During its ten years of business, Finnlamelli Eesti OÜ has erectedhouses in Scandinavia, the rest of Europe and Russia. Managingon the international market requires substantial product deve -lopment investments, as the idea of a person's home may varysignifi cantly in different count ries. Perfecting a product meansalso paying attention to the local rules and legislation. The severalqua lity researches that have been conducted in co-operation withuniversities have given us an infallible knowledge of the fact thatwe are able to fulfil the requirements of even the most deman -ding customers.

Success can be achieved only with committed professio nals, whoare not emotionless in their work, but desire to offer the clienttheir best. Objectives alone are not enough. One requires the in-ternal will to arrange things in a manner that makes building ahome a well-paced journey for the contrac ting party.

Everything in this world is changing – also the architecture. Loghouse construction is usually regarded in a traditional key. Mostpicture an old threshing barn, where a taller person might hitone’s head, if standing up straight, or a grass/haulm roof in itstrue archaic form - reminding of the heavy burden of life of theancient farmer.

Things are quite different in modern days. Modern log-arc hi -tecture preserves the best traditions, but frees its crea tor fromfixed frames. This catalogue has been created in co-operationwith Estonian architects, whose task was to create a future con-cept, in form and content, for the log house. Also, the technicalsolutions have been worked out, so that the designed buildingswould not only decorate this edition, but would enab le someoneto enjoy their novelty. I hope that the catalogue in your hands isan experience for you, and provides a mo dern and in-depth viewinto log house construction.

About the project This nearly 400m2 private log house hasbeen divided into separate units that arebased on their function – an entrance, li -ving area, sleeping area, fitness area &spa. There are several varia tions in theutilisation of these units, all up to theclient’s wishes. The sample room planhas taken into account the direction ofthe sun. The kitchen with the living area, and the fitness & spa units enjoy themorning sunrise. The inner garden, livingarea, fitness area & spa, entrance area, and all of the connecting corridors getthe mid-day light. The living area andsauna catch a glimpse of the eveningsunset. The U-shaped house plan may beused to create a private inner gardenwith rich greenery and a pool. The single-storey house has simple formsthat are complimented by quality mate -rials. The roof has a smooth plain claystone finish, and the windows have stain-less steel frames. The log-cros sings atthe corners have been tranformed intocolumns, covered with concrete-com-posite pa nels to change the traditonal loghouse look.

TOWNHOUSE .The traditional-looking log house standsinnovatively out with its unusual glass fa-cade that enab les to fit this type ofhouses also into the city environment. The facades of the building are articu-lated, with added playfulness from theterraces and balconies. The free-formplanning, open rooms and extensiveglass surfaces – stretching from thefloor to the ceiling – flood the room withair and light. Traditional functional roomsare planned on the first floor of the resi -dence. The living room forms the core ofthe building, being located next to asepa rated kitchen-dining room that hasaccess to the terrace. On the right sideof the hall, there is a technical room anda sauna block that is also directly acces-sible from the outside. A carport hasbeen planned for the car. The secondfloor facilitates the private section of thehouse, built around a hall that leads tothree bedrooms and a study. Each bed-room has its personal shower, wardrobeand balcony.

TETRISThe architecture is Nordicly sober andstraight-lined, which is complemented by asubtle Mediterranean dimension. Thebuilding consists of two cross-mountedvolu mes. The prot ruding parts of the se -cond floor add playfulness to the houseand make the facades exciting and tense. The core volume is supplemented by thecarport, sleeping-guestroom block and acove red summer kitchen. The ground plan of the building is charac-terised by free-planning – a living room, kitchen and di ning room that are openedup to the combined roof. This is also wherethe vestibule with a wardrobe, a laundry/technical room and a toilet are located. The kitchen and dining room provide ac-cess to the pleasant roofed terrace, whichcan be converted into a sauna block, if re-quired. The gallery provides access to thefirst floor bedroom block, which could actas a guestroom or an independent study/work room. Near the entrance, there is acarport for two cars that can also be builtinto a closed garage, if the client wishesso. The second floor hall is surrounded bytwo bedrooms with balconies and adjoiningbathrooms.

The house has got wings! The main idea behind this project is tofollow the long traditions of log house architecture, while still providing modernand contemporary aesthetics thatmatch the needs of contemporary peop -le. By linking the traditions with contem-porary architecture, the house becomessuitable for many different surroundings.

The wooden house is based on a3x5.4m unit. Without losing its overallconcept, it provides different possibilitiesfor adjusting the volume of the buildingor the space scheme to the needs of theinhabitant.

