There is however a difference of opinion as to what kind of tasting this refers to. The Shulchan Aruch (OC 210:2) first cites an opin- ion that tasting does not require a Bracha even where the sample is swallowed, as long as the amount swallowed is less than a Revi’is (~3 ounces). It then cites another opinion that tasting is only free from a Bracha if after tasting the food it was not swallowed but spat out. As a result, the Rema and other authorities rule that given the doubt one would not make a Bracha on such tastings. In order to avoid this question it may be ideal for the one who is tasting the food to choose to either spit it out after tasting it, or simply to consider in advance that they are swallowing not simply for sampling purposes but also for enjoyment of the sample per se.

PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK RUSHED OR RELAXED

One of the aspects which distinguished the way the Jews celebrated Pesach in Egypt is the in-

struction that they eat it in a hurried manner (TB Pesachim 96a). Whereas the Seder was subse-

quently to be conducted b’heseiba (reclining), in a relaxed manner, in Egypt they were told to eat it

with their belts tightened, their shoes on and their walking sticks in hand (12:11). The reason for this

would seem to be that they had to be ready to leave in a hurry. On the other hand we know that

while the plague occured at midnight, the Jewish People did not leave until the middle of the next day

(12:41). They deliberately did not react immediately to the Egyptians’ demand that they leave, insist-

ing instead that they leave in broad daylight, proudly (see Pirkei d’Rabbi Eliezer ch. 48). What then

was the purpose of the unusually rushed eating if they were not to leave until morning?

HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR

“SEASON TO TASTE”; THE CHEF’S BRACHA

The Talmud (TB Brachos 14a) states that one who tastes a food to check for its seasoning or

temperature does not need to make a Bracha on that food - despite the fact that eating even small

amounts requires a Bracha - as “tasting” is not considered eating. There is however a difference of

opinion as to what kind of tasting this refers to. The Shulchan Aruch (OC 210:2) first cites an opin-

ion that tasting does not require a Bracha even where the sample is swallowed, as long as the amount

swallowed is less than a Revi’is (~3 ounces). It then cites another opinion that tasting is only free

from a Bracha if after tasting the food it was not swallowed but spat out. As a result, the Rema and

other authorities rule that given the doubt one would not make a Bracha on such tastings. In order

to avoid this question it may be ideal for the one who is tasting the food to choose to either spit it

out after tasting it, or simply to consider in advance that they are swallowing not simply for sampling

purposes but also for enjoyment of the sample per se.
