DESCRIPTION

Everyone has heard of HID but there is an awful lot of snakeoil out there that consumers should be aware of. Realise that there are a lot of backyard businesses and some manufacturers who are buying generic 20 dollar Chinese ballasts and bulbs that frankly are just unreliable and a poor investment. Well known brands are charging several hundred dollars for just 2 ballasts and bulbs? If you look for information on forums re Chinese HID's you will soon see a pattern of random quality, mismatched bulb colour rendering etc etc. There is a better way... BUT it took FYRLYT to design and engineer a light tough enough to deliver. A light for life... NOW that is a good investment.

Performance, versatility and durability... In one.

Consider what really makes a good driving light?

Remember, a lights output is the SUM of its PARTS!

FYRLYT is deliberately not HID or LED... Read on.

Just like cars and trucks there are many choices for different uses. FYRLYT has designed a single hyper performance driving light with ®distance without sacrificing all important volume. Our German xenophot bulb produces a light source to maximize driving safety with

consideration to minimizing glare to combat eye fatigue over long distances often experienced by professional drivers and travelers.

A driving light is not a spotlight. Nothing is more irritating or worse, fatiguing, than driving behind a bouncing column of light even if you believe it can light up a kangaroo or a moose at 1 mile as the salesman excitedly told you or a well meaning internet forum poster is claiming. It is not what is at the end of a ‘laser beam’ that you should be concerned about! Let’s get back to basics. Your vision at night is compromised and indeed as you get older that condition increases commensurately with age. At an average cruising speed of between 55-70MPH (85-110kmh) what is important is the effective illumination in the immediate 500 yards (450m) in your field of vision to hopefully give you enough time to react to a ‘situation’ of not what is just in front of you but to the side as well. To design a quality light output that has distance and peripheral volume to that distance is quite a task. Our tuned reflector and bulb delivers what we believe to be the ideal driving light in all areas and beyond with no compromise. No bright hot spots or harsh glare... Just quality.

This is where many people are often misled by advertising hype based on misinformation at a rudimentary technical level. You cannot deny the laws of physics and it is within this reality that FYRLYT designs its products.

1: BULB (incandescent, HID or LED - All very different!)2: REFLECTOR (shape, thermal tolerance, reflectivity and durability)3: OPTICS (lens & other surfaces - optical values and durability)

It is possible to have a high output bulb with a compromised reflector and or lens/filter design that results in poor light output performance for the task of driving. Additionally, product durability is defined by the housing and mount design, materials and manufacturing. FYRLYT chooses a pragmatic design approach on combining all relevant features into the best possible design and outcome for a specific purpose.

Surprised? Our design team was set a high standard to achieve... ”Simply create a halogen light that will outperform HID & LED in the form of a hyper-performance driving light. Not just distance, but volume and quality of light for long periods of driving.” The end result is one we believe has set a new benchmark.FYRLYT has shown that you can get the simplicity and reliability of Halogen with better than HID performance and of course the associated cost savings. It is now time for the market to decide.

HID is a case of buyer beware. Ask questions! We are not saying HID is a bad choice and indeed we do not rule out the possibility of utilizing it if it were to offer a superior lighting solution. We have examined many HID ballasts and bulbs that commonly originate from Asia whilst noting a widely held point of view amongst experts and forums that the quality is a bit "hit and miss"; with ballasts malfunctioning, bulb colour temperature variants and problematic bulb arc points and corresponding profiles.

Photos that tell quite a story...We appreciate some maybe skeptical about our claims and that included many of our first customers in Australia. Truck drivers and experienced 4wders were often steadfast in what many of them believed about driving light performance, especially in HID and the recent increase in wattage offerings, 50W and 70W. Some refused to believe that FYRLYT could match their larger sized reflector lights in light output and distance. We can only do so much in print or photos etc and the reality is perception is subjective. However, without fail, people who see FYRLYT in operation for the first time are generally overwhelmed and find it hard to comprehend the quality of light, distance and volume.

