Thank you so much to all who participated in the many Catholic Schools Week events, especially our Faith Rally. It was a beautiful day to focus on the reason for our school’s existence: to bring Christ to children and children to Christ. As with so much that we do here, we could not have had such a beautiful week-long celebration of our faith without our volunteers at the Open House and Pancake Breakfast, at the Book Fair, and at the Faith Rally. It was all made possible because of you.

Week events, especially our Faith Rally. It was a beautiful day to focus

on the reason for our school’s existence: to bring Christ to children and

children to Christ. As with so much that we do here, we could not have

had such a beautiful week-long celebration of our faith without our

    Artist of the Week

    by Mrs. Fioritto

This week's awesome artist is Nicole Ochs

in 7th grade! The 7th graders' weekly

sketchbook assignment was to illustrate a

scene from a favorite book, in honor of "I

Love to Read Month". Many students

chose books that they loved as younger

children, or that their parents read to

them. Nicole did a great job of illustrating

    a heartwarming story of a mother's love

for her son being returned to her in old

age. Her use of color, detail, and expres-

sion makes for an eye-catching drawing

that makes us want to read the whole

story again! Beautiful work, Nicole! And,

check out some other examples decorat-

ing the art room door during the month of

    February!

Math Counts for SCCS Math Team Member

Nicholas Johnson recently participated in the MathCounts Re-

gional Middle School Math Competition, Of 103 students,

Nicholas placed 3rd! What an amazing accomplishment He

will now advance to the state competition on March 16.

Best of Luck to you, Nick!

Seventh Grade Science Fair by Ms. Anderson, Middle School Science

The Value of a St. Croix Catholic School Education

With the celebration of our Catholic faith and our Catholic school last week, many families and SCCS staff members

shared their thoughts on the value of our mission at St. Croix Catholic School. In the past weeks, we have heard from

many SCCS parents with testimonials about their experience at SCCS. These have been so powerful and moving that

we wanted to share some of them over the upcoming weeks:

by Patrick and Luba Thueson, Parents of Sam (2010), Nina (8th grade), and Bobby (5th grade)

Our family’s experience at SCCS has given us confidence that keeping our kids at SCCS through 8th grade graduation

was the best possible decision for our children. Kids today get bombarded with millions of sometimes disturbing imag-

es, encouraging them to lower their standards both spiritually and intellectually. These influences really ramp-up in the

    middle school age group.

While parents are most directly responsible for their child reaching their God-given potential, it has been a great com-

fort to have a community of allies to even-out the influences a bit. The teachers, other parents, and classmates at

SCCS middle school have given our children a deep appreciation for excellence, a joyful attitude, and a spiritual

grounding that positions them to thrive at future schools and beyond. In middle school, SCCS students go from being

great kids, to being great kids and great leaders. We would invite parents who are considering SCCS middle school to

check out the facts and talk to parents of graduates. There’s a quantifiable history of SCCS graduates taking the confi-

dence of being 8th grade school leaders into their next school and achieving amazing things. SCCS 8th grade gradu-

ates are disproportionately represented on honor rolls, special honor rolls, high school sports teams, fine arts groups,

and as valedictorians of their next school. There are good education options in Stillwater. But our experiences both in

the middle school years and the subsequent years have given us great peace of mind in our decision. It’s been a won-

derful investment in our kids’ futures, for which we are grateful.

Traditionally, SCCS 7th grade students have created a

Science Fair project during the 2nd trimester of the

school year. The Science Fair was different this year

in many ways – mainly, my hope was that having

judges come would raise the standard a bit and help

students understand the universality of science, in that

the scientific method is the language that all scientists

speak. Students had to DESIGN their own projects

according to the constraints of their materials and

their question, and many had to utilize technology

they had never used before – like an air compressor!

I’m sure everybody noticed the process of creating a

project was different this year. The purpose of that

was for students to take more ownership of their pro-

jects. My hope for the coming years is that our stu-

dents will be able to participate in the regional and

state science fair. Thank you to all the parents who

helped make our fair a success!

Science Fair distinguished participants: left to right

LaFavor - Honorable Mention; Nick Gag - Third Place; Noah

    Get Kids Powered Up

    Kids Health Fair

Sponsored by St. Michael’s Wellness Committee

    Saturday, February, 23rd 9:00 - 11:30 AM St. Michael’s Social Hall

In conjunction with the PowerUp School Challenge at St. Croix Catholic

School, the Wellness Committee is hosting a health fair for elementary

kids. It will be a fun morning for kids and parents to learn ways to ener-

gize their family by eating more fruits and veggies and staying active

even during these cold days of winter. Lakeview Hospital, the Red Cross,

Police and Fire, Public Health, Parks and Recreation, and Cub Foods will be some of the organizations here to share

some great information related to kids. 45 Degrees will provide kids with an opportunity to try out snowshoeing on

the front lawn. Chef Paul Mahoney will demo some kid friendly cooking ideas. It should be a great morning and we

    hope you will stop in.

    Box Tops for Education

    by BoxTops Coordinator, Anne Tomek

SCCS received a check for $1,454.30 last month from

our first submission of the school year of Box Tops for

Education! Our top classroom earners were: Mrs. Gag

    - $169.00, Middle School - $160.50, Sr. Perpetua -

$139.70, and Mrs. Berry - $138.40. This money goes

directly to your child's classroom (or the whole middle

school) to be used by their teacher in any way to

    enrich their classroom!

As you can see, these Box Tops add up quickly. The

2nd submission of Box Tops for this school year is due

at the end of this month and I will be collecting them

at the end of next week so please gather any you

have on hand and send them in with your children as

soon as possible so they can be included in this last

submission for the school year. Once again I thank

you for participating in this easy, painless fundraiser,

and for being a Box Top Supporter!

    Catholic Book Fair

A huge thank you to all the parents and staff who

have helped make our first annual Catholic Book Fair a

success. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

We are very pleased with the amount of sales but

more importantly, our children and families seemed to

really enjoy the selection of books and gifts. The

whole experience was very honoring to our faith and

this made it very special. We look forward to this be-

ing the first of many to come.

Watch for Your SCRIP Rebate Update to

    Come Home This Week

If you are buying SCRIP to meet your $225 family

SCRIP commitment for the 2012-2013 school year,

watch for your quarterly statement to come home with

your youngest child at SCCS this week. Each family is

expected to either earn $225 in SCRIP rebates by buy-

ing SCRIP gift cards or to pay an additional $225 of

tuition per family. You have until April 30 to reach

    $225 in rebates.

If you are not able to reach the $225 in rebates, you

will be billed for the difference after May 1. Many fami-

lies have already reached or far exceeded the $225

SCRIP expectation. Your $225 will be credited and we

greatly appreciate your continued support of SCCS. If

you have questions about your SCRIP rebate amount,

please contact Diane Polley at [email protected].
