn, who thanked everyone for all their hard work and support of the Twinning Association, in particular our Secretary, Liz. The staff of the Neuadd Arms were also thanked and applauded for the excellent dinner, much appreciated by all. Entertainment organised by Tony included some awful jokes and a 'best tie' competition, easily won by Lindsay with his ultra-shocking-pink tie that beautifully matched his brightly-coloured shirt. Members were also updated about a forthcoming Charity International Rugby Match, France (Meriel Coqauvins) v Wales (Llanwrtyd Bears) on the Dolwen Field on Friday 22nd February, kick-off at 1.30pm. In the evening, a Charity Night in the Victoria Hall at 7.30pm includes a hog-roast (vegetarian option), buffet, disco, bar and charity auction. Tickets @ £10 from David Price tel. 07557990741. Proceeds will be split between '2 Wish Upon a Star' and a French charity. The evening ended with more socialising over coffee and mince pies in the lounge. Everybody's welcome at the forthcoming meetings: Business meeting: Thursday February 6th at 8pm in the Institute. Social event: a Twmpath on Friday February 28th in the Victoria Hall at 7.30pm with local band, Di Enw, and caller, Ann Hill. Bring'n'share buffet, bring your own drinks, raffle. Tickets @ £5 available from local shops/on the door. Proceeds to the TA. AGM: Thursday March 5 at 8pm in the Institute with a review of last year's activities and finances, also elections/re-elections of officers for the coming year. For more information about the Twinning Association, email the Secretary, Liz: [email protected] or ring the Chairman, Bryn, on 01591 610633, new members welcome!

DOLWEN FIELD UPDATE

Just before Christmas, the Committee submitted an application to the National Lottery People & Places Fund for just over £300,000. As most of you will know, this was our second attempt, which contained far more detail and evidence of community support. Unfortunately, last week we were informed that we had been unsuccessful again. We are asking for a large sum of money, and although the feedback stated it was a good application, they felt there were more deserving projects. They again said that the project lacked community-led support, and therefore we need to come back to the community to ask how we should proceed with the project to take it further.

Our current ideas for the project as it stands, involves the following:

1. Putting in an access road from the Cefn Gorwydd Road to the Pavilion,

with parking for 20 cars.

2. Installing a running/walking/cycling track with outdoor fitness

equipment.

3. Creating a community Sensory Garden behind the Pavilion.

4. Installing a “Repair Shed” next to the Pavilion.

The Committee are totally determined to get activities happening on the Dolwen Field and in the Pavilion. We have already raised over £9000, with community support and involvement, and planning permission has been granted. We are delighted to see that the newly formed local rugby club – The Llanwrtyd Bears- are keen to use the field. They are due to play against a visiting French team on the Field shortly.

The potential for this project is huge, but we need your support! We need to know your views and hear your ideas.

We need your skills! We need you to be involved in any way you can – you don’t need to be part of the Committee!

The following people are your contacts for your feedback and ideas: Mr D Barlow – Chairman Mr M. Piggott – Secretary Mrs L Ball – Treasurer

Please let us know your feelings on the project. Should we ask for a lesser amount just to get the access road and car park? Should we completely rethink the whole idea? Your feedback is vital for this project to succeed. Thank you.

St. James’ Church, Llanwrtyd - Charity Sleepover 22-23 November 2019 On the night of 22-23 November we held a Charity Sleepover to raise funds for the Open Doors Charity and also people who suffer from Homelessness. 13 of us were concerned about persecution and intimidation in certain countries overseas and also were very aware of the increasing problem of Homelessness.

We don’t have to walk 5 miles to the nearest muddy waterhole and then struggle back home with a small quantity of infected water to provide for the day. We don’t live in fear of being taken to a forced Labour Camp just because we keep a Bible at home, to be then incarcerated for 10 years. Our young girls are safe at home, not captured by extremists to be then taken away for use as sex slaves or subservient captives. We don’t have to bed down for the night in a shop doorway, in a sodden sleeping bag or on a sheet of cardboard, in heavy rain or sub-zero temperatures, intimidated by passing revellers.

Our aim was therefore to raise funds to support our chosen Charities, in our small way, to help alleviate persecution and intimidation and to provide aid for those who have no home or shelter. Our overnight stay was not the same as sleeping out of doors regardless of the weather. We met up at 9.00 pm, had hot drinks, talked and sang hymns until we decided maybe it was time to bed down for the night. We managed pretty well, despite the cold and a few snorers! It felt really cold by 5.00 am when someone’s hot water bottle burst and she woke up to find herself wet through! Staring at the church ceiling unable to sleep, inevitably, thoughts turned to those who sleep outdoors with no comfort whatsoever.

