Study ProgrammesWe take a different approach to a study programme, with a focus on being ‘job-ready’. We mirror the world of work, right down to using the same terminology an employer uses. For example, ‘1:1 tutorials’, are called ‘appraisals’, and ‘group tutorials’ are called ‘Continuing Professional Development (CPD)’.

When you start work, you and your employer will literally be talking the same language!

Main qualificationYour main qualification will be a mixture of practical ‘hands-on’ work and classroom based theory sessions, normally assessed by a mix of assignments, practical assessments and exams.

Enrichment (but with a business twist)

Enjoy your favourite enrichment activities, but you’ll also identify transferable skills; ‘leadership’, ‘dedication’ and ‘reliability’. You’ll develop the mind-set to apply your ‘fun’ to getting that future career!

Student Appraisal and CPDAppraisals happen every 6-8 weeks, and keep you on track with achievements, progress, attendance and punctuality. CPD prepares you for work placement, progression into employment, writing a bio or blog, and building a ‘live’ CV via our online software ‘KLoodle’.

Work placement All courses have work placement hours as part of their study programme. Land-based, Health and Social Care, Child Care and Veterinary Nursing students have required hours as part of their main qualification.

Work Placement Coordinators help find appropriate placements, whilst monitoring progress and achievements. Also, our ‘Employability Coaches’ help; you’ll upload photographs, blogs, videos and #tag skills recognised by employers, such as discipline, mutual respect, resilience, etc. A fantastic start for CVs!

English and Maths

English and Maths skills are a top priority for employment or positive progression, and this underpinning knowledge is essential for all career pathways. As such, you may need to continue studying them alongside your main programme, to improve existing grades.

Independent studyOur curriculum teams will help you understand the best way you learn by working on a course-specific project studied independently, or collaboratively.

Programme FeesAny programme fees would be met by the employer. Other costs may be incurred, such as accommodation for any block weeks or transport required for college attendance. Please check with your employer with regards to any additional costs.

Earn while you LearnApprenticeships are work-based programmes. This pathway is a combination of training on-the-job as well as some formal study at College. Students will attend College either on day release or in study blocks. At least 20% of an apprentice’s time on programme is spent studying, this includes time at College and training given by their employer.

To be eligible you need to be in a suitable job role and in paid employment, and most of your learning will take place at your workplace. We cannot provide placements, but we may be able to help guide you in your search for a suitable job. As a starting point try searching on: apprenticeships.gov.uk

Entry RequirementsLevel 2 Apprenticeship - Level 1 Maths and English equivalent to GCSE grade 2 (old GCSE grade E) or above, plus suitable and relevant employment. Students will be expected to work towards Level 2 Maths and English where this has not been achieved.

Level 3 Apprenticeship - Usually a Level 2 work-based qualification (Intermediate Apprenticeship) or considerable work experience, plus suitable employment. Applicants must be capable of achieving, or have achieved, Level 2 Maths and English.

There may be additional requirements on specific apprenticeship programmes.

Further Education Programmes*

There are no course fees if you are a full time student from the UK or EU aged 16-18 on 31st August of the year you start your course.

Age 19+

Advanced Learning Loans are available to learners aged 19 and above to fund Level 3/4 courses such as diplomas and management qualifications.

Bursaries are also available for students aged 19+, visit www.askham-bryan.ac.uk or www.newtonrigg.ac.uk for further details. The loans will cover tuition fees and begin to be paid back once the course is completed and you are earning more than £21,000 a year, so there is no upfront cost.

Interview

Apply Complete the application form online at www.askham-bryan.ac.uk or download a version which can be printed off from our website. You can apply for a course at any time during the year, but it is best to complete your application as early as possible to avoid any problems getting on your chosen course.

Once we get your application, you will then receive an interview date and time with the relevant course manager via text message – please give us a call if you need to rearrange. Don’t be nervous, it’s an opportunity for you to tell us more about yourself and ask any questions you might have!

Following a successful interview you will then receive a course offer detailing the qualifications and grades you need to secure a place on the course. Please confirm with us whether you accept the offer or not.

Offer

On enrolment you must bring evidence of your results or relevant certificates. If you haven’t met all of our entry requirements, you should still attend enrolment and we will try and offer you a place on a suitable alternative course.

This is the time you need to be sorting transport, finance and booking accommodation, don’t leave this too late or you could miss out!

Entry RequirementsWhere do I start?

Usually, we would expect you to move to the level above the qualification you have just achieved.

Introduction to Animal Nursing and Welfare Level 2

4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above (old GCSE grading C or above) to include English Language, Maths or Science, plus two weeks of work experience with suitable references in any animal related placement.

Veterinary Nursing Level 3

5 GCSEs to include English Language, Maths and Science grade 4 or above (old GCSE grading C or above). Students must have secured employment within a veterinary practice, or have been offered an apprenticeship position.

Agriculture Higher Apprenticeship Level 4

A Level 3 qualification in Agriculture with GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Maths. Also suitable for people who have significant agricultural experience. All learners must be employed within the industry.

Additional Requirements (by course)

Do I need to pass certain subjects?

These entry requirements are a general guide. Some courses require particular skills, whilst others need grades and qualifications.

Interviews are where we confirm your suitability for a course. We can assess your functional skills in English and Maths to get you on the right level, and if you’re a mature student we can also take your experience into account.

What if I don’t get the grades?

Firstly, don’t worry. We can often transfer your application to a more suitable course, providing we have availability.

Maths & English

As part of our study programmes, we support those students that achieved a 3 (D) in Maths and English to achieve a 4 (C). If you have 4 GCSEs, but a 3 (D) in Maths or English we will still consider your application. We will consider a 3 (D) in Science, so long as you have a 4 (C) in English and Maths.

