HOW REALITY TVCHANGED CHRISTINE

Christine Anu will bring ‘Rewind – The Aretha Franklin Songbook’ to Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, June 1 at 8pm. Tickets are $41.To book or for more infor-mation call 9625 5500 or visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

too. “My manager’s trying to coach me

through social media and be hip and up on it,” Christine said.

“Thankfully, I’ve got my two children as tutors, because without them I’d be totally lost.”

‘My Island Home’ may have propelled Christine Anu into the annals of Australian music history, but Christine is so much more than that. She is also a highly successful businesswoman.

Her business, Stylin Up Entertainment, has developed the brands Chrissy’s Island Family, Ladies Of Jazz, and Women Of Soul.

Away from the recording studio, Christine has carved out a notable stage, TV and ! lm career with a staple of widely acclaimed appearances and production headliners including ‘The Sapphires’, ‘Little Shop Of Horrors’, ‘Dating The Enemy’, ‘Matrix Reloaded’, ‘Moulin Rouge’, ‘Wildside’, ‘East West 101’, ‘The Alice’, ‘Play School’, ‘Rainbow’s End’ and ‘Rent’.

Now, Christine’s focus is on one of her biggest musical in" uences, Aretha Franklin.

In her new tour, ‘Rewind – The Aretha Franklin Songbook’, Christine conjures soulful interpretations of

Franklin’s most memorable songs, including ‘Respect’, ‘A Natural Woman’, ‘Chain of Fools’ and ‘Today I Sing the Blues’. Coincidentally, Christine’s tour coincides with Franklin’s 70th birthday year.

“Nobody says it or sings it better than Aretha Franklin,” she said.

“I truly believe she is the greatest soul singer of our time.”

Those people who have followed Christine’s career may be in for a bit of a shock, too.

“My sound is completely different,” she said. “I have found something inside me that even I didn’t realise existed. There is just something about Aretha’s music that makes you want to tell a story, from the pit of your stomach. I think people will be surprised.”

Christine will be joined on the tour by Women of Soul, starring Miss Min and Evie J Willie.

T here is something vastly different about the Christine Anu of today compared with the young

woman I interviewed in the mid ‘90s on the back of her hit song ‘My Island Home’.

Whether it’s maturity, motherhood, experience, or the fact she’s getting a good dose of vitamin D nowadays, Christine has grown.

“I had a blood test recently and it came back that I was de! cient in vitamin D,” Christine said.

“Apparently it’s a common de! ciency because we’re all in of! ces, we walk out of the house, get in the car, drive to a car park, get out and sit in an of! ce all day.

“I’m getting back to the outdoors and loving it.”

For the uninitiated, Christine is arguably Australia’s most successful indigenous performer and one of Australia’s most popular recording artists – backed by an award-winning repertoire spanning across music, theatre, dance, ! lm, television and children’s entertainment.

Her illustrious career spanning two decades has involved platinum albums, sell-out musicals, Hollywood blockbusters and high-pro! le collaborations with showbiz and musical luminaries such as Baz Luhrmann, Paul Kelly and David Atkins.

But there is a renewed glow about Christine. She looks ! t. She sounds con! dent. And she’s ready to open some eyes with her latest show in honour of the undisputed queen of soul, Aretha Franklin.

There have been some big changes in Christine’s outlook in the past few years. She’s taking risks and putting herself out there.

The day after this interview she was going to dive with the sharks at Manly’s Ocean World.

Why? “Why not?” she said.“I did a show called ‘Excess

Baggage’ (a celebrity weight loss television series) and discovered I’d stopped living my life. Not just getting outdoors. I mean, I really stopped living my life, period.

“I got so much stimulation from all directions that I realised that I needed a bit of renovation in my headspace so that I could continue to provide myself interest, to look forward to something.

“I’ve now jumped out of a plane, abseiled 140 metres down a cliff, been caving and now diving with the sharks.”

Christine said ‘Excess Baggage’ made her realise that her creativity was about to disappear and she needed to do something before it did.

“I just didn’t know when I stopped living my life, for me,” she said.

“Getting the passion back in my life was important. How you feel inside affects creativity or lack thereof. Not feeling inspired affected my work and it was sti" ing my creative side or my want.

“I had to keep my music vital and alive. I just needed to reshape my thinking and from that moment I started to see massive changes in myself.

“I was still a piece of clay that I could mould to whatever shape I wanted. I was so happy that I wasn’t broke and un! xable.

“As soon as I started to feel that, it was, ‘right, get me out, get me doing something’.”

