From the reaction and comments I’ve had the new college newsletter seems to have been well received and I know many of you have found it to be a useful way of getting

information and keeping up to date on what’s going on. A lot has happened since the last newsletter and I have been really impressed with the way in which everyone has pulled together to make the new college successful, despite a number of difficulties during the past few months. I have been getting round all of the centres and talking to staff and from this, and my regular meetings with managers, I am aware of most of the issues we have had but more importantly I know that they are only short term difficulties which we will have resolved during the year.

Originally I was going to include thanks for a number of staff for all their hard work, perseverance and for achieving various awards. However as you will see from this and the next newsletter we have won quite a number of awards and there are so many people to thank that the list would have been far too long. As far as possible I have been thanking people individually.

I have now had Principal Question Time meetings with students in every centre (daytime and evenings) and this has been very enlightening in terms of issues students have. Whilst we are all aware of the problems we have had with bus passes, which

we should now almost be on top of, there are quite a number of other issues being raised by students and it is absolutely essential that we all really pay attention to students’ needs. We have had a few issues over the late enrolment of students, particularly 16-18 year olds, and I hope now that everyone is clear that as a college we continue to enrol students and make arrangements for support, induction and catch up for late enrolling students. We certainly should not be turning a students away, which was happening up until a few weeks ago.

It is clear that this year for the first we will not achieve our 16-18 target in terms of student recruitment and although it is frustrating, it is not a surprise. I’m satisfied that we know the reasons for this which are largely in connection with the merger and will be addressed for recruitment next year. It will not present us with a financial difficulty but we do need to ensure that we look after students and retain those students we do have. There will be a further intake of students in January, which will include a number of new courses. We will also be in a position to begin enrolment for next year as from January and will be able to address some issues created through the merger this year in terms of recruitment.

show itself was a resounding success and we will be supporting it for at least the next two years as part of a contractual arrangement. The show attracted somewhere in the region of 100,000 young people, mainly school children, and should give a real boost to their future vocational focus and hopefully enrolment at our college. As part of the arrangement we transported in almost 1,100 students from local schools, many of which we now have close partnership arrangements with. This will almost certainly have a further impact in terms of our enrolment next year

The college will be closing over Christmas as usual and by the end of this week we will let those staff who have to take holiday know how much of their annual leave will need to be taken during the Christmas break. As you will know from the college calendar we break up on Friday 21 December this year and the Christmas party will take place on the evening. The college will close at 2:00pm on that Friday so please ensure that students are aware of the earlier closing time. I will be making my normal end of year talk to all staff on the Thursday and Friday morning.

For the first time, South and City College Birmingham attended the UK’s biggest skills and careers event The Skills Show this month. Over three amazing days at the NEC, the college gave out over 2000 prospectuses, 5000 branded bugs, and spoke to thousands of young people.

The college was part of twelve of the region’s leading further education institutions that were the official FE sponsors of The Skills Show. But unlike the vast majority of other colleges, South and City had a strong presence with not only one but two stands, showcasing just what we offer as a college. The stands were busy throughout the whole event, with

youngsters having a go at activities from hand massages, plumbing, science experiments, performing in front of a green screen, Scalextric, making Christmas tree decorations and more.

Alongside this, the motor vehicle team had a showcase each day where they took to the stage to act out a motorsport race and pit stop, attracting a large crowd each time. Fashion also put on an excellent fashion show on the main stage and catering ran a show demonstration.

South and City College also project managed the building of an entire Eco House at the event – and our students, along with those from five other

colleges, worked hard to build the house in front of a live audience.

Careers advisors and our business services team were on hand to help any young people not sure of what they wanted to do and to guide those on to apprenticeships where suitable.

In its first year, The Skills Show was a huge success with an estimated 100,000 visitors and was widely supported, with visits from the Princess Royal (Princess Anne), Skills Minister Matthew Hancock and Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis to the event.

