First, start strategising1. Get creative Think about your strengths, the things you are good at and use them! For example, if you’re a great cook then host a Cambodian-themed dinner party using Sunrise Amok Spice in your curry. Or, if you work with children host a workplace event, your colleagues are likely to be very interested in what you are doing and donate. We've got some ideas in the next column.

2. Consider all your networks Friends, family, colleagues, sporting teams and other networks can help you reach your fundraising goal. If you’ve previously met someone that could help you organise an amazing event or could grab attention, then seek them out! You might just find that donations add up quicker this way.

3. Think about how you are going to promote your fundraiser Social media is a useful tool and is a fantastic way to raise awareness of the Sunrise Cambodia story and your fundraising efforts. We have included tips on pages 4 and 5. Traditional methods are also very effective, too.

Second, pick your fundraiserDecide how you want to raise funds. There are countless ways you could do it: afternoon teas, auctions, garage sales, karaoke parties, sports challenges, quiz nights or even treasure hunts. Here are a few of our top choices:

Host a movie screening at your home Pick your favourite movie that is about or takes place in Cambodia, get a copy of the DVD and hold a screening party at your home. Think The Killing Fields (1984), Lord Jim (1965), Same Same but Different (2009), Two Brothers (2004), City of Ghosts (2002), The Missing Picture (2013) or even Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001). Hold a raffle to bump up your donations as well.

Host a movie screening at the local cinema Partner up with your local cinema for a deal on a great new release and sell tickets at a premium. Include a raffle of donated goodies and you could raise thousands towards your goal. Done well, this kind of event has been known to raise well over $5,000! Check out the 'how to' on page 8.

Host a Foodie Fundraiser Bang some sangers on the barbie, have a bake sale, run a lemonade stall, host a high tea or have a party. These types of events have a track record for raising big money. Read the ‘how to’ on page 9 to get your Foodie Fundraiser started!

Sell Cadbury choccies at work This is just too simple, especially if you have a large workplace. Order boxes of choccies from the Cadbury fundraising website, www.fundraising.com.au, place them strategically around the office with a blurb about what you are fundraising for (us of course!) and watch the money come in. Once the box is in place you don’t even have to leave your desk. In fact, we know of one awesome fundraiser who did just this and raised over $5,000 without leaving her desk!

Is it your birthday? Do you really need more gifts? Ask for donations instead of birthday presents. Start up an Everyday Hero fundraising page, send out the URL through social media or email and watch your friends and family give you the best gift of all!

GET FUN-RAISINGCheck out our top fundraising ideas below - they'll help you to get the ball rolling on reaching your fundraising goals.

Lastly, read our Fundraising Guidelines and register your eventMake sure to read our Fundraising Guidelines on pages 6 and 7 so you understand ways we can help, your responsibilities and any legal items you may need to consider. Then register online or give us a call on 1300 894 591 for a form. That way we can review and approve your fundraising and issue you with an Authority to Fundraise letter. It also gives us the opportunity to help promote your fundraiser if it is a public event.

JUMP ONLINE + COMMUNICATEFundraising online is a breeze with platforms like Everyday Hero, so utilise them and your social media to spread the word!

Social media is a great way to build momentum for your event, increase attendance, raise funds towards your goal and raise awareness of Sunrise Cambodia. You might be surprised by who pops out of the dark corners of your friends list and donates!

Share our content and create your own too. Just make sure your content is consistent with Sunrise Cambodia’s values and please don’t create additional Facebook event pages or fundraising pages that use our name in the title. Instead, talk about how the funds raised from your event will go to Sunrise Cambodia.

A press release in your local paper is a great way of generating interest and raising funds – local papers love local heroes! Your press release should be written in the third person, be specific to your story and fundraising efforts and targeted to appropriate publications. We ask that you run it by us before sending it out. This way we can ensure that the story of Sunrise Cambodia is being accurately represented and that you are making the most of your exposure.

Please don’t contact the press on our behalf, we have a PR team that can handle any enquiry. Please forward any queries to us.

How to get started on Everyday HeroEveryday Hero is one of the easiest ways for people to donate to your specific fundraiser and also receive tax deductible receipts. Don't worry if you don't use a computer though. We have donation forms that we can send you.

1. Head over to www.everydayhero.com/au Click ‘Get Started’ on the top right hand side of the page or log in if you already have an account.