As part of her invigoration, Christine has been spending time with her children, Kuiam and Zipporah, and learning a couple of things from them

ARTWORK HAS A PERSONAL MEANINGA boriginal people refer to country as our

mother and that our spiritual connection to our mother enables us to heal

ourselves. The exhibition titled ‘Portrait of our Mother’ is

a re! ection of how important the landscape is to Aboriginal artist, Jake Soewardie, both personally and in his art practice.

His valued landscapes are a re! ection of traditional Aboriginal culture: the belief that all life encompassing man, animals, " sh and birds are parts of an interconnecting stream of relationships that originate and return to the Great Spirits of our ancestors.

Jake, a Kamilaroi man, was born in Redfern in Sydney in 1948 and is a survivor of the Stolen Children Generation. Jake was taken from his family at the age of three and placed with other Aboriginal children in an institution, until his grandmother rescued him.

Jake is a versatile artist and his palettes often hold oil paints, acrylics, and charcoal and oil pastels.

After years of studying Fine Arts at Western Sydney TAFE, Jake now uses his knowledge and natural talent to educate Aboriginal youth about their culture, as well as teaching both young and adult men how to paint so that they can tell their own story.

“Too many times I’ve been asked why I paint

in a western style, it is almost as if you lose your identity. It’s because of my western upbringing in the homes, and also being pigeon-holed as an Aboriginal artist has given me strength to document my journey on canvas,” he said.

Zona Wilkinson, Curator of Aboriginal Programs at Penrith Regional Gallery, explained why Jake’s works were a must see.

“Jake’s ability to paint from memory is incredible, so too is his use of colour and texture,” she said.

‘Portrait of our Mother’ is now on display at the Penrith Regional Gallery until Sunday, June 3.

CHANCE TO TESTYOUR KNOWLEDGEE veryone loves testing their knowledge

with their friends, so why not make a night of it and head over to

Kingswood Sports Club this Monday, May 28 to partake in a Trivia Fun Night.

The Trivia Night has been put together by the Lions Club of Cambridge Park, with proceeds from the evening going towards the Nepean and Blue Mountains Prostate Cancer Support Group.

No expense has been spared to make this a great night. With an international line-up of masterminds, high-end MENSA members, Masters of the Institute of Higher Learning in Useless Information and of course Kindergarten dropouts all in attendance – everyone is sure to have a lot of fun.

To give everyone a fair chance, some questions will come complete with multiple-choice answers to help strugglers and give everyone a 33.33 per cent chance of being correct some of the time. To be totally fair, the quizmaster is 100 per cent corruptible and can be bought for a gold coin donation – conditions apply.

Event organiser, Alan Bideleux, said it’s important that plenty of people take advantage of the fun night because not only

will they have a good time but they’ll also be helping out a serious cause.

“As a recovering prostate cancer victim myself, I can vouch for the great work these people (Nepean and Blue Mountains Prostate Cancer Support Group) do locally for sufferers of the dreaded disease,” he said.

“The Lions Club of Cambridge Park are delighted to be able to put on a night in support.”

So get a team together, study hard and head out to the Kingswood Sports Club on Monday, May 28 from 6.30pm for a night of trivia madness.

There will be some surprises on the night too, as well as raf! es and lucky door prizes for those who need another door.

Entry into the Trivia evening is $12 per person.

To book your group call Alan on 0409 220 544.

NOT QUITE FLYINGMovie-cum-musical hits the stage, but doesn’t quite hit the right notes

You won’t be humming any of the songs as you walk out of the theatre, except perhaps for ‘If You Believe In Love The Way I Do’ and the popular ‘Up Where We Belong’.

Harrison is a well-known and talented performer, best known for ‘Wicked’ and is amongst the highlights here, along with Bert Labonte who makes for a fantastic Sargeant Foley.

All in all, ‘An Of! cer and a Gentleman’ isn’t a terrible show, but it’s not a great one either. It needs some more wind beneath its wings.

- Troy Dodds

F or years, popular movies have been turned into musicals, with classic stories adapted to the stage with varying degrees

of success.Turning the classic ! lm ‘An Of! cer and a

Gentleman’ into a musical was always going to be a risky move. It doesn’t quite have “musical” written all over it, after all.

The world premiere Sydney production is a passable effort, though certainly doesn’t leave you with a whole heap of hope that it’d make it on the bigger stages of Broadway or London.

There’s just something that doesn’t quite work here, and it’s hard to put your ! nger on, though the lack of chemistry between factory girl Paula (Amanda Harrison) and jet pilot in training Zack (Ben Mingay) is unfortunately obvious.

Unique creation shows off artistic ! air of western Sydney artists

Two of the best combine for massive show at Homebush this weekend

T hree Strike (///) Projects is the creation of Sydney College of Arts students Luke Burcher and James Cooney. Their

aim is to organise artistic projects showcasing emerging visual artists and musicians from Sydney’s west and inner-west.

