Daniel HubbellTechnical Evangelist - AccessibilityMicrosoft Trustworthy Computing
Accessibility : Can it be used?
Usability : How well can it be used?
What is Universal Design?
Universal design refers to any broad solution that produces
products that are usable and effective for everyone.
Accessibility is about enabling individuals to adjust their user experience in order
to use technology,
regardless of their age or ability.
Universal DesignDoesn’t Just Happen.
What Problems Do We Face?
If it’s the right thing, why isn’t
Universal Design the norm?
Knowing the Customer:
Most technologies are
designed for a subset of
the true customer base
Digital Divide:
Balance between technical
progress and the ability to
absorb & adapt to change.
Convergence of devices:
Is adding complexity.

access, it’s sensitivity, and who can manipulate it.
Privacy is about the appropriate collection, use and storage of
personal information based on the user’s preference or circumstances.
Accessibility is about enabling individuals to adjust
their user experience in order to access information, regardless of their age or ability.

Conclusion…
Being accessible should
be more than just
thinking about universal
design.
Inclusive innovation is
a challenge to learn from other
disciplines as a way to apply
Universal Design in a more
consistent and efficient way.
