Dear Warriors,The power of philanthropy is realized in many ways, but none more impactful than providing equitable access to higher education for all. In today’s world, students need both financial support and relevant learning environments in order to be successful, but that’s not all. The defining marks of a quality student experience also include access to advanced technology, outstanding programming, and state-of-the-art facilities.

With that in mind, Winona State University and the WSU Foundation continue to embrace meaningful opportunities associated with meeting the needs of today’s students. We have been purposeful over the course of the past year in establishing fundraising priorities to assist the University in strategic initiatives. These include enhancing our athletic and academic facilities, and supporting the extraordinary development of experiential learning opportunities necessary to equip our remarkable students with the tools they need to live out our mission of improving our world.

Your Foundation’s Trustees are taking action because the time has come to take greater strides – not just towards affordable accessibility of higher education, but towards our continued rightful place as a leader in today’s competitive higher education marketplace. Equipped with the knowledge and discoveries of the past 160 years, we must be poised to compete with other institutions that are also stretching the boundaries in many of these same areas.

Within the past several months, the Winona State University Foundation has launched several mini-campaigns to raise the necessary capital to support priorities identified by the University. The pursuit of these fundraising goals will help all of us associated with Winona State as we continue to raise our profile and position ourselves above the rest – as the premier institution of higher education in the region.

The mini-campaigns are fueled by a simple question: “What else could we be doing if we dare ask for the help to do it?” We could invest in a modernized discovery center for simulated learning, a state-of-the-art center for art and design, invaluable experiential learning opportunities in the business world, and world-class athletic facilities — all of which will allow us to share and collaborate at a higher level with our greater community. And in turn, we will continue to build our capacity at Winona State to serve the needs of our community even more effectively than we have ever done before.

With that, I’m writing to say thank you for your ongoing support of Winona State University. Your philanthropic spirit helps inspire all of us to foster a new level of educational programming in an environment that competes with private institutions, while providing a student experience unable to be replicated elsewhere.

The Winona State University Foundation is always finding ways to take what Winona State is doing well and make it even better. Right now, the Foundation is working on several long-term goals what will have lasting effects on students, staff and the rest of the Winona and Rochester communities.

For Winona State’s art department, there’s a brand-new space on the horizon. The Laird Norton Center for Art and Design will provide a new, innovative space to create and display art, complete with 21st-century creative technology and state-of-the-art galleries. The new space will have a Fab Lab and a Makerspace, which will be available for students - as well as local artists - to create art, or even new products of their own design. It will also fit right into the Winona Arts District, connecting students with the artistic hub of the city. Learn more about this initiative on pages 6–7.

College of Business students can look forward to exciting new learning opportunities through the College of Business Engaged Learning Endowment. The endowment will power programming that takes students outside the classroom, out into the real working world. Students will tackle real-world projects, side-by-side with Winona State’s external business partners, so they can get the experience they need to impress potential employers. Learn more about the endowment on pages 4–5.

Students will also be able to get hands-on experiences at the planned WSU-Rochester Discovery Center for Simulated Learning. The facilities will include a boardroom fully equipped with cameras and microphones, perfect for students in the College of Business. Graduate nursing students will be able to use the center’s various rooms modeled after hospitals and homes, as well as its data centers. There will also be family therapy space, where counseling and nursing students can train with standardized actors to simulate real therapy scenarios.

“These spaces are essential to the human engagement work that our high-quality faculty and students have delivered for over 100 years in Rochester,” Jeanine Gangeness, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, said.

The Winona State University stadium has been the nexus of fun and excitement for many a Homecoming game, but it’s in severe need of an update. The stadium was built in the 1930s, and hasn’t been renovated since the 1970s. The updated stadium will improve the experience in almost every way, from the seating to the scoreboard.

Athletes and student fans aren’t the only ones who will benefit from the upgrade. It will also give the community a chance to get more involved in Winona State’s athletics. Tom Wynn, former president and CEO of Winona’s Peerless Industrial Group and immediate past president of the WSU Warriors Club, believes the updated stadium will bring the Winona community closer to the University.

“A lot of members of our community, although they live in Winona, don’t really have a connection to Winona State,” he said. “If we have first-class facilities to give them a really good game day environment and game day experience, they’re going to come with their kids and their grandkids just to enjoy being at a game.”

