Chapter 1

Introduction

Publications are divided into

• Doctoral Theses in Mathematical Sciences

• Licentiate Theses in Mathematical Sciences

• Preprints in Mathematical Sciences

• Master’s Theses in Mathematical Sciences

• Stand-alones, e.g. compendia

with different colors but similar layout. The color

scheme is the same for the entire Centre for Mathe-

matical Sciences. The cover (front and back) for re-

ports/preprints and master’s theses should be done

using either the document class mccover.cls or

the package mccover.sty in LATEX. Using the

package allows you to include the cover in the same

file as the document! This may be useful for, e.g.

publication on the net.

The cover, title page, and copyright page for

doctoral and licentiate theses should be done using

the document classes mcdiss and mcdust.

Serialized publications have numbers that are

obtained through the secretaries when the publica-

tion is ready to go into print.

It is permitted to include a picture on the cover

if the title is not too long; consult AL.

Write, e.g., \documentclass[options]{mcdust}at the beginning of the tex-file to use a class. Write

\usepackage[options]{mccover} somewhere

before \begin{document} to use a package. The

options are listed in Table 1.1 and the commands

in Table 1.2.

mcfonts The package mcfonts.sty changes

the standard fonts to the official university

fonts Garamond and Frutiger (sans serif ),

both in text-mode and in math-mode. This

package can be used independently of the

others and has no options.

mccover The class mccover.cls produces the

front and back covers of all A4-sized publica-

tions. Use it when you only want the cover.

The package mccover.sty can be used

with most classes, e.g. article.cls, to

produce the front and back covers of all A4-

sized publications in the same file as the rest

of the document.

mcdust The document class mcdust.cls pro-

duces the (inner) title page and copyright

page of a doctoral or licentiate thesis. The

text is formated to fit the prescribed format.

Send the postscript-file to KFSigma.

mcdiss The document class mcdiss.cls pro-

duces the front and spine covers of a doctoral

or licentiate thesis. Give KFSigma a paper

copy and sent them the postscript-file.

Chapter 2

The mcfonts package

2.1 Introduction

The package mcfonts.sty is included with

\usepackage{mcfonts} (there are no options)

and replaces the usual text-font (Computer Mod-

ern) with the official font of Lund University

(Garamond1) in both text and maths. Further, all

sans serifs are replaced with the Lund University

official font (Frutiger2) in both text and maths

and the Greek font is replace by one that fits better

with Garamond (the one used by the Greek ba-

bel). Since mcfonts reads the amssymb-package

you don’t have to do that.

2.2 Peculiarities

View has problems with Garamond so use gv in-

stead. If you use the amsmath-package the size of

text in math-mode (\textrm etc.) is automati-

cally set in the correct size, otherwise it will always

be \normalsize.

Since Garamond doesn’t have a nice pure

mathematics font with space around the charac-

ters some character combinations, e.g. $fi$ (fi),

are written as ligatures (one character). These can

be broken into two characters by inserting a set of

curly brackets in between, e.g. $f{}i$ (f i). Also,

since the font encoding has been changed, you will

get a lot (seven) warnings of the type

LaTeX Font Warning: Encoding ‘OML’

has changed to ‘OT1’ for symbol font

(Font) ‘letters’ in the math

version ‘normal’ on input line 179.

These should be ignored.

2.3 Differences between garagrek

0.3 and mcfonts

The mcfonts-package requires the new TEX-

version (source /usr/common4/teTeX/bin/

setcommontexsol) and has fewer problems with

font sizes, and yet another Greek standard font.

The Sans serifs is now Frutiger. There is no op-

tion for slanted maths; the default math font is

italic for Latin and slanted for Greek characters.

The new command \symit gives italic Greek in

math-mode. There are commands for euro and

permille signs as well as some rare Greek charac-

ters.

By popular demand, version 1.1 of mcfonts

resurrects the variant forms ε, θ, $, %, and φ as

\oldname.

2.4 Effects

Ordinary text

All ordinary text is set in Garamond and all sans

serifs in Frutiger. This also applies to digits

(0123456789) and plus (+), minus (-), and equal-

ity (=) in text-mode.