Over 100 young people from the Handsworth area of Birmingham met inspirational local role models at a careers event to help them get the information, skills and motivation needed for a bright future.

Organised in partnership with Birmingham City Council’s Handsworth and Lozells Community Team at the Handsworth Campus, the event introduced students and local young people to role models such as the Curator at Soho House Museum, the Chief Executive of The Drum, Superintendent of the West Midlands Police Force and a Bishop, along with many others. Despite their differing career paths the role models all had one thing in common; they have achieved success in their chosen fields and many have overcome obstacles along the way. They were on hand to tell their stories to the young people and to offer advice and guidance on how they overcame the odds to achieve success.

Students Aaqib Wahid, 18, and Abdul Hannan, 19, spoke to successful business people and got advice on how to get their business idea off the ground. Aaqib said: “Today has been great. Abdul and I have a business idea, and we’ve got some very helpful advice from the role models who are successful in the business area we are interested in.”

Students feel the heat in Purnell’s Michelin starred kitchenCookery students at the college have spent a day working in the kitchen of Michelin starred Purnell’s restaurant.

The students got the once-in-a lifetime opportunity as part of an 11 week pre-apprenticeship Introduction to Cookery course, which is being run in partnership with local chef Glynn Purnell to help him find two apprentices.

Each student has had the opportunity to spend a day at the chef’s award winning restaurant in Birmingham, which was recently ranked seventeenth best restaurant in the UK. Working with him and his team on lunch and dinner service, the students have been learning the ropes and hoping to make a positive impression getting involved in everything from stirring risotto to pureeing celeriac.

As part of the course, the young learners are also being mentored by the chef who drops in to the college once a week to give advice and techniques to help them succeed in the industry.

Glynn, who was once an apprentice himself will choose two of the budding cooks to become his

apprentices at the end of this year, ready to take on their new roles in January. The remaining students will be able to take apprenticeships at other catering establishments across the city, further their catering qualifications at the college or seek a job with an impressive CV.

SCCB on TVSouth and City College made the news. BBC Midlands Today spent a morning filming the Glynn Purnell apprentice hopefuls at the Bordesley Green training kitchens before moving on to Purnell’s restaurant. The story was shown on the news broadcast across the region, and will soon be available on the college’s Facebook page to watch.

College embarks on a new partnership with National Express – and gets a free coach!

National Express has donated a coach to South and City College Birmingham to mark the launch of a new partnership agreement between the two organisations. The Mercedes coach will be used by the college to take students on trips around the UK and further afar.

As close neighbours in Digbeth, the two organisations have agreed to work more closely together. The college will provide National Express with expert and specialist training along with training to the local community which will enable them to take advantage of employment opportunities within the company. National Express will in return look to offer students at the college valuable work placements, provide mentors to students and a variety of apprenticeship opportunities.

The coach, which was previously used daily and serving much of the National Express national network, was donated thanks to the hard work of the college’s Transport Manager Andrew Williams who first suggested it to the company years ago. The coach has now been rebranded with the college’s vibrant pink and purple branding and is part of the college’s growing fleet of vehicles.

Mike Hopkins said: “We are incredibly grateful for the generous donation of the coach. For many students, college trips present a one-off opportunity to explore other parts of the UK and abroad. We look forward to working more closely with National Express.”

Canteen hygiene given top marks

The Construction Centre canteen has recently received the highest award for hygiene excellence. The canteen was awarded the top score of 5H – the highest that can be achieved.

The Environmental Health Officer noted that there had been improvements this year in Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points and Due Diligence records. She was very impressed with the methods and procedures in place for safe practise and was confident that the staff were following these procedures.

Businesses are benchmarked against the same criteria; compliance with hygiene standards, compliance with structural standards and levels of confidence in the management of the business. Each food business involved in the scheme is awarded a symbol ‘H’ for Hygiene, with the highest award for the best premises being 5 ‘H’s and the lowest 0 ‘H’s.