Shootout & ConclusionsWe took a series of photos opposite to compare FYRLYTagainst what many people consider premium driving lightsrenowned for performance. At a distance of 60 meters (65yds)we aimed a single unit of each @ 14V. Remember the 24V 150WFYRLYT is easily run on a 12V system using our DC-DC convertor.Remembering these are single units, it is easy to see the broadvolume of light from the FYRLYT in comparison to the very tightspot of the others. The FYRLYT is in its SPOT mode with the option to change to SPREAD with a push and twist of the bulb holder in seconds. Remember the 150W FYRLYT is a true 5000lumen output.

Why does FYRLYT havemore volume & intensity? It’s the combination of the horizontal filament bulb with the filament tuned reflector and optics. Too tight a spot with a defined edge is very fatiguing to drive behind for any length of time. Our design team designed the output to meet all vital criteria that professional drivers and enthusiasts have been asking for and will really appreciate.

Many assume that HIDwould be a clear winner?Going back to our information on HID ratings you can see that the HID lumen ratings from 35/50/70W actually achieved are still less than the 5000 lumens we are utilizing. Therefore to be blunt the answer is NO. What confuses some people is the effect of glare and the fact of looking into an HID type light source is typically blinding. Additionally the misconception of whiter light being more effective which does not withstand scientific or physiological scrutiny. Once past 4300K you are in an area of advertising hype and diminishing returns. As the designer and manufacturer we are naturally very firm inour convictions relying on sound research and never being afraidto ask questions and listen to the market. By challenging the status quo we believe we are offering a product of extraordinaryperformance and long term value.

FYRLYT, side by side with our friends & family on

and off-road. Heading beyond 90,000 plus strong! From the outset FYRLYT was destined to be different. After more combined years in the industry than we care to admit to,it continues to evolve in a way that never ceases to amaze us and others. We concluded it is the result of one dynamic. That of sharing a common passion that unites all regardless of location or culture. Yes we have a business to run and with it many default challenges but what empowers us is the real value of relationships and becoming the product of choice to the informed enthusiast who is seeking the best possible auxiliary lighting for their vehicle. We only began the Facebook fan page as our virtual camp’ FYR’ in April 2011 and yet by Febuary 2012 we are expecting to be at 90,000+. Not a ‘typo’... Ninety thousand plus! There will always be room for you BUT bring your own marshmallows... Oh yes, meet Mr Benson...

35W, 50W, 70W HID? What are you really getting? On HIDs, All 35 watt units measure watts out of ballast to lamp, OEM or Aftermarket (China). Note input to 35watt units is approx 42 watts. Average lumen output = 2800 /3200L. All HIDs above 35W eg /50W /70W measure input to ballast not output therefore to get watts to the lamp x 80% (ballast losses) to get approx watts.

35W is actually 42W input resulting in 35W to lamp with average lumen output of 2800/3200 Lumens50W input x 80% ballast efficiency= 40W to lamp x approx 85% Lumen/Watts (China) = 3400 Lumen output70W input x 80% ballast efficiency= 56W to lamp x approx 85% Lumen/Watts (China) = 4750 Lumens outputFYRLYT’s 150W Xenophot = 5000 Lumens output

But don’t forget, this is just the light source! Final achieved output is its relationship with the reflector and optics.

150W? Power draw? The reality is a pair of 150W bulbs will draw 300W and some people will decree the sky is falling! The reality isthe majority of vehicles can manage this with no issue.Consider how many vehicles you see with 3 or even more 100W lights? This mind set may have once been relevant but times have moved on since old fashioneddynamos and early generators.

150W too hot? Really? Yes, high wattage halogen bulbs generate heat and in any light with a plastic reflector or lesser engineered materials or design you will have issues with high thermal loads. However, FYRLYT was engineered from the ground up to operate in these conditions without issue. Additionally our German 150W 5000 lumen bulb has 30% more Lumens/Watt than generic halogen. Fact not fiction.

150W? Power draw?

