BIOGRAPHY OF SPEAKERS
Dr. Victor K. FUNG
Chairman, Victor and William Fung Foundation Group Chairman, Fung Group
Dr. Victor K. Fung is an international business leader, thought leader and philanthropist, who holds professional and civic appointments in Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland and overseas.
He is Group Chairman of the Fung Group, a Hong Kong-based multinational group which comprises major operating groups engaging in sourcing, logistics, distribution and retailing. They include publicly-listed Li & Fung Limited, Global Brands Group Holding Limited, Convenience Retail Asia Limited and other privately held entities. Dr. Fung played a leading role in driving the development of the supply chain infrastructure at Li & Fung Limited, which has enabled it to become the leading consumer goods design, development, sourcing, and logistics company for major retailers and brands around the world.
Dr. Fung holds independent non-executive Directorships with Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited (Hong Kong) and Koc Holding A.S. (Turkey).
Dr. Fung is Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Asia Global Institute at the University of Hong Kong, a multi-disciplinary think-tank co-established with the Fung Global Institute to assume and carry forward the Fung Global Institute’s mission to generate and disseminate research and ideas on global issues from Asian perspectives. He is also Chairman of the 2022 Foundation, a non-profit entity focused on research into Hong Kong’s long-term competitiveness.
Also, in Hong Kong, Dr. Fung is a Non-official Member of Chief Executive’s Council of Advisers on Innovation and Strategic Development, an Adviser of the Infrastructure Financing Facilitation Office of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Finance. He is a former Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (1991-2000), a Hong Kong representative on the APEC Business Advisory Council (1996-2003), Chairman of the Airport Authority Hong Kong (1999-2008), Chairman of the Council of The University of Hong Kong (2001-2009), Chairman of the Greater Pearl River Delta Business Council (2004-2013) and Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme (2014-2018).
On the Chinese Mainland, he is a member of the International Business Leaders Advisory Council for the Mayor of Beijing, member of the Advisory Board of the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University, an Honorary Trustee of Peking University and an Honorary Professor of Renmin University. He is a former member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (2003-2018), Vice-Chairman of the China Centre for International Economic Exchanges (2009-2014).
Internationally, Dr. Fung played a leadership role from 2007 in the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce, of which he was Chairman from 2008 to 2010. From 2012 to 2013, he was a member of the World Trade Organisation's Panel On Defining The Future of Trade.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Dr. Fung holds Bachelor and Master Degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After gaining his Doctorate in Business Economics from Harvard University, he taught as a professor at Harvard Business School before returning to the family business in Hong Kong in 1976.
Dr. Fung is married with three adult children.

Mr. Darren PALFREY
Chief Digital Officer, Fung Group
Darren Palfrey is Chief Digital Officer. He joined Li & Fung in January 2019 to accelerate the Company’s digital strategy. He is focused on realizing Li & Fung’s vision of creating the supply chain of the future and building the LF digital platform – a fully-integrated digital platform that connects suppliers, customers and other partners with
end-to-end visibility.
Prior to joining Li & Fung, Darren co-founded and was the COO of Gravity Supply Chain, at which his team developed and brought to market, a state-of-the-art digital supply chain management platform.
Darren is a successful entrepreneur with over two decades of industry experience. He previously held a number of leadership roles at Uniserve Group and TCC Global.

Mr. Herbert CHIA
Director, Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Venture Partner, Sequoia Capital China Fund
Mr. Herbert Chia was born in Hong Kong and he is currently a member of Hong Kong Zhi Gong Party Association. He received education in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. He also engaged in advanced studies at the University
of New South Wales, Stanford University, INSEAD, and Economics and Management School of Tsinghua University.
For the past ten years, Mr. Chia has been living in Mainland China and Hong Kong. With multicultural living environment, international education background and abundant Internet Industry working experience, Mr. Chia forms a unique and keen thinking method. Over these years, he has devoted himself to researching of SMEs development in the Internet industry. He has unique insights into the future trends of e-commerce. He is a future trend observer, practical trainer and columnist.
As the member of Task force on promoting cross-boundary data in Hong Kong and Advisory Committee on Innovation and Technology of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr. Chia has actively promoted Hong Kong to become the big data pilot city in The China Great Bay Area and The Belt and Road. Mr. Chia has devoted to taking China’s Big Data industry to a new level. He
is also the member of Big Data Advisory Group of Beijing Government, the advisor of Guiyang Big Data Committee, the expert of Shanghai Bureau of Justice Big Data Laboratory, deputy director of China Computer Federation Big Data Committee, the president of Youedata Research Institute, the chief data consultant of JD Finance and the chief consultant of TalkingData. Mr. Chia is also the adjunct professor of School of Management of Zhejiang University, Professor of Financial EMBA Program at Tsinghua PBC School of Finance, Tsinghua University Education Guidance Committee member (Big Data Project) and advisory Committee of Big Data Institute – HKUST.
He joined Alibaba in August 2010 and served as the Vice President of Alibaba (China) Co., Ltd. and the Chairman of its Data Committee. During his tenure, the team was awarded "China Excellent IT Team" in the 2014 in "Excellent Chinese CIO" selection. In addition, he was also rated as 2017 “China Top 10 Most Influential Big Data Entrepreneurs” by the State Information Center. He is the author of the best-selling books "The Big Data", "The Nature of Big Data" and "Engaging
Communities Through Data-Smart Governance". Now, as a globally recognized pioneer of big data, Mr. Chia attributes his success to the passion for innovation and the understanding of the needs of industrial data.