Students perform Crime and Punishment

To celebrate a year of having a dedicated performance space in the Fusion Centre, students showed off their talents to their parents, guardians, family and friends in an eclectic mix of dance and drama. Scenes from such plays as Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbacker and Orphans by Dennis Kelly (an award winning play and a recent hit at The Birmingham Rep) were included as well as dance routines choreographed to tracks from the musical Chicago and Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer – all addressing the theme of Crime and Punishment.

Students get inspired by professional photographer meet and greet

Photography students have been inspired by a talk from award-winning photographer Mahtab Hussain.

Mahtab, who’s work ‘Building Desires’ photography exhibition exploring British Pakistani Male identity has been on display at the Digbeth campus, talked about his career, the art of portfolio-building, pro-actively seeking out work experience, as well as disclosing a few tricks of the trade.

The event – organised by the Digbeth Mentoring team and Photography tutors – was an opportunity for students to learn first-hand about the hard work required to succeed as a professional photographer. Student mentor Craig Francourt said: “Talking to learners after the event, it was clear that they were inspired by what they had seen. Hopefully, this was the first of many talks with industry professionals to come.”

FE news

The FE campaignA collaboration of leading further education sector organisations launched a new campaign at The Skills Show to promote further education and skills.

The initial six month campaign will celebrate excellence within the sector demonstrate the successes of FE, challenge outdated perceptions and change attitudes towards FE amongst parents, SMEs, potential learners, opinion formers, providers and the FE/skills workforce. Those involved include the Skills Funding Agency, the Association of Colleges, the Association of Employment and Learning Providers, LSIS, NIACE, the 157 Group, UKCES and the National Apprenticeship Service.

Skills Minister launches Chartered Status for FE consultation

On the 20 November the Skills Minister Matthew Hancock launched a consultation for setting out proposals to create chartered status for further education institutions. The proposals aim to enhance the reputation of the sector, demonstrate where and how colleges and training providers are being responsive to the employers and communities in their area, measure and demonstrate increased quality, and help prospective learners and the UK Border Agency recognise legitimate FE Colleges and training providers.

The consultation is open until 16 January 2012, and can be found at www.bis.gov.uk/consultations

New, independent research by the Association of Colleges released to mark Colleges Week, has found that school teachers and parents admit they are struggling to give the right advice to prepare young people for the world of work. The research revealed:

l One fifth of parents (20%) feel out of their depth advising their children about careers, whilst 32% say they only feel comfortable talking about jobs with which they are familiar.

l Nearly one fifth (19%) of parents say they give their child the same jobs and careers advice they received from their parents.

l Some parents readily admit their offspring are ill-prepared for work, with more than one in 10 (11%) confessing they wouldn’t even employ their own child.

l 44% of school teachers admit to giving a pupil bad or uninformed advice in the past.

l 82% of school teachers don’t feel they have the appropriate knowledge to advise pupils on careers.

l 72% of parents think education should be more focused on preparing young people for employment.

l Indeed, 93% of school teachers and 94% of parents want pupils/their child to have more access to employers and businesses.

Joy Mercer, Association of Colleges Director of Policy, said: “In an increasingly difficult jobs market, the results of this study are worrying.  It is vital young people receive suitable guidance so they can make informed decisions about their future.  That includes getting impartial advice on their post 16 education options, and the routes they can take into employment, including apprenticeships.”

What has been your greatest challenge?Teaching for the first time. I remember it like it was yesterday. I have a lot of respect for the profession because whilst stressful it has been the most rewarding experience of my life.

Tell us something interesting about you?My real name is Mahfia! Also, when I was a teenager I appeared in a Bollywood film. They were filming a dance scene on the same floor as my uncle’s wedding. I had to sit at a table and pretend to drink alcohol, even though I was 13!

If your life turned in to a movie what actor would you be?In my dreams it’d be Angelina Jolie (because she’s tall and skinny!) but in reality probably Helena Bonham Carter because she’s a bit odd!

