CHATTER ON THE BOX With Nathan Taylor

I t’s been yet another massive week in the world of TV, so here’s a run down of what’s got people talking…

‘Big Brother’ narrator and fan favourite, Mike Goldman, is returning to the revived reality series, which hits Channel Nine after the Olympics. As well as narrating the daily show since the show’s debut in 2001, Goldman also hosted ‘Up-Late’ and the fun ‘Friday Night Live Games’. It’s understood the popular host will continue as the show’s narrator and will front the ‘Up-Late’ edition weeknights on GO!

A big congratulations to all the couples who featured on this year’s series of ‘The Block’. This season was one of the most successful ever, not only due to strong ratings but having all four properties sell for a massive profi t. The fi nale pulled in 2.71 million viewers for Nine, which will no doubt make it the week’s highest rating program after Origin III. One thing I was a bit disappointed about was the announcement of ‘The Block All-Stars’ edition for 2013. Does this mean returning couples can still compete to take home more cash or will profi ts this time go to charity? Time will tell.

The ‘W’ channel on Foxtel is set to be replaced by new channel, ‘SoHo’. The new premium drama channel is expected to stay on the basic package. The channel is set to feature the new Jeff Daniels drama ‘The Newsroom’, as well as classic HBO titles ‘Boardwalk Empire’, ‘True Blood’ and ‘The Sopranos’.

‘Australia’s Got Talent’ are hoping a kid by the name of Justin Bieber will help them pull in big numbers for the show’s fi nal episode in a fortnight. Bieber has been booked by Seven to perform two of his big hits. Catch Bieber performing on the July 18 episode of ‘AGT’.

In what came as a shock this week, long-running entertainment program ‘Entertainment Tonight’ has been given the axe by Nine. The always informative and trusted Hollywood-based program has been on Aussie screens for an amazing 30 years but with Nine’s contract for ‘ET’ expiring this week, the network has decided to replace it with another US showbiz series called ‘Extra’. However, in some good news for ‘ET’ fans, the show will continue to be screened daily on Foxtel channel ARENA.

Who remembers the old Channel Seven travel series ‘The Great Outdoors’? Well, the program is set to get a revival by the network. Seven will fi lm eight episodes with hottie Rachael Finch and ladies favourite Tom Williams to front the series. The show was axed by Seven in 2009 but will return this time to concentrate on outback Australia and their towns. Country singer Adam Brand will also have a role on the show.

Lastly, everyone’s favourite Apple/Android game, ‘Draw Something’, is set to be turned into an American game show by Ryan Seacrest and his production team. CBS in America has commissioned a series that will feature teams of celebrities and everyday people who will test their skills in front of a studio audience to earn money and big laughs. Viewers can play along at home and win prizes along the way. The ‘American Idol’ frontman will not be hosting the show and no celebrities have been attached to the program as yet. I hope Aussie networks pick up on this fantastic idea!