The world of business is always changing. That’s why Winona State University’s College of Business, AACSB accredited for its high-quality business education, has been striving to create the next generation of business leaders.

To teach and prepare such leaders, Dr. Hamid Akbari, dean of the College of Business, and faculty members have adopted a new strategic vision for becoming a distinct college of business for innovative and engaged teaching and learning – as captured by the college’s new brand tagline CREATE YOUR MORE. Part of that vision includes pairing students with Winona State’s external business partners to give students the edge more and more employers are

looking for — actual business experience.

In order to build these experiences, Winona State is calling on its supporters and friends to create the College of Business Engaged Learning Endowment. The goal: to give students, faculty, alumni and businesses real-life opportunities to collaborate with and benefit from one another.

“In a nutshell, the endowment will provide opportunities to explore innovative, mutually beneficial ways to connect businesses to students through experience,” Director of Development Debbie Block said. “Supplementing academic experience with real-world application allows students to hone critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills; the skills employers say need strengthening.”

“Having a substantial endowed fund is an absolute necessity in order to offer the types of engaged learning experiences students and businesses of today are looking for,” Akbari said. “And through such experiences, we have the opportunity to not only make a significant impact on our students, but on our campus, in our community and across the globe.”

The fact is, making the leap between the classroom and the workplace can be a complicated transition. According to Winona State Associate Professor in Business Administration/Human Resources Jana Craft, more and more employers are looking for candidates with real-world experience on top of their academic qualifications.

“Classroom learning doesn’t cut it anymore,” she said. “It’s almost a necessity now to include opportunities outside the classroom that engage with the community.”

Not to mention it’s a selling point for the University itself, according to Block.

On top of all that, students love what they get out of engaged learning opportunities.

“I think engaged learning is important because the classroom is simply not enough,” Anacorina Velasco '16 said. Over the past few years, she said, she’s seen the Winona State College of Business ramp up in a major way. She’s had several opportunities to connect the skills she’s learned in class to real-world situations and organizations. She’s proud to say she’s a graduate of the program, and of what she continues to accomplish.

“I think that engaged learning is going to help me develop who I’m going to be in the next five, 10 years of my life,” she said.

As of November, during the initial fundraising phase, the generosity of donors had put the endowment $365,000 closer to its $1 million goal. Among those donors, several business and other partners have climbed aboard for the chance to participate. The Winona National Bank Financial Markets Lab, the Strauss Center for Sales Excellence and the Federated Insurance Role Play Room — all located in the new College of Business Engagement Center in Somsen Hall — have all been named for partners committed to the project.

“Ensuring that WSU has the resources to continue to grow by attracting and retaining the best students available is so vitally important to the long term health of our region,” Jack Richter, President and CEO of Winona National Bank, said. “So if WSU and the College of Business are doing well, I know that our bank will be doing well too.”

Other partners — like Winona State University Foundation Board of Trustees member Bob Strauss and his wife Mary Jo — are supporting the project because they believe there needs to be more communication and exchange between the academic world and the business world. The Strauss Center for Sales Excellence at the College of Business Engagement Center is a celebration of both their commitment to Winona State and Bob’s own 40-year career at Fastenal, where he served as vice president of business development.

“Bob’s passion for sharing the knowledge and expertise he gained during his career with the students at WSU is something we wanted to share,” Mary Jo said.

Ultimately, the Strausses feel that the endowment is a project that shares the goal of most businesses: communicating and building relationships. When students can start growing their networks while they’re still students, there’s no telling how far they’ll go.

A rt and innovation often go hand-in-hand. Both are about pushing boundaries and finding new and creative ways to shape the world.

Art and design students at Winona State University have been creating inspiring and forward-thinking work for years. According to Winona State’s Director of Development, Robert Christiano, there’s just one problem:

“Our current art and design facility does not completely meet the needs of the growing and innovative field of design,” he said.

Winona State’s art program has been expanding, which is great - but the program has outgrown its original home in Watkins Hall in both size and scope.

“Current students are always faced with the limitations of Watkins Hall,” Art Gallery and Collections Coordinator Roger Boulay said. The building hasn’t been updated since the early 1960s, and the students and teachers are crowded for classroom and storage space. Boulay has hopes for a space that will not only solve those issues, but also lend itself to the creativity of the students and staff who work there.