FYRLYT Lights are Rebuildable • We want you as a customer for life on or off road!

The Filament Tuned Reflector FTR has been geometrically optimised to realise the full potential of the Luminous Flux produced by the light source, directing more light where it is needed. Manufactured from aluminium with a robust base and hard top coat, the FYRLYT reflector possesses exceptionally high spectral reflectance whilst being scratch, chemical and heat resistant.

The lens has been designed to be readily replaceable without tools, making lens covers redundant. With FYRLYT the lens and cover are one and the same. This eliminates the compounding light losses induced by the 2 redundant plastic to air surface transitions that come with transparent lens covers. This with the reduction in operating temperature is valuable in maximising light performance. The simple lens removal also allows for the bulb to be changed from the front of the light if the mounting limits rear access.

Management of the operating temperature of high performance lights is crucial. FYRLYT has integrated a quick release system for fast bulb change with a high performance aluminum alloy heat sink, manufactured from T6060-T5. This feature is an essential component in facilitating the use of high performance light sources whilst maintaining acceptable operating temperatures.

The Integrated Spread or Spot beam, provides two factory set beam patterns in the one light that can be adjusted to suit the driving conditions in seconds by pushing and rotating the bulb holder.

® The Gore Vent breather reduces the possibility of water ingress when operated in moist air whilst paradoxically providing a seal if the light is submerged. This is achieved by its breathing characteristics which provides a means to maintain a near to equilibrium air pressure to that of ambient by releasing pressure caused by the temperature rise when the light is in use. Conversely it allows an inflow of air when it cools to eliminate the creation of a significant vacuum within the light.

The billet machined Aluminum Alloy (T6060-T5) base maintains its impact strength at extremely low temperatures unlike some metals and plastics, whilst providing exceptional resistance to vibration. This ensures the light maintains the set position in the most adverse operating conditions. In addition it provides infinitely variable adjustment within a 25mm (1.0") range.

The hard coating applied to both the lens and reflector optical surfaces provides improved chemical and scratch resistance to the base materials, maximising the longevity of the optical performance of the light. When comparing other lights, ask if their reflector and lens are hard coated?

The fasteners and spring in FYRLYT are manufactured from austenitic stainless steels for optimum corrosion resistance. FYRLYT considers every potential scenario and utilizes the best grade of materials for durability.

The non metallic components of FYRLYT are manufactured from high impact reinforced and non reinforced engineering polymers with exceptionally high impact and fatigue characteristics. This coupled with higher than normal wall sections have created an extremely robust configuration.

All components can be individually purchased as spares and thanks to smart design are simple for the owner to reassemble to as good as new.

FYRLYT’s unique features deliver you real benefits. When you add it up, other lights just don’t compare.

FYRLYT has performance & durability designed in.

FYRLYT, side by side with our friends & family on

and off-road. Heading beyond 100,000 plus strong! We only began the Facebook fan page as our virtual camp’ FYR’ in April 2011 and yet by April 2012 we are expecting to be at 100,000+. Not a ‘typo’... one hundred thousand plus!

Why FYRLYT says ‘NO’ to CLIP-ON Filters

What makes a quality driving light?

The ‘TRUTH’ about 50/70/100 W HIDS

The ‘VALUE’ proposition. Save $$$

Blue filters & Blue bulbs. Light loss!

Why ‘BRIGHTER & WHITER’ is wrong!

How FYRLYT is designed for life.

Cat amongst the turkeys

One of the principles that weighs heavily on the mind of all good product designers is value. This is a fairly vague concept in itself, but not so when taken with a dose of context…. I found it easiest to understand when described to me as “value in use”…. That is the total cost the consumer bears to satisfy the need, want or desire in question.

The simplest form of explanation I can offer is one where you could buy a car for 30% less than others in the same class….to the uninitiated this would represent good value until we consider the total fuel consumption and maintenance over the life of the vehicle. Quite quickly this apparent value can look fairly sad and is always worthy of some investigation. A relatively simple concept to explain using a motor vehicle purchase as most consumers are aware of this concept as it applies to car purchases. But how does it apply to driving lights??….. More on this in a moment.