(NE)

2”Frutiger [frytig :’r], Adrian, f. 1928, schweizisk-fransk bokstavskonstnar. F. har skapat ett stort antal typsnitt, bl.a. Frutiger,Univers och Meridien. Sedan 1958 har han varit konstnarlig ledare for stilgjuteriet Deberny & Peignot i Paris.” (NE)

Page 9: G PROFILE OF THE CENTRE FOR MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES · GRAPHICAL PROFILE OF THE CENTRE FOR MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES MCFONTS, MCCOVER, MCDUST, AND MCDISS ANNA LINDGREN User’s Guide June

2.5 Commands 7

Mathematics

Variable names: Variable names (Latin upper and

lower-case) are set with italic Garamond.

Digits and names of functions: Digits in math-

mode are replaced by the same Garamond

digits as those in text-mode; there is no dif-

ference between 1 (1) and $1$ (1). Further,

functions with text-names, such as ln (\ln)

and sin (\sin) are set with the same upright

Garamond font as ordinary text.

Greek: The font for Greek letters is replaced by

one that fits better with Garamond and

the standard upper-case letters are italic

(slanted). The letter commands have been

expanded with those letters that where iden-

tical to Latin letters in the old font (Alpha,

Beta, etc.), because the Greek font is not

Garamond which means that $A$ (A) and

$\Alpha$ (

) no longer look the same.

Operators: All operators in math-mode (+, ≤,∑n

i=1, etc.) look the same as before. How-

ever, + and = in text-mode has been changed

to Garamond.

2.5 Commands

There are quite a few old and new commands

for changing the look of the text. They

work according to the principle \textxx{text},

$\mathxx{aA1}$, and $\symxx{formula}$.

Commands in text-mode

The commands are listed in Table 2.1. The usual

commands for changing the look of the text work

as before. They can also be used to generate text

(including aao and space) inside a formula; note

that they don’t automatically adjust the size of the

text unless you have included the amsmath pack-

age; cf. \mathxx. There are also commands for the

euro symbol and permille.

Commands in math-mode

The commands are listed in Table 2.2 and Ta-

ble 2.3. The command series \mathxx has no

longer any effect on upper-case Greek letters. The

commands \mathcal (caligraphic) and \mathbb

(blackboard bold), taken from amssymb are, as

usual, only useful for upper-case Latin letters.

As before, math-mode cannot handle aao and

ignores blanks. In such cases you can use the text

commands, but all text in them will be normal-

sized unless you either include amsmath or explic-

itly change the size. If you don’t include amsmath

you have to write $p {\textrm{\scriptsizesokt}}$ to get psokt instead of psokt.

The new command series \symxx affects most

things in a formula and is a development of,

e.g. \boldmath, which now can be replaced by

\symbf.

Some mathematical typesetting rules

Given names are set with upright (roman) letters

(use \mathrm and \symrm), e.g.

e ≈ 2.72, ≈ 3.14, (x) =

1√2

e−x2/2, 1 m, 8 , x

It might be useful to define

\newcommand{\e}{{\mathrm{e}}} af-

ter which you can write $\e \approx

2.72$.

Variables are set with italic letters (default), e.g.

ei ∈ N (0, ), = P, ∈ (0, 2 ),

E(X ) =

Greek, etc.

Commands for the variant forms of certain Greek

lower-case letters are retained in order to be com-

patible with the old version but the only one that

has any special effect is \varsigma which gives

a final sigma. The old forms that differ from the

new ones can be accessed by the series \oldname.

Note, however, that the only variation available to

these is boldface. Use care when switching between

mcfonts and no-mcfonts. There are now com-

mands for all Greek letters, even those that usu-

ally look like Latin. There are also some more un-

usual letters, such as digamma ( , ) and qoppa

( ). Those who intend to write Greek text, how-

ever, should use \usepackage[greek]{babel}instead.

Chapter 3

The cover generators

3.1 Introduction

The package and document classes for generat-

ing covers work independently of the mcfonts-

package so if you use the mccover-package and

want Garamond on the inside text you must in-

clude mcfonts as well. The document classes only

produce covers or the dust-cover/copyright page so

there is no need for any Garamond there.

Class or Package?

The mccover-package allows you to include the

cover with the rest of your A4-sized document

which is useful if you, e.g. want to publish it on

the net. The \frontcover-command produces

two pages, the front cover and its empty inside,

and then starts a new page with page number set

to one. The \backcover-command produces at

least two pages, the empty inside of the back cover

and the back cover itself. If the twoside option of

the document class (e.g. article) is used it also

ensures that the empty inside is an odd-numbered

(right-hand side) page.