2. Make the title of your page short and snazzy Just don’t use Sunrise Cambodia in your actual campaign name. It can get a bit confusing. Use something like “Suzie’s mission to fund education in Cambodia!”.

3. Set your dollar amount target If you’re ambitious, aim high!

4. Select The Australia Cambodia Foundation/Sunrise Cambodia as the charity you are fundraising for

5. Fill out the rest of the details Upload an awesome profile photo and personalise as you go. Be sure to include your story and why you are passionate about supporting the work of Sunrise Cambodia. Visit our website to find accurate information about the work of the organisation or have a look at our FAQs on pages 10 and 11. We are not an orphanage so please ensure you do not use this terminology.

6. Promote, promote, promote! Every dollar you raise makes a real difference, so make

sure to promote this page to your networks and ask them to support you in your efforts. Share its unique URL on your social media channels and include it in the footer of all your emails.

7. Email your closest friends and family about your fundraising first It’s easier asking the people you know best first up. Then put the call out to your other networks.

8. Know how much to ask your supporters to give We have fundraising handles on our website (an easy spot to see them all is on the donate page). A donation of as little as $10 can buy a pair of school shoes of a Sunrise student.

9. If you are finding it hard to get that first donation, why not make it yourself! Some people don’t like being the ‘first’ so if you make a donation to start with it will get the ball rolling. Your donation will also set a precedent for the amounts your friends and family will donate so why not go big with a personal donation.

10. Keep updating your page Make updates and post comments throughout your fundraising campaign and during your preparations for events. Share again each time to gather more interest.

11. Be interactive with your donors Thank them for their donations and share photos from your events. And have a big celebration when you’ve hit your target!

SOCIAL MEDIA TIPSUsing social media is great way to maximise the promotion of your fundraising.

1. Create content that people will want to share People share things that will make them look like good, interesting people. This means inspirational stories, humour, outrage and how they’ve helped a cause. An easy test is asking yourself: “Would I share this if MY friend posted it?” If yes, perfect. If no, try again.

2. Appeal to people’s emotions Tell personal stories that make people laugh, cry and inspire them to make a difference.

3. Always post a captivating photo They capture peoples attention. Use images from our website and our social media pages, but make sure to always credit the photographer. Remember, your friends are interested in YOUR fundraising journey, so don’t shy away from pictures of yourself either.

4. Twitter is perfect for short, sharp messages

Tweets should be 100 characters long to allow those re-tweeters an extra 40 characters for their own message. Include our handle (@sunrisecambodia) and always include links – use bitly.com to shorten them. The lifespan of a tweet is short, so go hard and fast with them and don’t worry about oversaturation – the more the merrier on Twitter.

5. Facebook is better for more in-depth stories Just make sure your very first line catches readers' attention. Remember to include a link to your fundraising page, a call to action and a good image.

6. Instagram is all about images Use brief captions and a lot of hashtags. Put a link to your Everyday Hero fundraising page in your bio and direct people there. Instagram stories are a great new way to make your followers feel like they are “behind

the scenes” too so post stories of you setting up for events or working on your posters to connect.

7. Post often

You might feel like people are sick of your posts, but remember – they follow hundreds of people. Seeing your fundraising posts once a day is probably a welcome reprieve from all the selfies and status’s.

8. Don’t be ALL about the ask Remember to use social media to acknowledge sponsors who have donated raffle prizes, thank people who have donated and shout out to all your friends who have helped you out every step of the way. Public gratitude goes a long way.

9. Never post anything you wouldn’t want to see in a newspaper Keep the language clean, be polite and stay on message. Remember – once you post something online, it’s there forever.

10. Use us! If you want the perfect photo, a heart-wrenching story or just a paragraph of information we are here to help.

FUNDRAISING GUIDELINESThese guidelines should help get you well on your way to fundraising success and outlines how we can help you get there.

Fundraising is a lot of fun and is an incredibly rewarding thing to do. Plus, the team at Sunrise Cambodia are right behind you, ready to support you to make the most of your event or challenge so you can enjoy the process.

