Dr. David M. Albala, medical director of Associated Medical Professionals (AMP), was re-cently elected to LUGPA’s 2018 board of directors.

Albala oversees the clinical operations of 30 physicians at AMP, the organization said in a news release. He is also chief of urology at Crouse Hospital, where he focuses on robotic, laparoscop-ic, stone, and endourological research.

LUGPA (lugpa.org) is an association represent-ing independent urology group practices in the U.S. It includes more than 2,300 physicians who make up over one-fourth of the nation’s practic-ing urologists, and provide more than 30 percent of the total urologic care in the U.S. Albala is the associate editor of Reviews in Urology, the official

journal of LUGPA.“Dr. Albala’s diverse back-

ground in both academic medicine and private practice has thoroughly prepared him to assist this organization in furthering urologic collabora-tion, cooperation and commit-ment,” Celeste Kirschner, CEO of LUGPA, said in the release.

Albala was previously director of minimally invasive and robotic urologic surgery at Duke University Medical Center. He received his doctor-ate from Michigan State University after obtaining his bachelor’s degree from Lafayette College.

NATIVE TACTICS VS. “NEWER”

What has been the key to Downtown Syracuse’s revitaliza-tion and what role has your organization and/or project played in it?

The key is seeing opportunity and acting on it. As BHG began to outgrow our previous space, we looked at moving to Franklin Square and saw opportunity to rebuild, reinvigorate and grow even more. We took four dilapidated, abandoned buildings and turned them into two modern, beautiful buildings; an employee tness center; and a parking lot. It’s important to us to be close to downtown to help attract young talent that wants to be near the action. It’s been exciting to be part of the transformation in our neighborhood.

Describe your project (and/or organization) and what is distinctive about it?

We’re experts in healthcare professionals’ borrowing needs. We understand their hectic schedules and their oftentimes immediate needs for working capital, which is why we make the loan appli-cation and funding processes as fast and convenient as possible. Since our founding 16 years ago in Syracuse, we’re proud to have become the leading provider of nancial solutions for healthcare professionals. We’ve enjoyed growing our business in Syracuse and are fortunate to have incredibly smart, talented people driving our success and making BHG a great place to work.

Where is downtown Syracuse heading in the future and what challenges remain?

Organizations like Centerstate CEO and Downtown Committee of Syracuse need to help drive a successful future for Syracuse. The challenge is attracting businesses in such a high tax climate. Something has to be changed to make doing business in Syracuse, and New York State as a whole, aordable for owners. We also need to make Syracuse more family-friendly by improving the schools and oering more family-centric activities. And as more couples start their families, what can be done to keep them downtown?

What is next for your organization and what is its outlook?BHG is driven by innovation, and we have exciting new oerings

planned for 2018. We have a very positive outlook and forecast continued growth, maintaining our upward momentum over the past 16 years. Beyond nancial success, BHG is focused on increasing our sta and expanding our locations in Syracuse.

ASK THE EXPERT

Workers’ Compensation Changes in 2018

E mployers across New York State will be impacted by changes that will be coming in 2018.

The NY Compensation Insurance Rating Board approved an average rate decrease of 4.5%. Each w.c. class code has a loss cost. The loss cost is the starting point that the insurance companies usewhen pricing a workers’ compensation policy. In-surance companies then multiply the loss cost by the loss cost multiplier (their expense factor). This is the rate employers see on their policies. For em-ployers whose class codes went down, they shouldsee a rate decrease on their 2018 workers’ compen-sation policies.

The second change is aimed at tackling the drug issue that is impacting workers’ compensation. This includes both opioids and over prescribing of medication. The NYS Workers’ Compensation Board is developing a comprehensive pharmacy prescription drug formulary. This formulary will al-low physicians to prescribe drugs on the approved

list. If they want to prescribe drugs outside the list, they will need to obtain a variance. The goal is to reduce the cost of prescription drugs on a workers’ compensation claim and address the opioid/addic-tion issue. This is something that is being done in all areas of health care.

A third change that will impact workers’ com-pensation claims in 2018 are new permanent im-pairment guidelines. The permanent impairment guidelines are used to evaluate claims where there may be permanency and the worker is entitled to a schedule loss of use. The NYS Workers’ Compen-sation Board has developed new guidelines that will incorporate advances in medicine that result in better outcomes for injured workers. There has been much debate from both sides as to the ben-ets of the new guidelines. Time will tell if this is negative or positive impact.

There are many dierent factors and parties in-volved in workers’ compensation. Employers don’t have control over all of these. They should focus their eorts on what they can control and that is being proactive within their organization. Good Luck in 2018!Published by Tony D’Amato, Senior Client Advisor at CH. Six Key Guidelines for Email Security

By Jeremy Stewart Head of IT & Data Security, Strategic Financial Services, Inc.

OPEN WITH CARE - Do not open attachments from known or unknown sources that you are not expecting.

HOVER AND INSPECT - Always mouse over a link within an email to determine its destination is legitimate and matches the source of the email.

CONFIRM BEFORE CLICKING - If an email comes from a known source, but you are not expecting it, or it is just out of the ordinary, call the sender before clicking on a link or opening an attachment.

GO TO THE SOURCE - Use your web browser to go directly to any site that requires you to log in, do not access them through an email link.

DON’T TAKE THE BAIT - Companies usually do not send unsolicited email to verify your account information, nor do they request immediate action be taken or you risk the termination or suspension of your account. These are standard phishing tactics, delete the message immediately.

SEND SAFELY - When sending an email that contains PII (Personally Identifiable Information), use a secure email system such as Citrix Sharefile or Zix.

Workers’ Compensation Changes in 2018

E mployers across New York State will be impacted by changes that will be coming in 2018.

The NY Compensation Insurance Rating Board approved an average rate decrease of 4.5%. Each w.c. class code has a loss cost. The loss cost is the starting point that the insurance companies use when pricing a workers’ compensation policy. In-surance companies then multiply the loss cost by the loss cost multiplier (their expense factor). This is the rate employers see on their policies. For em-ployers whose class codes went down, they should see a rate decrease on their 2018 workers’ compen-sation policies.

The NYS Workers’ Compen-sation Board has developed new guidelines that will incorporate advances in medicine that result in better outcomes for injured workers.
