How to Read your MeterIf your water bill is higher than expected, it could indicate the amount you use has changed or there is a leak on your supply pipe. One easy way to understand your water use is to regularly check your meter. Follow our simple guide on how to read your meter.

Where to Find your MeterMost water meters are fitted in a chamber in the footpath outside the boundary of your property so we can maintain it and take readings without disturbing you too much. On some larger sites the meter may be located within the site boundary.

The meter sits inside a chamber and is connected to the water supply pipe at the bottom of the chamber.

Look for a cover that may be marked “Water” or “W”. The size of chamber depends on the size of meter and supply pipe. The chamber cover can range from a small circular plastic cover to a large heavy rectangular metal cover.

You may need to use a lever, such as a screwdriver, to help you lift the cover. Larger covers may need two people to lift, with manhole keys, and appropriate health and safety precautions should be taken. On small meters, there may also be a polystyrene frost cover which you will need to remove to see the meter face.

Water may have collected in the chamber, for instance following a period of wet weather. To read the meter, bail out the chamber with a suitable container. Water in the chamber can also indicate the presence of a leak. If you do think you have a leak in your external pipework, our Leakage Find and Fix service can help.

How to Take a ReadingYour water meter has its own unique serial number on it which is also shown on your water bill. Check this number against your bill to ensure you have located the right meter.

You will see seven digits on the meter face, for example:

The first five white digits indicate cubic metres (1 cubic metre = 1,000 litres or 220 gallons). The last two red digits are units of 10 litres and will turn quickly when water is being used. Only the cubic metre figures (the white ones) will be used to calculate your bill.

In the example above, the meter reading is 239 cubic metres (239,460 litres).

A small minority of meters are x10 which means that readings have to be multiplied by ten to give the true volume. These meters will be marked with ‘x10’ on the face.

You will also see a spinner on the meter face. When water is being used, it will spin around rapidly and is helpful when conducting the tests in A Quick Guide on How to Detect a Leak.

Important: please make sure you replace the meter cover (and polystyrene frost cover where necessary) correctly when you have finished reading the meter to avoid any damage or anyone tripping or falling over it.
