Janet BustinLeading with Emotional Intelligence

"I realized that at work I am pretty good how my emotional intelligence serves me to reach my and my team’s goals. At home I wasn’t always the best. I have 2 teenage daughters and we had constant conflict because they don’t keep their room as clean and organized as I think they should. We had a pattern, I went upstairs, noticed the state of their room, I got upset and told them the millionth times that they need to clean or cleaned it myself. After this WebEx I was thinking that in this case my EI doesn’t serve me at all, almost nonexistent.  Yelling doesn’t get us anywhere. The room is not cleaner, I am very upset, my daughters too and at the end nobody wins. So, I told them that from now on, I don’t care if their rooms are messy. I don’t go there all the time to check them out and make myself nervous. I only expect them not to leave clothes or other things anywhere else in the house in the common areas. When I told them this, they were both happy about this solution. The change should come from inside, so one day they will have the urge to keep their environment organized and I can’t really do anything until they realize this. The funny thing is that my older daughter after we talked cleaned her room right away and she keeps it better organized than before without me telling her to do it. There is hope after all and I am happy that I changed my way of thinking about this issue.

The other example is more general. Now I don’t make very quick and emotional decisions. I stop for a moment to think if what I am about to do will help me or won’t. I focus to be more controlled emotionally. This is of course just the beginning and I have a lot to learn but I started it and it is good."

Cinnamongirl Event in San Francisco

Our CMO, Toby Purdy, was gracious in sponsoring a table for our members in the San Francisco area to attend this event on Sunday, October 27, 2013. Here is what some of our FWD members had to say:

"I had a blast ... she even took the time to speak with my niece on the phone to congratulate her on being a recent college graduate, and asked her about our future goals."

"Cinnamon Girls is a wonderful organization for our future young women. I will be reaching out to the executive director this week to get more information for my 15yr daughter to become a member." -Alice Boykin

"The message that had the most impact on me was to never compromise your values, ethics and what you stand for." - Leslie Davis
