Future Perfect

Future Perfect has two dierent forms: "will have done" and "be going to have done."

Unlike Simple Future forms, Future Perfect forms are usuall interchangeable.

FORM Future Perfect with "Will" [will have + past participle]

•  !ou will have perfected our nglish b the time ou come back from the U.S.

• #ill ou have perfected our nglish b the time ou come back from the U.S.$

•  !ou will not have perfected our nglish b the time ou come back from the U.S.

FORM Future Perfect with "Be Going To" [a!is!are + going to have + past

participle]

•  !ou are going to have perfected our nglish b the time ou come back from the

U.S.

• %re ou going to have perfected our nglish b the time ou come back from the

U.S.$

•  !ou are not going to have perfected our nglish b the time ou come back from

the U.S.

OT#: &t is possible to use either "will" or "be going to" to create the Future Perfect with

little or no dierence in meaning.

 )he Future Perfect e*presses the idea that something will occur before another action in

the future. &t can also show that something will happen before a speci+c time in the

future.

• ( the time he gets home, she is going to have cleaned the entire house.

• & am not going to have +nished this test b - oclock.

• #ill she have learned enough 'hinese to communicate before she moves to

(ei/ing$

• Sam is probabl going to have completed the proposal b the time he leaves this

afternoon.

• ( the time I fnish this course, & will have taken ten tests.

otice in the e*amples above that the reference points 3marked in italics4 are in Present

Simple rather than Future Simple. )his is because the interruptions are in time clauses,

and ou cannot  use future tenses in time clauses.

#ith on6'ontinuous 7erbs and some non6continuous uses of 8i*ed 7erbs, we use the

Future Perfect to show that something will continue up until another action in the future.

• & will have been in 9ondon for si* months b the time I leave.

• ( 8onda, Susan is going to have had m book for a week.

%lthough the above use of Future Perfect is normall limited to on6'ontinuous 7erbs and

non6continuous uses of 8i*ed 7erbs, the words "live," "work," "teach," and "stud" are

sometimes used in this wa even though the are ) on6'ontinuous 7erbs.

9ike all future forms, the Future Perfect cannot be used in clauses beginning with time

e*pressions such as: when, while, before, after, b the time, as soon as, if, unless, etc.

&nstead of Future Perfect, Present Perfect is used.