The proposed solution is suitable for afamily with 4-6 members. The house isdivided into three different zones: on theright wing the main bedrooms, on theleft the auxiliary rooms and in the middlethe spacious living room with a kitchenand a dining room.

The living room is the "heart" of the buil -ding. The high ceiling and large glasswindows give a feeling of space, and ifpossible, offer stunning views of the sur-roundings. The living room can beopened up to the private terrace, whichis protected by two wings of the building. The living room ceiling flows smoothly tothe eaves that further break the boun -daries between the internal and externalspaces. In the middle of the li ving room, there is an open fireplace that dividesthe living room into different zones andcreates a warm homely feeling.

The best solution would be, if the longestside of the house could be oriented tothe South or to the North. In summer-time, the salient roof protects the livingroom from direct and excessive sunlight, while in wintertime, the sun gives pas-sive energy through the large windows.

In both the exterior and the interior, natu ral and dignified materials – such astimber (logs and plywood), stone andsteel – have been used.

Gross area 291 m2 / Net area 246 m2

KARISMA architects, founded in 2008by four young architects is an Estonian architectural design studio.

Our work covers everything from publicbuildings to private housing. Always wor -king as a team – we believe that crea tivesolutions improve significantly. We like tocollaborate with people of different profes-sional backgrounds to always keep deve -lo ping our design further. Our goal isarchitecture that fits – the people, thecontext, and the environment...

Wood as a material has always been inour focus. For us, it is the honesty of thematerial that attracts. Wood needs nostrengthening, covering, finishing, if usedwisely. Wood by itself has all the qualitiesof a superior material. Building with woodis a friendly solution, to us and to the en-vironment. It feels good, smells good. Thebroad range of visual appea rances makeswood a very interesting material to workwith. Thus, we gladly accepted the offerof designing a house for Finnlamelli Esto-nia.

Martin KinksArchitect, partner

To make the house fit into different settings and en-vironments, we created a two-layer facade that canbe easily altered by covering the facade with differentmaterials. The house has the visual qualities of twoarchitecturally opposite buildings – a traditional loghouse and a more minimalist building. The outer shellis co vered with light-coloured plywood, and the innerwalls are built of Finnlamelli’s laminated logs that aremanufactured with traditional log buil ding techniques. This allows for the house to be also built in city loca-tions, where traditional log houses are not allowedto be built, accor ding to the local building rules.

The building is a single-family residence that consistsof two building blocks – a single-storeyed sauna blockand a two-storeyed living block. The design is flexibleand can be easily converted to different building plotsby rotating, flipping and mirroring the design. The en-trance area divides the two building blocks, so thatthe sauna, living and guest area can be used simul-taneously, at the same time not conflicting with eachother. The North-facing facade is more enclosed tominimize heat loss through windows, and thereby en-hance energy efficiency. The South-facing courtyardside is more open to the surroundings. Terraces andbalconies opening in different directions make it pos-sible to enjoy the sun and landscape all day and allyear around.

Another dear subject for him throughout

the years has been the design of private

Million Dollar View VillaThere are countless properties aroundthe world that possess a “Million DollarView”. The design of this villa, with itswide panoramic views from the interiorspaces and the balconies, brings thebeauty of the outside world to the in-side, and into the hearts of the inha bi -tants.The two-storey villa with a lower groundfloor, which would fit perfectly on abeach or high upon a slope, is a mixedconstruction of rock, log, metal, andglass. The locally-mined rock gives thevilla its visual presence and creates alink with the regional building traditions. The log construction creates a homelyfeeling, and fills the air with nostalgicscents. The metal and glass materialsenable elegant constructional solutions, and clothe the villa in a mo dern de-signer-made robe. A villa that is thestuff that dreams are made of!

Transparent ResidenceThere are often situations, where theplot seems to be upside down. The ac-cess road approaches the plot fromthe South. The terrain slopes down to-wards the North, and this is also thedirection, which offers the most stun-ning views. A solution to this problemcould be a “transparent house”.The architecture of the two-storey resi -dence, which’ cellar floor has been po-sitioned on the back slope, has twocharacteristic volumes. The two-storeyvolume is located on the mor ning side, and it facilitates the bedrooms withbathrooms, a kitchen, a vestibule, andthe central stairway. The light reachesthe rooms through the windows thatopen to all directions. The one-storeyvolume is on the side of the eveningsun, and it facilitates a living room onthree separate surfaces that followsthe terrain of the plot, which slopes to-wards the North. The one-storey vo -lume has got window-openings, as wellas a terrace spanning to all three sides– the South, West and North.

