FUROR OVER LOTA last minute change in lot locations by the Beatty-Cole

Circus brought a storm of protests from citizens of Canfield(Ohio). The original lot was under water and so the local Chev-rolet dealer offered to let the circus set up on their property.

Parking for circus-goerswas arranged at a high schoolparking lot, but soon cars werebeing parked everywhere. Policeticketed cars parked along thehighway and even towed some ofthem away. Meanwhile residentswere complaining about the cir-cus being located in what theycalled a "residential" zone.

Later city officials said oneside of the highway is resident-ial, but the other side is zonedfor commercial business.

The circus was sponsored bythe Jaycees, who reportedly hadsold 7,400 advance tickets.They estimated that as many as

break-downs have plagued the G-MCircus, thus distracting from itsotherwise good tour.

On the jump into Jackson(Miss) July 24, a seat wagon wasrolled and its tractor demolishedThe seat trailer was salvaged.Then coming out of Clarksville(Ind) on Aug. 9th, a seat wagonwas destroyed.

Show supt., Nick Bengorjumped back to Memphis to bringon another seat wagon that hadbeen stored and just 8 miles outof town the engine of his truckblew up. This unit was to havepicked up the extra blues, mar-quee and ring carpet that werecarried on a damaged seat unit.As a result the show worked sev- .eral days with only three seatwagons and one short end of blues.

Crowd At ConcertSome 3,000 people turned

out for the recent Sheboygan (Wsc)Municipal Band's "Circus Night"concert, which featured some num-bers written by Barbara Taggart,who was a special guest at theprogram. The band was directed byWilliam C. Haack, and was dedicateed to local circus buffs.

Haack said it was the big-gest crowd he had seen at a con-cert since the bandshell was op-ened ten years ago. He indicatedlocal circus fans want to make thtevent an annual affair.

Former clown Percy Rademach-er was also on hand to entertainthe crowd with his special acts.

Altertan newspapers in Calgary(Albta) front-paged Helicopter-Trapeze sensation Dave Merrifieldin their July 12th issues. TheA1hertan carried a photo that ex-tended the full length of thefront page. It showed staff wri-ter Scott Beaven sitting on thetrapeze suspended beneath a heli-copter, as he interviewed thedaring Dave, who was hanging cas-ually by one hand. The CalgaryHerald carried a full-color photcof Dave doing a back-balance withthe Great Calgary Stampede seen •far below.

Show GuestWhat could well be my last

circus visit of the season tookplace at Weirs Beach (N.H.) onAug. 8th, where Sells & Gray weresponsored by the Chamber of Com-merce. The show looked impressiveset-up on the old speedway - likea real old-time show. It could bethat I am prejudiced since I wasin DeLand (Fla) the winter of1961-62 when the show was bringframed for operation, with Will-iam English as manager. I stayedwith it until the end of 1967when Bill retired as manager andyours truly also vanished fromthe scene. But it was good to beback in my old "cage" (my affec-tionate term for the office wa-gon) talking with Willie Storey.

A visit to the trailer homeof the Novotnys, where Vince stillputs the "rag" up and down withspeed and efficiency, found hewas busy. As a result our visiting

was spent with his wife, Vlasta.She no longer appears in the cir-cus ring, except to help hercharming daughter, Donna, who hasa head balancing trap act, whichis done with grace and style, andnever fails to receive a fairshare of the audience applause.

Other performers in the showare the impressive and articulateBilly Earle as ringmaster; theFlorenz Duo; the Antoys; MarieFrance and her Yorkshire terriersplus the Estradas who have an ex-cellent teeterboard number.

It is a fast-paced, nicelybalanced program - real circusfrom start to finish, and the 3/4house at the first show, showedtheir approval with enthusiasm atthe close of each display.

cus of the Rio Grande Valley ofSouth Texas was produced by Car-den-Johnson Circus on Aug. 12-15.It was a fast-paced, two hourproduction, expertly handled byveteran Cleo Plunkett at the mikewith Snooks Swain on drums andCol. Harry Jenkins at the organ.Conky Plunkett is in charge ofprops and Cucialo handled perfor-mance lighting.

Suit FiledA suit asking for $44,700 in

lost wages has been filed by aTexas entertainer- against Show-time Entertainment Corp. and itsoperators in Ohio.

The suit, filed by JamesWarvell, states he signed a con-tract for the Warvell Family toperform with Showtime USA fromJune 17 through Nov. 14, 1976.

The show folded after eightdays on the road and Warvell, whowas to have been paid $2,500 aweek, says he lost $44,700 as aresult of the unfilled contract.
