This book is intended for the newly graduated engineer involved with the design of space instrumentation and can be used as text to support undergraduate and MSc courses. It contains a very concise and complete overview of the field. The main areas are treated in separate sections including the ‘mechanical design’, ‘thermal design’, ‘electronics’, and ‘mechanisms’. In addition ‘space optics’ and ‘project management and control’ are discussed. Starting with the underlying principles each main section includes the key elements needed for a proper design. These are illustrated by a set of simplified cases including the necessary numerical parame- ters. This enables the reader, who does not need to be an expert in a given field, to assess the feasibility of a design without the need to perform full numerical simulations. As such it is a very helpful guide during the early stages of the design but also the more experienced reader will find the sections outside his/her personal field of competence very instructive. Proceedings of a symposium organized by the International Space University, to bring together people intersted in the practical applications of space applications, in order to share views and to exchange ideas on the way forward. The book has nine sections, dealing with topics like strategic issues, teleservices, markets for 2020, Earth observations, technological issues.