During the development phase of FYRLYT this value in use principle was used to challenge the validity of HID Vs. Halogen to determine the best “value in use” solution for the consumer as it relates to high performance driving lights. This is where the FYRLYT story really begins.

When the average market price (AUD$1,600.00) for a quality pair of HID driving lights like the Hella Predator (a favourite of mine by the way) IPF or Lightforce are considered with respect to the primary attributes (features) such as luminous flux produced, current draw and cost the story begins to unfold. The luminous flux by the way is the amount of light produced by the source (bulb) within the visible spectrum (The light we can see)….. Measured most commonly in Lumens……. This is not to be confused with Lux…… Lux in the simplest of terms is the light equivalent to pressure…. That is how much light (Lumens) are distributed per unit area….. Collectively these terms are best thought of as the Lumen being the pound and Lux, the pound per square inch. The higher the Lux the brighter the target object will be.

Now after a few hours of use a very good quality 45 watt HID (commonly advertised as a 50W by the way) will produce around 100 lumens per watt. This makes available around 4500 Lumens for the reflector to do its stuff with. The reflector, well that’s another story in its own right, more on that some other day but it’s within the scope of this document to state that the relationship between the two is of absolute critical importance in order to direct the available light into a useful format. It is also worthy of a mention at this point that the performance of a light cannot be judged by either component in isolation.

Now when we compared the potential market price point (RRP) of a Halogen driving light designed with performance and value in mind the FYRLYT team discovered it could deliver a superior light > 4500 lumens at source (5000 Lumens in fact) for $1,000.00 less than the RRP of good quality HID’s…. This was simply an outstanding discovery and result for all but the producers of HID’s.

So where does this leave the current draw argument? When you compare the typical 50w HID which draws 50 watts and delivers 45w to the bulb, we find that the typical installation of two lights will draw 8.33 amps on a 12 volt system. This is 16 amps less than the FYRLYT 5000 lumen…. this is a lot you say…but is it good value?...The net effect of all of this is you have typically payed AUD$1,000.00 more for HID’s to save 16 amps when compared to the FYRLYT 5000 Lumen driving light, and for less performance to boot.

Broken down to the simplest of terms HID light manufacturers and marketers believe that paying AUD$1,000.00 for 16 amps or $62.50 per amp represents good value….. We beg to differ.

So what does this mean in an applied situation…? …By this reasoning a HID manufacturer would be retailing a 90 amp alternator at $5,625.00 ($62.50/amp x 90amp) I couldn’t imagine sales booming at that price, none the less now that FYRLYT has emerged that is what they are in fact selling in the absence of hyper output to justify the cost.

If you’re reasoning for HID driving lights is twofold, hyper performance and an increase in available current to apply to other tasks I suggest you take that $1,000.00 dollars wasted on HID and apply half of it to a larger alternator and you will get yourself an additional 100 amps of available capacity compared to a trivial 16 amps and still have $500.00 left over to spend on something to plug into it.

If you are after performance you are paying a lot ($1,000.00 more) for 20% less than the hyper performance of FYRLYT halogen, hardly a good value proposition.

It is important to note that 300 watts of draw on most modern cars is well within their capability. In fact I have a 1976 FJ45 affectionately labelled as FUGLY on our Facebook page that has been running the first prototypes for some time faultlessly off a 55 amp alternator. So if you are after pure performance you will pocket a full $1,000.00 saving on the standard vehicle, either way you are miles in front.

By either measure, be it performance or amp draw HID’s fail to deliver value when compared to Halogen designed well. It is important to note at this point that on average HID’s will lose 25-30% of their output per watt over the life of the bulb…. This would put the average output over the life of the bulb for a 50 watt unit around 4000-4300 Lumens give or take, difficult to justify $1,000.00 extra..….. for less performance when compared to the stable output of a quality halogen system producing 5000 lumens.

