The AWS Radiographic Interpreter seminar andcertification assures employers and practitionersalike that the principles of radiographicinterpretation are reliably applied to theexamination of welds. If your job responsibilitiesinclude reading and interpretation of weldradiographs, this program is for you. You’ll learnproper film exposure, correct selection of imagequality indicators, characterization of indications, and use of acceptance criteria as expressed inthe AWS, API, and ASME codes.
Your certification as an AWS CertifiedRadiographic Interpreter demonstrates yourability to analyze radiographs of weldments, andthat you have met the requirements of AWSB5.15:2003, Specification for the Qualification ofRadiographic Interpreters.

Founded in 1919 to advance the science, technology and application of welding and alliedprocesses including joining, brazing, soldering, cutting and thermal spraying.
Just one week to become an AWS Certified Radiographic Interpreter.
The AWS CertifiedRadiographic Interpreter pro-gram certifies the ability of
individuals to properly assesswelding-related indicationsproduced on radiographic filmand related media. If yourjob responsibilities includereading and interpreting weld radi-ographs, this program isfor you.
The five-day AWSCertified RadiographicInterpreter (CRI) Seminaris designed to ensure thatindividuals have theknowledge to properlyassess indicationsproduced on radiographicmedia of weldments oradjacent base metal. Itwill prepare you for theCRI Certification exam, which is given at seminarlocations across thecountry.
Interpretingradiographs involves morethan staring into a light boxand making a “judgmentcall.” The radiographicinterpreter must determinewhether the radiograph has been
exposed properly, whether theimage quality indicators have been
correctly chosen in accordance withcode requirements, and which specific
acceptance criteria are applicable underthe governing code. Failure to do any of
these tasks can put your product, yourcompany’s reputation, or your job at risk.
The time and money spent on taking theseminar and upgrading your qualifications in this
area can pay your employer back many times over. You can be assured that the American Welding Society
will deliver a quality product, backed by leading experts in
Certified Welding Inspectors often find themselvesrequired to use their skills in the interpretation ofradiographs. The AWS Radiographic Interpreter programhelps them “expand their credentials in a related inspectionskill.” Inspection Trends, Summer 2003
Do You Qualify? In order to take the examination as a Certified
Radiographic Interpreter, you must meet the followingminimum requirements:• Visual Requirements• Visual Requirements .. Good near-vision is necessaryto perform the functions of the radiographic interpreter. Theinability to differentiate relatively small indications onradiographic film may result in allowing weldments oradjacent base metal with rejectable defects to be placedinto service. You must pass an eye examination, with orwithout corrective lenses, to prove near-vision acuity on Jaeger J2 letters at not less than 12inches in each eye. The eye exam must be administered byqualified personnel and must be performed not more thanseven months prior to the date of the successful completionof the exam or recertification. • Education Requirements.• Education Requirements. A valid high schooldiploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).• Training Requirements.• Training Requirements. A minimum of 40 hours oforganized training in radiographicinterpretation/examination (fulfilled by the AWS CRISeminar) related to the topics covered in the seminar.• Experience Requirements.• Experience Requirements. At least one yearexperience as a company-certified or nationally certifiedindividual in radiographic interpretation, or perfomingradiographic interpretation under the direct supervision ofsuch an individual, is required. In some cases, a maximumof six months of other NDE experience or education can besubstituted for radiographic interpretation experience.

the field of radiographic interpretation. Our training provides thenecessary knowledge. The certification provides your employer withproof that the training was effective.
You’ll learn:• Nature and properties of X- and gamma radiation• Photographic aspects• Fundamental aspects of radiographic quality• Radiation safety principles• X-ray and gamma ray equipment• Effects of equipment change on radiographic quality• Geometry of image formation• Exposure calculations• Application to welds• Viewing radiographs• Welding technology
Your CRI Seminar and Exam WeekDay 1 (Monday) through Day 5 (Friday): The seminar includes
instructor-led lectures and discussion on radiographic methods, image quality, and classification of indications with respect to therelevant codes. Each classroom session includes practical exercisesin radiographic quality and film interpretation. Day 6 (Saturday): CRI exams are held the day after the seminar,
right at the seminar location. Comprised of three parts:
Part A - General (40 multiple choice questions) andPart C - Specific (78 multiple choice questions) - 3 hoursPart B - Practical (40 multiple choice questions reading film) - 3hours
Over $200 Worth of Books IncludedThe following publications are provided to participants at the
seminar: AWS B1.10, Guide for the Nondestructive Examination ofWelds; AWS Radiographic Interpretation Textbook; AWSRadiographic Interpretation Workbook; and ASNT RadiographicInterpretation.
A three-year individual AWS membership for non-members isalso included. Once you are certified, you will receive a freesubscriptiion to Inspection Trends magazine to keep you informedof the latest developments in testing and materials inspection.
CRI Certification Can Also Be a CWI EndorsementIf you are a CWI or SCWI and you successfully pass your exam for
CRI certification, this endorsement makes your existing certificationeven more valuable. It can also exempt you from your next 9-YearCWI or SCWI Recertification Exam.
NEW! If you are a CWI, certification as a Radiographic Interpreter can now exempt you from your next 9-Year CWI Recertification Exam.