The living room is supplied with naturalsunlight from the afternoon till the sun-set. The living room and the terrace arethe places, where usually the eveningsare spent. The roof of the one-storeyvolu me is articulated to provide the livingroom with more sunlight from theSouth, and to create the look of a ho -mely down-to-Earth house by followingthe terrain of the plot. The articulatedroof of the two-storey volume tries to fitthe solution of the one-storey volume.Because of the slotted look of the one-storey volume, the residence might beconsidered transparent. The transparent residence is a mixedconstruction of rock, log, metal, andglass. The locally-mined rock gives thevilla its visual presence and creates alink with the regional building traditions. The log construction creates a homelyfeeling, and fills the air with nostalgicscents. The metal and glass materialsenable elegant constructional solutions, and clothe the villa in a modern de-signer-made robe.

Sunlight VillaThe Sun is the light that moulds the spacearound us. The Sun is the energy thatmakes the plants grow, and turns the li -ving nature (incl. people) in its direction. The architecture of this Sunlight Villa“catches” the sunlight throughout the day.The perpetual Sun with its light keepscons tantly designing new space inside theSunlight Villa. The space inside the Sun-shine Villa is continuously moving. Theplans of the Villa take into account theclient’s wishes – the silky warmth of theSun caresses the terrace both duringone’s morning coffee, as well as the lastevening hours. It is envi saged that viewsof ideal landscapes should be visiblethrough the Sunlight Villa’s wide stainedglass windows. The visual boarder bet -ween the interior and exterior spacesseems symbolic, but is also physically afew steps away. The one-storey villa that is positioned onsloped landscape is a mixed constructionof rock, log, metal, and glass. The locally-mined rock gives the villa its visual pre -sence and creates a link with the regionalbuilding traditions. The log constructioncreates a homely fee ling, and fills the airwith nostalgic scents. The metal andglass materials enable elegant construc-tional solutions, and clothe the villa in amodern designer-made robe. A Villa thatpresents the possibility of creating anideal landscape with its plentiful options!

Home is an inviting and safe place for every-one, where the presence of wooden mate -rials ensures the daily contentment and easeof mind. Timber is a very agreeable andwarm material. When designing this house,I visioned a more extensive plot than usual.

The street-side exterior door opens into acorridor, which is like a long street, wherethe living spaces are located on the sunnyside and the technical and auxiliary rooms onthe shady side. The room space or floorspace on the shady side can be increasedaccording to the owner’s needs.

The street-corridor ends on a plaza, mea -ning the living room, which is partiallyopened to the slightly zoned kitchen-diningroom.The kitchen and bedrooms are separated bya sauna block that forms a conceptual wholewith the gym located across the corridor.

The length of the corridor can be adapted tothe home owner’s wishes and requirements. The corridor is extended and shortened inaccordance with the number of rooms andsize of the floor space needed. The size ofthe living room and kitchen are also ad-justable – the house becomes either shorteror longer.

By adding a stairway on one side of thecorridor, the one-storey building can becomplemented by a partial second floorwith bedrooms, a balcony and a roof ter-race. The volume of the second floor canbe modified according to the neededfloor space and the owner’s originaltask.

The bedrooms, sauna, kitchen, and livingroom on the sunny side open onto theterraces. The terraces – with or withouta roof – are fitting features for thishouse. The layout of the terraces ischaracterized by small plants and furni-ture, and supported by the greenery onthe plot. The trees, bushes and herbsjoin the terrace, and when utilizing plan -ting boxes, may even stretch to the ex-terior walls of the building. The shapeand measurements of the pool designedfor the terrace may be modified accor -ding to the house owner’s wishes andpool technology.

On the other side of the living room fire-place wall, there is a roofed terracespace with an outside fireplace.

The core volume of the dark-gray stan -ding seam roof of the log house is slopedto one side. The higher edge of the slopeis finished with a parapet and the lower

edge has been left open as an eave onunconcealed beams. The edge of theparapet and the parts of the exterior wallthat are located above the windows havebeen finished with wooden battens – likethe lattices and balcony railings.

The cross-joint corners of the log wallscan be trimmed back and covered withcover boards. For the boundary boardssurrounding the fil lings, also thick andwide rafters are used. The technical rooms of the building andthe parking spaces’ canopies on theshady side of the corridor have been fi -nished with a stone li ning on the outside.

The graphite-gray timber facades arewell comp limented with black bricks andblack joints. The windows are tinted grayand framed in graphite-gray.

The exterior door of the house has beenfitted with a gray glass panel and a longpipe-handle. The exterior stairs in frontof the main entrance have been finishedwith burnt granite. The concrete stonepavement in front of the building hasbeen compiled of gray and black quad-rangular stones laid down in alternatingstripes.