Getting startedWe’ll get the tough stuff out of the way first! As much as we would love to be closely involved in your event, Sunrise Cambodia has a small fundraising team in Australia, therefore we do not have the capacity to manage and monitor your fundraising activities for you. You will need to ask us for an application form to approve and register your fundraising activity. If approved we will issue you with an Authority to Fundraise letter. You will need to consider any permits, permissions or licenses that your state or territory and/or local council may require. In particular, please note:

• If your event is connected with one or more states or territories, the legal requirements of each must be taken into account. Also, if your fundraising event is administered over the internet then the laws of all states and territories may apply. • There may be restrictions on children being involved in collecting funds. • Some Councils may have local government requirements, e.g. for on street collections. • If you are planning a raffle, lottery, competition or similar gaming activity you will need to consider the gaming laws in your state or territory. • There are restrictions on the tax deductibility of donations associated with the supply of goods or services. Donations only occur where there is no exchange of money for items of value. These include charity auctions and ticketed events. Contact the ATO or visit their website to find out more.

You may also need to consider insurance and venue hire. Sunrise Cambodia cannot be responsible for any expenses incurred by you for running your event so please factor this into your planning.

Resources and logo usageWe have a number of resources for you to use to promote your event - just let us know how we can help. They include brochures, copies of the latest newsletter and digital resources: images, Facebook banners and up-to-date video footage.

We do not give out our logo or a letterhead to independent fundraisers as we are unable to monitor its usage on a large scale. Instead, you can use our name in print to say that the proceeds will be going to Sunrise Cambodia (please note that we are no longer called Sunrise Children's Villages). You can also include a link to our website to show people the work we do supporting children, families and communities in Cambodia.

Make sure to register your 'fundraiser' with us so that we can authorise it and provide you with the correct documentation. Register online or all us on 1300 894 591 for a form.

Information to include when advertising your fundraiserYour fundraiser is your idea, so generating publicity is in your hands. If you haven't already, read our social media, PR requirements and tips on pages 4 and 5. If you have any concerns please get in touch. It's important that Sunrise Cambodia is represented correctly in the media.

We also recommend that you state how much of the raised funds will be donated to Sunrise Cambodia in your advertising. For example, “all funds will be donated” or “all proceeds will be donated”. If your event is supporting multiple charities also make it clear what percentage of funds raised go to each charity. It’s always easier to have one charity that you are fundraising for though and we would love it to be Sunrise!

FUNDRAISING GUIDELINESThese guidelines should help get you well on your way to fundraising success and outlines how we can help you get there.

How to collect donationsYou’ve put the fundraiser together and now you get to see the pay-off! It’s your responsibility to collect and manage all the funds that are raised at your event and give us accurate financial records.

If you have any concerns with collecting cash donations, your supporters can donate via:

• The Sunrise Cambodia website - you could have a laptop set up for this on the day/night. • Your own Everyday Hero page (please note that this option has a processing fee). • A cheque made out to The Australia Cambodia Foundation Inc.

If you do receive cash donations, converting them to a bank cheque or money order made out to The Australia Cambodia Foundation Inc. is the best idea. Do not bank any donations into your own account, as this is prohibited by fundraising laws in a number of states. Ensure you forward any donations containing credit card details as soon as possible for privacy reasons so that we can process these and discard the details appropriately.

We do not provide collection tins (but it is something we are looking into for the future).

How donors can get tax deductible receiptsDonations $2 and above are tax deductible in Australia. Sunrise Cambodia is an approved project of The Australia Cambodia Foundation (ACF), a DGR charity approved by the Australian Tax Office and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. We do not provide receipt books for fundraisers to receipt on our behalf.

Donors receive tax deductible receipts automatically when donating through our website or on your Everyday Hero page (there is also an option for offline donations here too so they can be added to your goal).

If a donor is contributing to you fundraiser via cash or cheque, please forward their donation to us along with their personal details (name, phone number and email or mailing address). This is a requirement of receipting. Ask

us for our Donation Tracking Form to make it easier.

Please note that donations are only tax deductible if they are true gifts; they must be a voluntary transfer of money or property where the donor receives no material benefit or advantage.

How to give raised funds to SunrisePlease send all funds raised to Sunrise as soon as possible after your event. Cheques, bank cheques and money orders can be posted to PO BOX 2266 Clovelly NSW 2031. Or contact for our bank details if you would prefer to do an electronic transfer.

Last but not least, tell us how it all went! We'd love to hear all about your event and would welcome any photos that we could use in future publications and online. Tag us if you upload any photos to social media so we can help promote you!

Sunrise Cambodia reserves the right to update or modify these guidelines at any time without prior notice. For this reason, we recommend that you review them on our website or ask for a new copy each time you are fundraising for us.

