Mtin and Tij the famous ,er. Bidel, the famous lion tamer, passed most of his childhood in a men.-ijierie. Be- fore he wa* twenty years old liehnd.be come so accustninel to the presence oi wild beasts aud had learned so well how to treat, thorn that he entered their cages as calmly as he would have entered his own room, and seenied to consider theit threatening jaws and snarling lips as s smile of welcome. Early in bis career he was at Bayonut with a menagerie. The afternoon enter- tainment was about to begin, wheu a terri ble cry was raised, "Athir has escaped!" Athir was a young royal tiger, notorious for his savage disposition. If. was easy enough to manage him in the menagerie, "but at large, tempted by easy prey, the danger was terrible. Every one fled, rush- ing into houses and climbing trees. "I set out to built, for him," says Bidel "For a. long time I traced him walking from place to place under the burning sun. Some one whispered to me from a window, fearing apparently that the tiger would overhear, 'He is there.' The finger of this hero pointed cautiously to an ironworker's shop, the door of which stood open. 1 rushed in. "It was black as night. For ten seconds I could see nothing. Then in a corner, crouched ready to spriug, his jaws open, his eyes on fire, I saw tbe runaway. A sec- ond more, and he would have bounded forward, seized aud torn me. I Was ahead of him; it was I who sprung. Then what roaring, what foaming at the mouth, what anger! That hand to hand struggle in the twilight, I breathless, he mad with rage, was short. If it had not been, I should have been lost. "I seized him with both hands by the skin of his back, raised him on my back, and under this enormous weight, without stumbling or flagging, I walked with a firm and equal step toward the menagerie. You may imagine how I was congratu- lated!" '_ The Story of Thompson's Unique I*ipe. Officer Thompson, of the Eighth pre- cint, has a pipe made from the right fore knee cap of a gray mule, and since became into possession of i t nothing but goodluck has attended him. He is rather reticent in talking of the queer pipe, but Officer Hut- ton, who is familiar with its history, says that should it get lost his brother officei believes some ill luck would at once befall him, aud for this reason he keeps a close watch over it. The pipe was made, it is said, by au old negro who lived years ago on the Bladensburg road, and was pre- sented by him to a colored girl to whose charms he had succumbed. The girl was arrested, and wheu searched the pipe was found in her pocket. After it had passed through the arrest I>r T. 1- 1 -HV Uvn. fi,r.i, th f * "-r - ;• I*r I'IT.V'. U jv-n. Her reason.for believ- ing this was that the old negro had warned her never to let a white man even look at it, and if she did she would have bad luck and finally fall into the hands of the "night doctors." So strongly did the girl believe this that wheu released she went out ol the station sobbing. Strange as it may appear, the girl disap- peared from home within a few days, and has never been heard of since. "Whether 01 not her body ever reached the dissecting tahle no one can say. AA r hatever oecame of the old man is not known, but he disap- peared, evidently not at the hands ol "night doctors," because bis personal ef- fects disappeared at the same time. At the beginning of this century the slaughtering of cattle and the packiuij of beef for the New York, Boston aud Phil- adelphia markets was pursued as business by the firm of Ebenezer & Samuel Wilson, two brothers from Mason. 2s. H., who had settled at Troy in 1789. At their two large slaughter houses they frequently killed 1,000 b e a d of cattle weekly for shipment to the three cities. When the war of 1S13-15 began their beef and pork were in great demand, and not a few army contractors gave them large orders for the delivery of these meats packed in barrels at certain places where the army of the north was encamped. From time to time their con- tracts stipulated for the delivery of these provisions at the camp at Green bush, where, among other recruits, were a num- ber- from Troy. The soldiers from Troy, seeing the bar- rels of beef and pork marked with the let- ters "TJ. S." by the government inspectors, denominated them as "Uncle Sam's," meaning that Samuel "Wilson, whom they familiarly called "Uncle Sam," was the person from whom the meat had been pur- chased. The other soldiers assuming that the term "Uncle Sam" was applied to the letters U. S. stamped on the barrels began using the appellation "Uncle Sam" figur- atively for the United States government. From that time the designation "Uncle Sam" for the letters "U. S."grew into pop- ular .acceptance, aud has ever since been as familiarly known as that of "John Bull" for the English nation.—Troy Times. Dr. G C. So strongly did the girl believe this t h a t wheu released she went out ol the station sobbing.

IIow the S a m e "Uncle Sam" Or i s ' " a t ad . A t the beginning of this century the

slaughter ing of catt le and the packiuij of beef for t he New York, Boston aud Ph i l adelphia marke ts was pursued as business by the firm of Ebenezer & Samuel Wilson, two brothers from Mason. 2s. H. , who had settled a t Troy i n 1789. A t their two large s laughter houses they frequently killed 1,000 bead of catt le weekly for sh ipment to the three cities. When the war of 1S13-15 began the i r beef and pork were in great demand, and not a few a rmy contractors gave t hem large orders for the delivery of these meats packed in barrels a t certain places where the a rmy of the north was encamped. F rom t ime to t ime their cont rac ts st ipulated for the delivery of these provisions a t t he camp a t Green bush, where, among other recruits, were a number- from Troy.

The soldiers from Troy, seeing the barrels of beef and pork marked wi th the letters "TJ. S." by the government inspectors, denominated them as "Uncle Sam ' s , " meaning t h a t Samuel "Wilson, whom they familiarly called "Uncle Sam," was t he person from whom the meat had been purchased. The other soldiers assuming t h a t the term "Uncle S a m " was applied to the letters U. S. s tamped on the barrels began using the appellation "Uncle S a m " figuratively for the United States government. F r o m t h a t t ime the designation "Uncle S a m " for the letters " U . S . "grew into popu la r .acceptance, aud has ever since been as familiarly known as t h a t of " J o h n B u l l " for the English nation.—Troy Times.

This isn't true, of course, of the best flash liirbt photographic : work, but the result of the amateur's labor always has this disadvantage, and I may say that even the very best flash light photograph presents this effect iu some •light measure.
