WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT THEM?
I have been fortunate. Most of us have been fortunate, but for the people who have had a fire at their home, their business, a church, a school, the loss can be difficult to handle.
However, in so many cases, homes, businesses, churches and schools are saved from total devastation by the men and women of our local fire departments. Truth be told, I’ve always taken for granted they’d be there if the need arose. That the EMS or Police would come if I ever needed them, but until the end of last month, I had no idea how difficult, stressful and rewarding it is being a firefighter.
Having participated in the Conroe Fire Department’s “Fire Ops 101,” I had a glimpse into the world of firefighting. After I caught my breath, relieved my sore muscles and replenished my fluids, I have found a new, deep respect for these folks and what they do every day. It’s not just fighting fires; it’s the preparation, the training, the teamwork, the communications, the tradition. It’s a calling that came through loud and clear as we had the chance to walk side by side with some of Conroe’s firefighters. So, I tip my hat to Lloyd Sandefer with the Conroe Professional Fire Fighters Association and Chief Ken Kreger for letting me be a part of such an amazing day!
As businesspeople, we tend to focus on our area of expertise like running the business, selling for the business, producing for the business, manufacturing for the business. But all it takes in one careless “event” and your company may be out of business. It’s good to know that our community has experienced professionals capable of assessing and acting when things get out of control.
Since November is our month to give thanks, stop and thank a firefighter, a police officer, an EMS technician, because when you need them most they’re usually right around the corner!
I want to take a moment to wish each of you a very Happy Thanksgiving. We at the Chamber are thankful for YOU, our members and for the involvement in the organization as well as the Conroe/Lake Conroe area.

LEARNS ABOUT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY
The Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2017 recently explored economic development in the county at their Economic Development Session. Wiesner45 Years in the Making
John Wiesner was born in Richmond, Texas, and attended Hempstead High School, where he met his wife, the late Elizabeth Sorsby. The couple graduated from Southern Methodist University after marrying their sophomore years and raised three sons.
Wiesner began his career as a salesman for his father-in-law at Sorsby Chevrolet in Hempstead. After working in all areas of the dealership, he bought the business. He then purchased the Chevrolet franchise in Baytown, Texas. In 1972, Wiesner acquired the Buick Pontiac GMC franchise in Conroe,
Texas and John Wiesner, Inc. was born. The company began with 10 employees, three of whom quit in the first week, to at one point having more than 500 employees, with multiple locations.
In 1984, the company moved to 1645 I-45 North, the flagship location, in Conroe. Wiesner added the Hyundai franchise and later opened Conroe Collision Center in 1988. The Huntsville dealership opened in 1994 and the Chevrolet franchise was acquired soon after. Wiesner purchased Tomball Dodge, as well as Wiesner Dodge Rosenberg, Wiesner Chevrolet Oldsmobile Rosenberg and Wiesner Pontiac Cadillac GMC Rosenberg in 1997, all of which were sold in the early 2000s.
The Wiesner name is synonymous with loyalty and excellence. Workforce retention has always been important to Wiesner, and a dozen of his employees have worked for him since the ‘70s and ’80s. The organization’s high expectations are evident in its significant accomplishments, which include: No. 1 GMC Retail Suburban Sales in Nation, 1990-94; No. 1 GMC Retail Sierra Sales in Nation, 1991-96; No. 1 GMC Total Retail Sales in Texas for eight years, No. 2 GMC Total Retail Sales in Nation for five years, Houston Business Journal’s No. 8 Family Owned Business of Top 50 in Houston; Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award, 1997, Texas Automotive Dealers Association’s Key Award Outstanding Director, 1998-99 and General Motors’ Mark of Excellence Award. Wiesner was president of the Texas Gulf Coast Pontiac Dealers, the GMC Truck Dealers Advertising Associations and served on the National Dealer Council for General Motors.
Wiesner believes in giving back to the community and is a proponent of development and progress for Montgomery and surrounding counties. He served on many boards and was vital in establishing the Lone Star College System in Montgomery County. Wiesner chaired the committee that created North

Harris Montgomery Community College District in 1991 and continues to serve on its Foundation Board. He also served as chairman for Lake Conroe and The Woodlands Chambers, Montgomery County Appraisal District, Conroe Regional Medical Center Hospital and is on the Board of Directors for the Conroe Symphony Orchestra.
Wiesner’s son, Don Edd, became Dealer in 2014 and proudly continues the family legacy. He operates the company with the same principles and values upon which it was founded. John Wiesner’s visionary business approach, appreciation for and dedication to his employees and customers, and commitment to his community has led to John Wiesner, Inc.’s longevity. The company’s strong foundation will continue its trajectory of growth, helping it to face the challenges that lie ahead in this exciting, dynamic industry.

The Chamber's Next Generation Leadership Students Challenged to Get Out and Vote
The October Next Generation Leadership session focused on voting as a key element of civic engagement. Dr. Heather Evans from Sam Houston State University shared her research on understanding the motivating factors behind political participation. She even offered samples of races where a handful of votes decided the outcome of races. Overall, her message to students was they have a role to play in choosing what happens in their community and that can start in the voting booth.
Also in October, Chad Patterson, a certified John Maxwell Leadership Speaker, Teacher and Coach offered the first installment of YouthMax training. YouthMax is a youth leadership training series designed to help young people grow and develop to meet the challenges of life in today’s changing world. Patterson demonstrated how everyone benefits when leaders lift others up.
A key element of the Next Generation Leadership program is also practicing leadership skills through two group service projects during the year. The class voted to volunteer at an upcoming Christmas party for young people in foster care. Thanks to Consolidated Communications for hosting lunch at the Civic Engagement session.
Chamber members are invited to participate in the November 9 NGL session on business etiquette. Volunteers are needed to conduct mock interviews during the lunchtime session. Please contact Monica at [email protected] if you are willing to participate.
Next Generation Leadership is a partnership between the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce and Education for Tomorrow Alliance. The monthly speaker series is designed to demonstrate to students leadership at work in Montgomery County. Thanks to First Financial Bank for sponsoring the Next Generation Leadership program.
Special thank you to our Next Generation Leadership 2016-2017 program sponsor,