In defence of HID it does possess a subjective characteristic (colour) that has perception value, and as such is beyond the scope of this document…. Colour is purely a matter of opinion and FYRLYT is not in the business of debating matters of opinion only matters of fact. We will leave that matter for discussion at the bar or around the 'campfyr'..

WHITE PAPER #001 • VALUE

“Form & Function engineered by Fact not Fiction”“Form & Function engineered by Fact not Fiction”

WHITE PAPER #002 • EFFECTS OF CLIP-ON FILTERS & ‘BLUE’. WHITE PAPER #003 • 100W HIDS? How many lumens?Blue filters and blue coated lamps and how they affect light output. These tests are relevant to normal driving conditions.

Filters of any sort only block the wavelength output required to leave the colour wanted. This of course means you lose some of your original output and if you block the yellow (long wavelength) part of the spectrum (Halogen) to get more blue (short wave length) you lose some of the long wavelengths which give you your penetration (distance). ...

This test is relevant for all halogens with blue clip on filters or *blue coated globes. For the test I used a new Osram / FYRLYT - 150 watt 5000 Lumen 12 volt halogen lamp in a Fyrlyt driving light.

A Lightforce crystal blue filter .

A Hella Rally 4000 blue filter (A bit darker blue than the LF crystal)

The numbers are relative lux numbers only for comparison purposes using a light meter at 5 meters

Light only / single clear lens = 1505 = 100% lumen output1/. Second clear filter = 1250 = 83% lumen output2/. Second Crystal Blue filter = 1040 = 69% lumen output3/. Second Hella blue filter = 700 = 47% lumen output

It is notable that even a clear filter costs you 17% due to reflection, refraction and transmission losses and if you colour that filter light blue you lose another 15 % / 17% + 15% = (total loss 31%) or if you go for a darker blue filter you lose 17% + 36% = (total loss 53%) NOTE: Changes in the filter colour will change the percentages.

Now lux at target (light intensity) for a non- parallel beam (conical) will reduce by the inverse square of the distance….. So if you double the distance the light intensity will be 1/ (2^2) = ¼ of that measured at the original distance…. This is simply due to the fact that if you double the size of a circle the area is 4 times the size…… and lux is a measurement of Lumens/unit area (m^2). So when you read light charts from manufacturers you can quickly work out who is telling the truth…. That is if their Lux reading at 400 metres is not ¼ of that at 200 metres…… They are selling a laser as a driving light or it is not a true representation.

As we know light travels by the inverse law so to lose 50% of your output means the original distance will be reduced. EG: if your light shines 400 metres with no filter, it is reduced to approx 300 metres with a dark blue filter.

The blue light will appear brighter due to glare because the rods in your eyes do not process blue light very well and makes it harder to focus on an object plus it will have far less penetration especially in fog and rain due to the dispersion of the blue wavelengths, up to 16 times more than yellow.

*Blue globes behave in the same way when you add colours to them but the 17 % clear lens loss is not included in the losses. I have looked at some lamps and some suppliers of very expensive blue globes (Up to ($80 pair) are quoting better distance and clarity however the same 55watt lamp gives from 1600 lumens down to 1000 lumens as the colour gets darker blue. Makes it difficult to see how you can see further with less light.

The above test using the FYRLYT was also done at 15 metres and also done using a bare lamp only @ 900 mm and achieved similar relative numbers.

So if you want blue the consequences are lower lumen output.

Light out put looks very good but then you got dc to dc step up box from 12volt to 24volt and 150watt globes, result in photo looks impressive but at 24 volt 150watts at 5000lumens they should be good compared to 12 volt 50watt HID and 4500lumens running at 6000k colour one third of the power drawn and no where the amount of heat from the globes but still the light and pattern out put is impressive, then again a 12volt 100wat HID out put 10000 Lumens these could also be very impressive with out the amount of heat so when going slow in the bush the lights do not over heat and get a short life span just my 2 cents worth

FYRLYTs’ response.Fyrlyt has just released its new 150w x 12v 5000 lumen globe so the 24vx12v converter is no longer required.Providing the light is designed to withstand and dissipate the heat generated then there is no problem. These lights have been tested inside closed containers with no airflow other than convection over them. without failing.