RequirementsNo formal qualifications, but you need Entry Level 2 before moving to Entry Level 3.

Requirements4 GCSEs at grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) or above to include 2 from English, Maths or Science. Alternatively a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1 or considerable work experience. Apprentices are required to take Level 2 functional skills exams. Suitable employment is required.

RequirementsA Level 2 work-based qualification (Intermediate Apprenticeship) or 4 GCSEs at grade 4 (old GCSE grade C) or above to include 2 from English, Maths or Science. Alternatively a suitable Level 2 vocational qualification (Merit or above) with English, Maths and Science at Level 2 or considerable vocational experience, including the required level of responsibility for the job role.

I chose Askham Bryan because the campus has a lot of industry standard equipment which we were able to use on the course, and for me the College was in the news a lot, where you would hear about its good reputation.

I have been given a great introduction into Agriculture, where I can look at further options, such as Apprenticeships or progression to Higher Education or employment.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

What’s been your favourite experience?

The best thing I did was probably on the arable side, where you got to learn about how the machines work and how to maintain them and then also how to use crop machinery to its fullest level. Lessons that I still use today when out working on farms.

The sheep shearing element of the course, especially the practical side was really challenging but a very good experience, something I will never forget.

Why Askham Bryan?

Askham Bryan was my first and only choice of college. I’d heard very good things about the College and it was driving distance for me, which was great, as I needed to travel home every day to ride my horses.

I knew that the standard of tuition and the equine department would benefit me as I wanted to gain more experience working in the horse industry.

Do you feel Askham Bryan helped you take the next steps towards a career?

Definitely so. Askham Bryan inspired me to work and achieve as much as I could within the horse industry. Thanks to all the wonderful tutors, especially Fiona Harrison.

I had two of my own horses compete at Bramham International CIC3 this year.

They inspired me to work and achieve as much as I could in the horse industry.

What’s the best thing about the College?

The College was very well maintained with excellent tutors and facilities. It gave me the opportunity to apply for the academy and fortunately I was accepted. This gave me the highest level of training possible to train with Chris Bartle, who I still continue training with today.

Entry Requirements: Usually at least 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including Maths and English (old GCSE grade E) with Science desirable. Alternatively a suitable Level 1 or 1.5 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1.

Minster Provision – Preparing 19+ students for adult social careThis is an innovative partnership between Askham Bryan, City of York Council and Applefields School in York. The programme will assist those with the most complex needs, assisting them to experience a meaningful and smooth transition into adulthood.

Length: One year (Five days a week, one day at Applefields School)

Entry Requirements: In receipt of an Education Health and Care Plan 19+ years of age. (Subject to an interview and subsequent admissions panel)

Animal Care Level 2Students will learn how to plan and monitor animal feeding as well as learn how to maintain animal health, welfare and accommodation. This is an assignment based qualification.

Why Askham Bryan?

Askham Bryan College was the closest college to me but I also knew it has a great reputation among agricultural colleges, so it was the best option for me to do Land-Based Technology.

What are you doing now and what career are you looking to go into?

I want to work on a farm doing both the farming side and work on machines and keep going with my engineering now that I’ve finished at the college, so hopefully I can continue to do that.

I completed really useful work experience on a farm!

The teachers were definitely one of the best things about the course.

What did you find the most challenging?

The coursework was probably the most challenging for me as I’m more of a physical person, but with help from my teachers I was able to tackle that side of the learning well by the end of the course.

Why Askham Bryan?

I chose Askham Bryan because of the range of courses available to me. As a mature student returning to education, Askham Bryan gave me the opportunity to gently ease back into education and gain some additional UCAS points.

What are you doing now and what career are you looking to go into?

I am now a lecturer in Veterinary Nursing at Askham Bryan. Having realised a couple of years into my programme that this was an avenue I was highly interested in and felt I would be good at, I didn’t realise that the opportunity would be available to me so soon in my career.

As for the future, I hope to continue to study and continue to grow my skills as a lecturer.

Askham Bryan gave me the opportunity to gently ease back into education.

Staff were very supportive.

What were the best things about your course and the College?

The best thing about the college when I started was seeing it move through a period of rejuvenation to improve the facilities, which was also a major factor in my decision to remain at Askham Bryan College.

Juggling the assignment workload was the most challenging aspect of studying, however the staff were very supportive.

Data ProtectionWe record your personal information when you contact us and if you subsequently enrol on a course, will use this information to manage your enrolment, study, examination and other services which we may provide to you. We hold any personal information including any sensitive information in accordance with the College’s data retention policy.

When we no longer lawfully require that information, then that information will either be deleted or anonymised. For instance, if you decide not to enrol on a course, then your personal information will be deleted or anonymised after a year.

All data will remain at all times within the UK and European Economic Area (EEA). We may share your information with some third parties, including the Education and Skills Funding Agency, local education authorities, Ofsted, Advanced Learner Loan Company, etc and awarding bodies where we are under a statutory obligation to do so or if it is in the College’s legitimate interests. Where we do this, there will be a clear purpose for the sharing, and a data sharing agreement will first be put in place to define expectations for the use, control and security of your personal information. • We will only change courses if it is necessary for us to do so. This could be because of regulatory change, funding issues or to ensure appropriate accreditation.

• We will let you know about any changes as soon as we can and we will always aim to do this before the start of the academic year. Our terms and conditions and our policies and procedures set out the process we will follow to make any such changes.

• On occasion we may need to make changes to parts of the course or how we deliver it.

• We will only make these changes where we have to or where these changes are to benefit our students.
