Toenails infected with nail fungus appear thicker than normal with discoloration below the toenail. Nail fungus may first appear as small white or yellow spots under the tip of the toenail.

As the toenail become increasingly infected the nail may thicken and discolor as well as develop cracked or crumbling edges. Infected nails can separate from the toe causing pain.

Treatment of Fungal Nails (Nail Fungus, Toe Fungus):

• Options for treatment may vary based on the length of time and the severity of toe nail infection at the time of diagnosis.

• While treatment will vary from person to person, toenail fungus is commonly treated by antifungal medication, which will stimulate new nail growth to replace the infected toe nail, topical medications or antifungal lacquer to lessen the infected area.