The pair wanted to make sure that the art of their peers did not go unnoticed and in-turn came up with this unique concept.

The exhibition, which is currently on display inside a disused warehouse in Sydney, is part of ‘The Rocks Pop-Up’, an initiative of the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority to " nd creative uses for temporarily vacant buildings.

With limited galleries to exhibit in Sydney, the idea behind /// is to curate exhibitions in makeshift spaces around the city, as well as

providing artists with an opportunity to explore different ways in which their work can be displayed.

Without giving too much away, you can expect to see this philosophy adopted in the " rst /// showcase.

Luke, who is from Cranebrook, and James will be exhibiting their works along with other western Sydney artists including Nathan Howard, Ben Lang and Hannah Fenton, all of whom are promising young talents.

/// Projects is currently displaying their debut exhibition at a disused warehouse upstairs at 47 George Street, Sydney – just metres away from the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The exhibition runs until Monday, June 4 and entry is free.

T wo of the world’s biggest pop bands are joining forces for the ultimate concert experience.

‘80s boy band New Kids On The Block and ‘90s megastars the Backstreet Boys have now become one and will rock Allphones Arena together this Saturday, May 26.

The Australian leg will bring the historic NKOTBSB tour for a limited six-show run, giving fans across the country the chance to catch their favourite groups on one stage.

New Kids’ member Donnie Wahlberg said it was time him and his group showed Australia some love.

“If our fans want us down under, we’ll go down under,” he said.

“Our international fans have been ! ying

to see us stateside for years, so now we are bringing the show to them. Get ready Australia, we are coming to you!”

NKOTBSB " rst shocked and delighted fans when they took to the stage together for a medley at the sold out NKOTB New York City show. The two groups then wowed audiences again at the 2010 American Music Awards and have toured consistently through 2011 since coming together.

With more than 200 million albums sold between both bands, and smash hit after smash hit, these two pop sensations have dominated the music scene for more than three decades.

Aiming to please, these guys are giving concert-goers and diehard fans everywhere the ultimate ‘night out’ experience.

NKOTBSB perform live at Allphones Arena, Sydney Olympic Park this Saturday, May 26 at 7.30pm. Tickets start at $99.90.

CHATTER ON THE BOX With Nathan Taylor

W elcome TV lovers to the ! rst ever ‘Chatter on the Box’ column! Each week I’ll be watching as much TV as

humanly possible so I can then tell you what to watch and what not to watch.

I’ll also provide you with the latest local and international television news, gossip and ratings data. So grab some popcorn, sit back and relax and enjoy ‘Chatter on the Box’…

So let’s get off to a positive start and I must say I’m really enjoying Channel 7’s new mythical drama ‘Once Upon A Time’. The show, which see’s classic fairytale characters living in a modern world, is a little bit tricky to get your

head around at ! rst but once you get the gist of how everything is playing out it is thoroughly enjoyable. Catch your favourite storybook characters Tuesdays at 7.30pm.

If you’re a fan of ‘The Amazing Race’ then make sure you look out for the Australian version that hits our screens this Wednesday, May 30 on Channel 7. Eleven teams of racers will travel more than 65,000 kilometres across four continents in the long-awaited second season of the hit reality show, hosted by Grant Bowler. This season includes some international ! rsts including never before seen destinations, Must Vote U-Turns and

a controversial new Salvage Pass on the ! rst leg of the Race.

There’s some great news for ‘news junkies’

with Channel 10 set to unleash ‘Ten Newsnight’ hosted by the likeable and professional Hamish Macdonald. At just 31, Hamish has won a swag of big journalism awards during his short career and Ten think he’s the perfect man to front their new late night news hour. The 45-minute show will feature news, interviews, music performances, social media trends, weather, ! nance and the return of ‘Sports Tonight’. Catch it 10.30pm weeknights from June 4.

I must say I’m a huge fan of Channel 9’s ‘The Voice’ but ever since they hit the live shows last week I think it’s lost a lot of its individuality that it had in the earlier rounds. The Blind Auditions and The Battle Rounds were fantastic and offered an element to this TV genre that we’d never seen before, but now with these Live Shows, it just looks like another version of ‘X Factor’ or ‘Idol’.

Bad news for fans of the following shows because they’ve just been axed in the US: ‘Alcatraz’, ‘CSI: Miami’, ‘Breakout Kings’, ‘Flashpoint’, ‘Missing’, ‘Harry’s Law’, ‘Ringer’, ‘The River’, ‘Unforgettable’ and ‘A Gifted Man’.
