Futurism

Futurism was not only an art movement

but also a social movement that

developed in Italy early 20th Century.

It was largely inspired by the

development of cubism .

Futurism was founded in 1909 by the poet

Filippo Thommas Marinetti. The main

figures associated with the movement

where the artists, Umberto Boccioni,

Giacemo Balla, Gino Severint, the

musician Luigi Russolo and the

architect Antonio Sant’Elia.

Futurist Architecture

The Futurist architect Antonio Sant'Elia

expressed his ideas of modernity in his

drawings for La Città Nuova (The New

City) (1912–1914). This project was

never built and Sant'Elia was killed in the

First World War, but his ideas influenced

later generations of architects and artists.

The futurism admired speed, technology, youth and violence. The car, the aeroplane and the industrial city, all that

represented the technological of humanity over nature.

Futurist art focused on machine and motion. They

often broke light and color down into a series of

dots or geometric forms through a process called

divisionism(the separation of colours into

individuals dots or patches)

Futurism influenced many modern art

movements of the 20th century which in

turn influenced the development of

graphic design.

This technology was an important

influence on their approach to show

movement in their painting encouraging

an abstract art with rhythms.