Dr. Samuel GALLER
(FS2009-10, Harvard University)
Dr Samuel Galler recently completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at
Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University. His research examines the
management strategies of HIV civil organizations in several cities in
Mainland China. He recently received a Blakemore Fellowship to
study Classical Chinese at National Taiwan University. Sam’s academic interests include social
stigma, civil-state relations, global health, international development, paleography, and Chinese
literature and philosophy. Outside of academia, Sam has worked in management consulting and
artificial intelligence. He is currently working on several projects at the intersection of machine
learning and energy. Sam holds a DPhil in International Development from the University of Oxford
and an AM and AB in East Asian Studies from Harvard University.

Professor Lap-Chee TSUI
President, Victor and William Fung Foundation
Professor Lap-Chee Tsui is the President of Victor and William Fung
Foundation, Hong Kong. He is also the Founding President of the
Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong and Director of Qiushi Academy
for Advanced Studies and Master of the Residential College of
International Campus, Zhejiang University, China. He was the 14th Vice Chancellor of The
University of Hong Kong and, prior to which, he was Geneticist-in-Chief at the Hospital for Sick
Children in Toronto and University Professor at University of Toronto, Canada.
Professor Tsui received his Bachelor and Master degrees from the Chinese University of Hong Kong
and his PhD from University of Pittsburgh in 1979. He is world renowned for his research work in
human genetics and genomics, notably the identification of the gene for Cystic Fibrosis in 1989
and, later, other human genetic diseases while conducting a comprehensive characterization of
human chromosome 7.
Dr. Tsui has over 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 65 invited book chapters. He is the
recipient of many national and international prizes, and other awards including the 2018 Warren
Alpert Foundation Prize. He is a Fellow of Royal Society of Canada, Fellow of Royal Society of
London and Fellow of Academia Sinica. He is an Associate Member of the National Academy of
Sciences USA, a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Laureate of the
Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. He has received many awards over the years, including 16
honorary doctoral degrees from universities around the world, the Order of Canada, the Order of
Ontario, Knight of the Légion d'Honneur of France and the Grand Bauhinia Medal, the Gold
Bauhinia Star and Justice of the Peace from the Hong Kong SAR Government.

Mr. Kai-man WONG
Director, Victor and William Fung Foundation
Mr. Kai-man Wong is a Director of Victor and William Fung
Foundation; past Non-Executive Director of the Securities and
Futures Commission (2009-2015), Hong Kong; current member of
the Financial Reporting Council, Hong Kong; past Court and Council
Member of The University of Hong Kong (2010-2017); Council Member of the City University of
Hong Kong (2007-2012) and Lingnan University (1999-2006). He was an Honorary Associate
Professor, School of Business, The University of Hong Kong (2005 – January 2018). He is a past and
current Independent Non-Executive Director of five listed companies and a retail bank in Hong
Kong. Mr Wong also serves on the boards of several non-governmental organisations and has
served on government advisory committees and statutory bodies in the areas of land, immigration,
energy, law-enforcement, education and technology.
Mr. Wong was an audit partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Hong Kong with 32 years of
audit, Initial Public Offer, due diligence and computer audit experience in London and Hong Kong
offices of PwC. He retired as a partner on 30 June 2005.
Mr. Wong obtained his Bachelor of Science in Physics from The University of Hong Kong and
Master of Business Administration from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and is a fellow of
the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, United Kingdom and a fellow of the Hong Kong
Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Mr. Wong was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2002 and was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star
in 2007 by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. He was conferred an
honorary fellow of the Lingnan University, Hong Kong in 2007, City University of Hong Kong in
2013 and The University of Hong Kong in 2016.

STUDENT SUBSIDIES
The Foundation is aware that it could be a burden to some of the Fung Scholars who, being current
full-time students, lack the financial means to travel all the way to Shanghai, China. We shall grant
a subsidy to the Fung Scholars who are keen on attending all programmes on Conference Day 2.
The allocation of subsidies by location is set out as follows:-