As I mentioned in another thread several moths ago to you I had purchased the 100 watt HID in question and fitted it to a FYRLYT. It was a 4300K lamp. As you would expect the intensity in the centre spot is good however I found the blue back glare from this was very annoying especially when I was testing it during the winter months with the damp air. Also the reignition times as you go up in HID output becomes an absolute pain as they take considerably longer than the same in 35wHID. Fine if your the only one on the road and don't have to dip your lights.I also found with the larger lamp envelope and longer arc length the striations of light of different colours going all over the place made for a very poor light beam which you would expect by the curved upward shape (Like an upside down "U") of the arc with its moving around and not ever being at the correct focal point for a parabolic reflector, you can expect nothing less. They are still sitting on the shelf where they will stay.

Personally I would not have them due to above problems and that the lamps are overdriven which can halve the life and that the lamps lose about 10% of their output very rapidly and then settle down to decay by more than 30% over their remaining life.

Below is from my previous reply to you re this 100 watt unit

:I have just purchased and done some tests on an Australian supplied 100watt HID kit. It is advertised as having a current draw of 7.8amps @13.2v = 102.96 watts input from the battery to the ballast. Prior to purchase I asked the vendor if this constant current draw was correct, and was told it was more like 7.3 amps. = 96.36watts input. (The ones supplied to me draw a constant 102.3watts input) I also asked if the lab sphere tests were done in a NATA ( National Association of Testing Authorities) approved lab. The reply was " nobody asks those questions". I then asked do they put out the stated 9,985 lumens, and the reply was " well your eyes can play tricks on you". But I purchased them anyway as I was curious as to the output. When I do my calculations with their stated 80% ballast efficiency I only get 81.84 watts OUTPUT to the lamp and at a lumen output of approx 85L/w I get lamp an output of 6,956Lumens.

At this point I emailed the manufacturer (not the distributor) and asked if the input of my ballasts were correct, " they said it was ". Also I asked the output of the ballast, and was told "75watts".

This gives a ballast conversion of 75% =102.3 x.75% = 76.72 watts x .85L/w =6521Lumens not 9,985L. They would have to be getting 130L/w to put out 9.985Lumens as claimed.

This does not mean someone wont come up with a high output HID that doesn't have these problems but by its very nature it might be a long time coming.

How many lumens? It’s a secret...Shhhh....

How many Lumens?Ask the right questions and get the facts.

HIDAs anybody interested in driving lights knows, there is a large number of HID lights and kits on today’s market. What was almost voodoo technology a few years ago has made its way into Ebay and bargain bin culture. A vast number of HID products from China and Asia have flooded the market with items that range in quality from terrible to reasonable. Cold hard reality these kits and components are sold for as low as $20-30 USD or even cheaper on web sites such as Alibaba. An example is here> You may even spot the product orcomponent you are looking at.

What is inside the HID kit or light you purchased? We believe however that some resellers and worse, driving light companies are misrepresenting the actual performance ratings in either ignorance or marketing ‘hype’ via totally incorrect calculations. The nett result is the same... Customers are spending hard earned money on lights that are clearly misrepresented in lumen output.

FYRLYT believes enthusiasts have a right to know...

NOTE: Most Chinese HID bulbs are in the range of 75/85 lumen/watts compared to German 90 lumen/watts.

35W is approximately 42w input resulting in 35w to lamp with average lumen output of 2800/3200 Lumens50W input x 80% ballast efficiency= 40w to lamp x approx 85 Lumen / watts (China) = 3400 Lumen output70W input x 80% ballast efficiency= 56w to lamp x approx 85 Lumen / watts (China) = 4750 Lumens outputFYRLYT 150W = 5000 Lumens of proven reliable German quality.
