Leo & Iris Skipper House Private Deep Creek

c.1900

The Leo and Iris Skipper house is a two story, two by one bay structure in the ell configuration. The ell, one-bay by one-bay, extends on the northwest side of the facade.

The house rests on a stone foundation. Weatherboards cover the house which is framed with cornerboards.

To the east of the main house is a small &tory-and-a-half, two-bay by one-bay structure with gable roof and exterior cinderblock chimney.

Leo Skipper, born in the smaller house on the property, built the main house.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

This frame house is situated in a wooded area just south of Deep Creek Lake and north of Bray Hill. The house faces north. It is a two story, two-bay by one-bay structure in the ell configuration. The ell, one-bay by one-bay, extends on the northwest side of the facade. The house has gable roofs. A shingled open porch extends across the front to the ell. An enclosed porch extends across the rear of the house.

Two central brick chimneys appear, one on the the other on the ell wing. The house is lit by 1/1 framed by plain flat boards. One small single-pane on the second floor interior side of the front ell.

The cellar can be entered from the front, northwest, facade of the house.

The house rests on a stone foundation. Weatherboards cover the house which is framed with cornerboards.Octagonal shingles appear in the gables. The roof is covered with asphalt shingles.

To the east of the main house is a small story-and-a-half, two-bay by one-bay structure with gable roof and exterior cinderblock chimney.

This house is an example of a common Western Maryland type. Houses of this general configuration, a rectangular main block and rear kitchen wing, were constructed in Garrett County from the late 19th through the early 20th centuries.

Leo Skipper, born in the smaller house on the property, built the main house.
