    This work corresponds with techniques included in Orchestra Expressions, Book II, which include hooked or linked bowings (up, up, down, down) and off-the-string playing. Students should keep to the lower half of their bows throughout, as this will energize the music and capture the 6/8 lilt. Any student caught above the middle needs extra spaghetti sauce to get back into the correct style. Those students with the “Heys” and foot stomps in their parts should noT BE SHY!

    A tambourine part is included, as are instructions for audience clapping. A rehearsal piano part has also been included, but is meant only, if needed, for rehearsals. However, the piano part could be adapted for accordion, which would make a fun addition to the sound.

    It was always fun to sing this Italian song in elementary school music classes—who could resist the swinging tarantella rhythms, which made you want to sing and dance together? This neapolitan song, with music composed by Luigi Denza and words by Peppino Turco, was written in 1880 to celebrate the opening of the first funicular (cable car) on the volcano, Mount Vesuvius. It became popular immediately in Italian, as well as in several English translations. The words “Funiculì, Funiculà” indicate that the funicular railway car takes you from here to there—a whole lot easier than walking up the mountain! An explanation is that the Italian word Li’ means “here” and La’ means “there.” Remember Figaro in the Barber of Seville, as he complained that everyone wanted him everywhere at once, singing “Figaro la’” and so on (Figaro here, Figaro there, Figaro up, Figaro down, etc.)

    Many composers, assuming that this was a folk song, quoted it in works (Alfredo Cassela, Richard Strauss, Arnold Schoenberg, nikolai Rimsky-korsakoff), and it as been included in movies and television on many occasions. The tune should be familiar to everyone, and makes a great multicultural selection.