“In art and design, we’re all about aesthetics,” he said. “We believe if you work and study in a beautiful space, it’s going to help you produce higher quality art and design.”

That’s why the University is currently raising funds to retrofit the historic Laird Norton building and create an all-new classroom and community space – to be named the Laird Norton Center for Art and Design. The plan for the center includes not only more classroom and gallery space, but some of the most advanced 21st-century tools for creativity and innovation: a Fabrication Lab, a Makerspace, a Project Incubator Space and state-of-the-art computer labs.

With all of these features, the center is being designed as a hub for the arts - both for students and community members. Students and local artists will be able to use the creative spaces, tools and galleries, making and displaying work side-by-side. That’s something students like Victoria Rogers, who is pursuing a degree in art education, can get behind.

“Getting connections with students and people who aren’t students but just interested in art is a really cool thing,” she said.

The updated learning spaces will also be available for students of any major who would like to bring a design, a project or a product to life.

It takes an investment to make this creative hub a reality. The Laird Norton project will cost a total of $8.5 million. Phase I – which involves getting the building up to code and implementing mechanical, electrical and sprinkler systems – will cost $4.5 million to complete. Once that’s done, it will take an additional $4 million to complete Phases II and III.

So far, donors have committed $1 million out of the $4.5 million required to complete Phase I of the project, and each donor has their own reason to be excited about its

future. It may be in the early phases now, but some – like donor and WSU Foundation Board of Trustees member Dick Record - can already see what will be possible when the center is complete.

“As an art collector, I have admired original art and artists for many years,” he said. His hope is that students will have a newfound confidence when they have a beautiful, updated place to display their work - right in the heart of the Winona Arts District.

“So much original and very good art goes unseen because of the lack of inspiration afforded to students and the space for their art,” Record said. “What can be more satisfying to a student than to have others see and admire their work and their efforts?”

These galleries, according to Winona State University President Scott Olson, will put the Laird Norton Center for Art and Design in the company of “some of the finest universities in the nation” with regard to the quality of available gallery space. But the center, he said, won’t just be a boon for students.

“It will mean a lot to Winonans,” he said. “So much of what makes Winona so vital today is the fact that it has a thriving arts community... this is both a way that students can benefit from the richness that the arts bring to their lives, but also that we can give back to Winona and its citizens.”

Receiving this scholarship has been a blessing in helping finance my studies as I pursue my degrees in Marketing and Public Relations. MEDALLION SOCIETYIn 2012, the WSU Foundation established the Medallion Society as a tribute to honor our generous benefactors who make the University’s mission possible each and every day. The society was named in recognition of the President’s Medallion, which was given as a gift to the University in 1968 from WSU students in honor of President DuFresne’s inauguration. The gems within the medallion, donated by Winona community members, represent the people’s faith in education, a responsibility for the University’s mission, and guardianship on behalf of the State of Minnesota and future generations to come.

The various giving levels of the Medallion Society, ranging from $25,000 to $10 million, are aligned with the different gems found in the medallion itself. A display recognizing members in the society is located outside the entrance to Harriet Johnson Auditorium in Somsen Hall on the WSU campus.

Whether you are looking to create your own lasting legacy or honor family members, friends or a professor/mentor who made an impact on your life, establishing a scholarship at WSU is an incredibly meaningful way of doing so, while simultaneously paying it forward to the next generation.

At Winona State, setting up a scholarship is simple, and we are here to walk you through the process. It will include defining the recipient criteria, the award amount, and the type of scholarship you wish to establish – annual, endowed, or hybrid.

SCHOLARSHIP TYPES:�� Annual Scholarships: Established by giving an annual gift during the academic year for immediate awarding and distribution to a student(s) during that year. You decide the amount you’d like to give each year!�� Endowed Scholarships: Gift(s) to this type of scholarship are given to reach an amount necessary to sustain the scholarship award. Your gifts are invested in perpetuity, with only a portion of the proceeds of the invested scholarship fund expended annually for awards. Any additional earned income is reinvested to guard against inflation. �� Hybrid Scholarship: This type of fund is created with a goal of growing an endowment through lifetime gifts. A gift is made each year, with some funds being temporarily restricted and the rest permanently restricted – meaning annual awards are made while the endowment grows. Approximately 3-5 years following the permanently restricted portion of the fund reaching $25,000, the endowment becomes self-sufficient (based on market conditions).