\documentclass[twoside]{article}

\usepackage[ms]{mccover}

\maintitle{Title}

% other commands, e.g. author’s name

\begin{document}

\frontcover

The text of the compendium

(in mathematical statistics, [ms])

goes here.

\backcover

\end{document}

The mccover-class can be used when all you want

is the cover, and nothing else. The \frontcover-

command then produces only one page, the front

cover, and the \backcover-command produces

one page, the back cover.

\documentclass[ms]{mccover}

\maintitle{Title}

% other commands, e.g. author’s name

\begin{document}

\frontcover

% No text here

\backcover

\end{document}

The mccover-package

You may have to delete the old .aux-files before

running latex using the mccover-package for

the first time; babel gets confused for some rea-

son.

The cover will look the same regardless of the

layout of the internal text, for instance, the normal

size on the cover is 12pt and the title starts 40mm

below the top of the paper regardless of your choice

of margins, etc.

You can use any font-size you want in your

document, mccover ignores your choice when

producing the covers.

The paper-size is set to A4 even if you don’t use

an a4-option in your document class.

The font on the cover is Frutiger whether you

choose to include the mcfonts-package or not.

An example

The tex-file that produced this manual looks like

this:

centiate theses (mcdust).

Example: \ISBN{91-628-3499-1}

Issue number \issnum{year}{issue}Mandatory for theses (mcdust and [master])

and reports ([report]).

Year and issue for publications in the Preprints,

Doctoral Theses, Licentiate Theses, and Master’s

Theses series. Shown as 1999:7 or 1999:E7. The

letter E for master’s thesis is generated automati-

cally. Example: \issnum{1999}{7}

Serial number\sernum{affiliation}{number}{year}Mandatory for theses (mcdust and [master])

and reports ([report]). One series for each com-

bination of field, faculty, and publication type.

Affiliation consists of six letters determining

university, faculty, and field as follows:

1–2 LU for Lund University

3–4 either NF for Faculty of Science or TF for

Faculty of Technology

5–6 either MA for Mathematics, MS for Mathe-

matical Statistics, or NA for Numerical Anal-

ysis

Number is the serial number, sometimes con-

tinued from the old number series. Numbers

1001–1999 are reserved for doctoral theses, 2001–

2999 for licentiate theses, 3001–4999 for master’s

theses, and 5001– for reports.

Year is the year of publication.

Example: The first master’s thesis in mathemati-

cal statistics at the faculty of technology, published

in 1999: \sernum{LUTFMS}{3001}{1999}

Data specifications

\maintitle{title} The main title, set with small caps so that capital letters

become large capitals and “small” letters become smaller

capitals. Write English titles with “book capitalization,” i.e.

capitalize the initial letter of all words except the

unimportant ones such as and, of, and with.

The line width is quite small so, please, insert line-breaks at

well-chosen points, preferably before “small” words.SOME PROOFS

OF AN INTERESTING THEOREM

WITH APPLICATIONS TO SNOW

Example: \maintitle{Some Proofs\\ of an

Interesting Theorem\\ with Applications to

Snow}Book-like compendia often have short titles. They may be

set using all caps.LINEAR SYSTEMS Example: \maintitle{LINEAR SYSTEMS}\backtitle{backtitle} mcdiss only. Optional. To be used to supply a shorter

version if the main title is too long to fit on the spine. A

warning message is produced if that might be the case. Some Proofs of an Interesting

Theorem. . .

Example: \backtitle{Some Proofs of an

Interesting Theorem\dots}\subtitle{subtitle} Optional. The subtitle, set in small caps with a smaller font

than the main title.STATISTICS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS Example:

\subtitle{Statistics and

Telecommunications}\authors{authors} Optional. The names of the authors. Use a tilde between

the first and last names of each author to prevent line

breaks.ANDERS NILSSON-STIG Example: \authors{Anders~Nilsson-Stig}

When there are several authors there are some different

alternatives for arranging them:ANDERS NILSSON-STIG

HENRIK PERBECK

One author per line:

\authors{Anders~Nilsson-Stig\\Henrik~Perbeck}

ANDERS NILSSON, HENRIK PERBECK,

AND PER HENRIKSSON

As many authors as possible per line, separated by commas

and (the last two) by “, and~” or “ och~”; note the tilde:

\authors{Anders~Nilsson, Henrik~Perbeck,

and~Per~Henriksson}\issnum{year}{issue} Issue number; see Section 3.3. Mandatory for theses
