What is Outreach for Medicine?

Outreach for Medicine at King’s College London works with students from non-selective state schools in London, providing a programme of events to encourage and enable bright and committed students to study medicine.

Extended Medical Degree Programme (EMDP), a six year medical degree for students from eligible schools who have the aptitude and attitude to study medicine, but who may not have the predicted or actual grades or UKCAT score to secure a place on a conventional medical degree programme. For more information about the EMDP, visit www.kcl.ac.uk/prospectus

of free* events for Gifted & Talented science students from Year 7–11 who have shown interest in medicine and healthcare (for our sixth form events, see our separate brochure). All events aim to raise student’s aspirations and encourage them to consider medicine as a future career option.

MEDICAL ACTIVITY DAYSSponsored by the WCB, these themed days at Guy’s Campus focus on a topic such as health and lifestyle choices. As well as enriching the GCSE science curriculum, these days give students the opportunity to meet current medical students and take part in a range of inspirational activities as well as clinical skills such as CPR, blood taking and suturing. See reverse for a list of pre-set dates.

KEY SKILLS FOR MEDICINEThese interactive workshops take place within your school, and introduce students to the work of medical/healthcare professionals, encouraging them to think about the skills they need and giving ideasand advice on how to develop them. Each workshop also gives students the opportunity to meet current medical students who will help them practice a selection of clinical skills. Maximum group size: 30 students.

STUDENT DOCTORS IN THE CLASSROOMEach March, this popular scheme places medical students in local schools for a 4– 6 week period, during which time they observe and teach lessons on health-related topics across keystages 3–5 and give aspiration-raising talks on their life at medical school. Express your interest early to ensure your school is able to

We are also happy to contribute to other events organised in schools where possible and these events can be organised on an ad hocTo help ensure that we are able to contribute to such events, please give as much advanced notice as possible.

Who should attend?

Our events are most suitable for Gifted & Talented science students who have shown interest in science and healthcare. We recommend making separate bookings for Keystage 3 and 4 groups so that we can tailor our events to an appropriate level.

For Medical Activity Days, a maximum of 20 places are available per school, per event. We recommend that bookings are made as far in advance as possible, as our events are heavily oversubscribed.
