G R A C E C O M M U N I T Y
Presbyterian Church, PCA ORDER FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD
January 26, 2020 10:30 AM
Reflection:
“Paul’s cause was just and his words about Ananias were true [23:3], but
when the apostle learned that his retort had dishonored the office of
God’s high priest, he humbly repented for the way he had spoken those
words. Paul’s sudden reversal from prophetic wrath to repentant respect
calls us to be counter-cultural, reflecting instead our Lord Jesus’ calm
endurance when He Himself was struck for speaking truth (John 18:19-
23).” Dennis Johnson

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Amen.
Call to Worship...................................................................2 Corinthians 2
Thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession,
and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.
For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved
and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death,
to the other a fragrance from life to life.

Confession of Faith................................................The Belgic Confession*
Ruling Elder Andrew Caudal
Elder: What do you believe about the work of God? People: We believe that God—who is perfectly merciful and also
very just—sent His Son to assume the nature in which disobedience had been committed, in order to bear in it the punishment of sin by His most bitter passion and death.
Elder: And what do you believe about the work of Jesus Christ? People: We believe that Jesus Christ presented Himself in our
name before His Father, to appease His wrath with full satisfaction by offering Himself on the tree of the cross and pouring out His precious blood for the cleansing of our sins, and the prophets had predicted.
Elder: Why did he endure all this? People: He endured all this for the forgiveness of our sins. Elder: What comfort does this give you? People: We find all comforts in His wounds and have no need to
seek or invent any other means to reconcile ourselves with God than this one and only sacrifice, once made, which renders believers perfect forever.
*During the sixteenth century the churches in the Netherlands were exposed to the most
terrible persecution by the Roman Catholic government. To protest against this cruel
oppression, and to prove to the persecutors that the adherents of the Reformed faith were
not rebels, as was laid to their charge, but law-abiding citizens who professed the true
Christian doctrine according to the Holy Scriptures, this confession was prepared in the
year 1561 and stands as one of the best symbolical statements of Reformed doctrine.

your children to remain with you during the sermon. However, in CC they will be

THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER Please see instructions on the inside back cover of your bulletin
Use the quotes below to help focus your heart and mind on this celebration: “I hope what you find in yourself by daily experience, will humble you—but not
discourage you.
For if our Physician is almighty—our disease cannot be desperate. Our sins are
many—but His mercies are more. Our sins are great—but His righteousness is
greater. When our sins prevail, remember that we have an Advocate with the
Father, who is able to pity, to pardon, and to save to the uttermost!
It is better to be admiring the compassion and fullness of grace which is in our
Savior—than to dwell and pore too much upon our own poverty and vileness.”
John Newton
“The salvation of Jesus humbles us profoundly – we are so lost that he had to
die for us. But it exalts and assures us mightily — we are so valued that he
was glad to die for us. Because we are sinners totally accepted by grace, we
have both the humility and the boldness necessary to serve others for their
sake, not ours.” Tim Keller
“For just as sin, addiction, and misery typically go together, so do confession,
healing, and the long process of redemption. We need redemption not just from
our sins and addictions but also from their miseries - particularly those miseries
that occasion more sin and deeper addiction. As all recovering sinners know, this
process of healing and liberation, this ‘conversion unto life,’ this set of lessons to
teach us how to dance again will prove to be as cunning, baffling, powerful, and
patient as addiction itself.” Cornelius Plantinga
“That same Jesus who once died for sinners, still lives at the right hand of
God, to carry on the work of salvation which He came down from heaven to
perform.
He lives to receive all who come unto God by Him, and to give them power to
become the sons of God.
He lives to hear the confession of every heavy-laden conscience, and to grant,
as an almighty High Priest, perfect absolution.
He lives to pour down the Spirit of adoption on all who believe in Him, and to
enable them to cry, Abba, Father!
He lives to be the one Mediator between God and man, the unwearied
Intercessor, the kind Shepherd, the elder Brother, the prevailing Advocate,
the never-failing Priest and Friend of all who come to God by Him.
He lives to be wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption to all His
people—to keep them in life, to support them in death, and to bring them
finally to eternal glory.” J.C. Ryle

Communion Hymns
Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness (#520) – Nikolaus von Zinzendorf
1. Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness
My beauty are, my glorious dress;
’Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed,
With joy shall I lift up my head.
2. Bold shall I stand in Thy great day;
For who aught to my charge shall lay?
Fully absolved through these I am
From sin and fear, from guilt and shame.
3. When from the dust of death I rise
To claim my mansion in the skies,
Ev’n then this shall be all my plea,
Jesus hath lived, hath died, for me.
4. Jesus, the endless praise to Thee,
Whose boundless mercy hath for me—
For me a full atonement made,
An everlasting ransom paid.
5. O let the dead now hear Thy voice;
Now bid Thy banished ones rejoice;
Their beauty this, their glorious dress,
Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness.
Behold the Lamb – Stuart Townend/Keith and Kristyn Getty
1. Behold the Lamb who bears our sins
away, slain for us: and we remember:
The promise made that all who come in
faith find forgiveness at the cross.
So we share in this Bread of life,
And we drink of His sacrifice,
As a sign of our bonds of peace
Around the table of the King.
2. The body of our Savior, Jesus Christ,
Torn for you: eat and remember
The wounds that heal, the death that
brings us life, paid the price to make us
one. So we share in this Bread of Life,
And we drink of His sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of love
Around the table of the King.
3. The blood that cleanses every stain of
sin, shed for you: drink and remember
He drained death's cup that all may enter
in to receive the life of God.
So we share in this Bread of Life,
And we drink of His sacrifice,
As a sign of our bonds of grace
Around the table of the King.
4. And so with thankfulness and faith
We rise to respond: and to remember
Our call to follow in the steps of Christ
As His body here on earth.
As we share in His suffering,
We proclaim: Christ will come again!
And we'll join in the feast of heaven
Around the table of the King.
Savior, like a Shepherd Lead Us (#599) – Dorothy Thrupp/William Bradbury
1. Savior, like a shepherd lead us,
Much we need Thy tender care;
In Thy pleasant pastures feed us,
For our use Thy folds prepare.
Blesséd Jesus, blesséd Jesus!
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are. (2x)
2. We are Thine, Thou dost befriend us,
Be the guardian of our way;
Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us,
Seek us when we go astray.
Blesséd Jesus, blesséd Jesus!
Hear, O hear us when we pray. (2x)
3. Thou hast promised to receive us,
Poor and sinful though we be;
Thou hast mercy to relieve us,
Grace to cleanse and power to free.
Blesséd Jesus, blesséd Jesus!
Let us early turn to Thee. (2x)
4. Early let us seek Thy favor,
Early let us do Thy will;
Blessed Lord and only Savior,
With Thy love our bosoms fill.
Blesséd Jesus, blesséd Jesus!
Thou hast loved us, love us still. (2x)