Student turns up the heat at national cookery competition

Student Dharm Chauhan on the NVQ in Professional Cookery Level 3 course at the college has come second in a national cookery competition. The TABASCO Student Street Food Challenge 2012 in Association with the Craft Guild of Chefs was held in London. Competitors had to create a street food dish using Tabasco sauce. They had 1 hour 30 minutes to create a dish to wow the judges. Dharm’s Blackened Shrimp Dossa with Socatas only narrowly missed out on the top spot and was very much enjoyed by the judges. Well done to Dharm and the catering team.

The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) are holding their quarterly meeting at Hall Green Campus on 12 December. IIRSM is a professional membership body that provides recognition, information, support and enhancement for health and safety professionals and specialist members related to the health and safety field.

Equality & Diversity

What do they do?The Community, IAG and School’s TeamWHO ARE WE: We are part of Access to FE and are a team of 11 which include Community, Schools and Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG). We represent the college at events across Birmingham, Solihull and wider areas. Jacqui Maher, Mykal Brown and Sapreena Kumari-Malins head up the teams. There are four of us on the School’s Team; Sabrina Bennet, Maryam Iqbal, Carla Scaroni and Jacqueline Dawson. Our IAG Team are Kevin Whelan, Julie Carey and Bushra Naseem. The Community Team who work alongside us are Aaron Mansfield, Carlton Youngsam, Herman Wilson and Jacqueline Quailey.WHAT WE DO: The Community Team - We recruit 16 - 18 year old NEET’s from the community and are also responsible for initiatives such as the Basketball Academy, and other sports outreach programmes which the college gains funding for.

The Schools Team - We attend all generic events that the college is invited to, as well as creating events to recruit students, organising soft skill events for schools and making sure the college has a good relationship with key decision makers in schools. Did you know that we attended a whopping 112 events from September to November?

The IAG Team - we offer a free alternative to the Connexions service in schools, this includes one to one interviews with action plans, application workshops and CV writing skills. We’ve only been at the college since 1st November and our diaries are fully booked until February!

Promotion of Diversity in the curriculumStaff across the college are working equality and diversity into everything they do.

Claire Scattergood from Access to FE helped her Milestone 5-7 for maths and English students create a display to show how they are all individual but using jigsaw pieces to show how they can come together.

Level 3 tiling students at the Construction Centre have brightened up a corridor with an equality and diversity mural. The learners planned, negotiated tasks, liaised with site

services, chose the materials and colour schemes and created the murals within a time frame.

They certainly have an impact and act as an inspiration to new groups of learners as to what can be achieved in this trade are.

Fire Safety Awareness Training

There are a range of mandatory training modules that all staff must complete on the online training manual. The Fire Safety Awareness Training is to be completed by all staff by the 31 March 2013.

IIRSM regional meeting at Hall Green

Our plans to reduce our carbon fall into two categories:

Good housekeeping improving the way that we use our buildings and optimising our energy usage, including changing staff and student behaviour.

Invest-to-save projects such as lighting replacement with high efficiency alternatives, improving insulation, replacing fuel sources with alternatives with a lower carbon footprint and more.

South and City College is now a member of the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC), a not-for-profit charity with a membership of over 300 universities and colleges, supporting sustainability within the UK tertiary education sector. South and City College Birmingham will reduce

the carbon emissions from its activities by 30%, from a

2009/2010 baseline of 3,838 tonnes CO2, by 2016.

Our Carbon Vision

Thinking Greener is our sustainability awareness campaign to help us achieve our carbon reduction goals and we need everyone to get involved. You will see and hear more about Thinking Greener in the coming months.

Did you knowthat our Fordrough building at Bordesley Green Campus and our Tyseley Campus both have systems that harvest rainwater

which is then used for “greywater” use such as flushing toilets to help

us save clean water.