Eventually, after restless reflection, our morning team of volunteer ladies arrived who then provided a welcome cooked breakfast. (Again, lucky us, in comparison). The lead up to Christmas seemed to be all about getting and spending and having a good time. For many people, in many places, the real hope of Christmas must have seemed very distant, especially for the lonely or the abandoned. We are the fortunate ones but we hope in our small way that we could help to support at least some individuals or families who are intimidated, persecuted, isolated or homeless. Our communities gave us amazing support via sponsorship and donations on our venture and so a big thank you to all who helped us raise funds for our target charities. In total we raised £2,779 and this was distributed as follows:

“Open Doors”: £1,279 “Shelter Cymru”, Swansea: £400 “Matthew’s House”, Swansea: £400

“Faith in Families”: Brecon & Swansea £350 “Swansea Night Shelter”: £350

Thank you once again for supporting us regarding this initiative. Carol Jones and Rob Thomas (Llanwrtyd) and Liz. Bramley (Llanhamlach).

Llanwrtyd Wells Community Transport and Events Recycling

We are a voluntary ‘not for profit’ organisation that became operational in 2002, the initial aim was to provide transport for all, because public transport is somewhat limited in this area.

To become self-funding, the company branched out and is now registered as a professional dealer/broker of controlled waste. It has been responsible for providing recycling at many events, not least The Royal Welsh Showground.

To bring in more revenue a glass imploder was purchased to make the recycled glass into sharp free cullet in sizes from 250 micron dust to 10mm, which has many uses including landscaping, shot blasting, and when mixed with concrete or resin, makes home and garden ornaments for sale.

The organisation provides the following services to the community and surrounding areas: Daily shoppa buses, volunteer drivers using their own vehicles to take people to medical appointments etc, monthly day trips, community garden, Tuesday and Thursday Coffee Clubs at the Community Centre based at Llanwrtyd Station. Rooms at the centre which can be hired out for meetings, seminars and family occasions.

We have previously started and supported a Nosh Night on the third Friday of each month at Cilmery Community Hall; this has now been handed over to the hall committee. This is an opportunity for local people to get together and enjoy a take away meal and enjoy each other’s company.

We also started and supported a weekly Cuppa Club at the same place in Cilmery which has now been handed over to the hall committee. This takes place each Monday from 10.30am until 1pm.

We are looking to start up a Bridge Club, or even a Games Evening in Llanwrtyd where local people can play a range of indoor games and enjoy light refreshments whilst making new friends.

Please have a look on our website for further details about the things we provide at www.llanwrtydcommunitytransport.org.uk. On there is a catalogue of garden furniture and novelty items we make and which are for sale. There is information about glass cullet and its uses, from simple things like using in the top of plant pots to suppress weeds and deter slugs, or in the bottom of reptile tanks, to making paving, driveways and landscaping which may be of interest to local builders too.

If you or anyone you know are planning an event, please let us quote for dealing with your recycling and waste. There is information on our website about how we can help by advising on food and drink waste, preparing event environmental policies, waste audits, collection and removal of waste and provide Recycling Wardens when required.

We also have Shiva, our Indian Goddess who stands 18 feet tall and weighs three quarters of a ton and is made completely of recycled scrap of various kinds. Shiva can be hired for an event to amaze your attendees, so please have a look at the photos on our website of Shiva at the Landed Festival, which LWCT also support, or look in the August edition of our Newsletter for further information and photographs.

Please remember that we can only supply these services with your help. Subsidising transport and the other things we provide to make then financially affordable for our members and financially viable for the organisation is not easy. We are not asking for donations, we are asking that you have a look at what we provide and consider getting involved or purchasing our services if you feel they will meet your needs. Every penny we raise goes back into the communities of Llanwrtyd Well and surrounding area so please help us to keep these services going.

If you feel you would like to offer some time voluntarily, or if you would like to speak to someone about any of our services or receive a no obligation quote, please make contact with us at [email protected] or on 01982 552727/551295. We hope you feel our cause is worthwhile and would like to get involved, we would love to have you on our team.

Happy New Year

We would like to express our thanks to everyone who contributed to making the New Year celebrations in the town this year such a great event, for locals and visitors alike. The Guardian newspaper listed Llanwrtyd Wells as 3rd in the UK of best places to go to celebrate New Year. So to all who contributed their old candle wax for making the burning torches, Graham & Carlie & friends who helped construct the torches, Dana & Craig for creating a spectacular ‘Mari’, Eifion who carried the Mari and Berni who led the walk, Rebecca for re-enacting the Mari Lwyd ritual, also Cheryl & Andy, Pete & Lindsey, Martin & Wendy for welcoming the walkers along the way, to Kathy and Paul for organising the drummers and piper, and to any and everyone else who contributed, a very big thank you, and let’s see if we can’t make it bigger and better next year.