PAGE 8 • Sunrise Cambodia Fundraising Kit

1. Have an Everyday Hero fundraising page set up and ready to go. Once you have the movie screening details set, add them to this page and share across your social media or via email.

2. Pick a new release movie that you think will appeal to the most people.

3. Set a date and contact your local cinema. Cinemas know what they are doing; they do it all day, every day. We recommend holding this at a cinema rather than setting up a screening at a different venue for this reason. You’ll also be avoiding having to pay hefty distribution rights to screen a film, the cinema has it covered. Plus, cinemas can hold a lot of people which

means opportunity for raising big funds!

4. Negotiate the costs with the cinema. It’s best to get the venue for free so you can maximize all the funds raised on the night. We recommend asking the cinema to reduce the tickets price to $8 and then sell your event entry for $25 or $30 each.

5. Register your event online or give us a call so we can help promote it.

6. Invite as many people in your group of friends, family or network that you can. Give them a RSVP date so you know how many people you will have to organise food and drinks for. Include details about how they can buy tickets to your screening.

HOW TO HOST A MOVIE SCREENINGWith these tips, your movie screening at the local cinema will be number one at the box office.

7. Promote your event and fundraising page - check out our social media and PR tips.

8. Send a reminder to your invitees and follow up anyone that you haven’t received a RSVP from. Ask them to donate to your fundraising page even if they can’t make it.

9. Organise food and drinks. No one likes being hungry at a party and if you can manage to have them donated, then even better! Do your research. Look for a company that would be happy to donate to fundraising events or you may be able to rally your friends to help. You might need to discuss bringing catering to the event with the cinema so ask them first. Please note that tax-deductible receipts cannot be issued for food and beverage donations or discounts.

10. Organise to host a raffle on the night to raise more funds. Sell the tickets at the door (it is the most effective way of doing it) and go for a few great prizes

that people will really want. Price the tickets at $5 each, or three for $10 and don’t give people the option of not buying them – just ask them if they bought one yet! Draw the tickets quickly either just before the main event or at the end.

11. Organise to have some volunteers at your event handing our Sunrise Cambodia brochures (we can send you these). Everyone at your screening should walk out with one and handing them out means that people won’t lose them. If they are just on the seats they might slip off before anyone has noticed them.

12. We recommend making a clear schedule for your event. As a host it is important to not run late as it brings down the momentum. Give yourself plenty of time to set-up before everyone arrives. Sell your raffle tickets at the door as people get there and allow time (about 15 minutes) to introduce yourself and why you are fundraising for Sunrise before the show.

Page 9: FUNDRAISING KIT - Sunrise Cambodia · Check out our top fundraising ideas below - they'll help you to get the ball rolling on reaching your fundraising goals. Lastly, read our Fundraising

sunrisecambodia.org.au • PAGE 9

1. Have your Everyday Hero fundraising page all set up so once your event details are confirmed you can add them to the page and share across your social media or via email.

2. Set a date and decide on a venue. The venue could be home, work, school, church or any other public venue. Try to get it for free to maximize the amount of funds raised.

3. Tell the Sunrise Cambodia crew about your event so we can get in on all the fun and help promote it on our website’s event page. Register your event online or give us a call.

4. Send out invitations to your foodie fundraiser! Invite as many friends and family you can. Don’t leave anyone out. Give your guests a RSVP date so you know how many people you will have to organise food and drinks for. If someone can’t attend, ask them to make a donation anyway.

5. Depending on how big your foodie fundraiser is, include details about buying tickets (the amount people donate to attend).

6. Spread the word!

7. If you add in a raffle you could raise even more money in one event. Sell your tickets at the door (it is the most effective way of doing it) and go for a few great prizes

that people will really want. Price the tickets at $5 each,

or three for $10 and don’t give people the option of not

buying them – just ask them if they bought one yet.

Draw the tickets while everyone is enjoying the event

and allow each winner to choose their prize one after

the other.

8. Organise the food and drinks. If you can manage to

have them donated, then even better. Look for a local

store that would be happy to donate. Please note that

tax-deductible receipts cannot be issued for food and

beverage donations or discounts.

9. Organise to have some volunteers at your event

handing our Sunrise Cambodia brochures (we can send

you these). This way everyone will remember why you

put on this shin-dig by the end of the night!

10. Lastly, make a schedule. Give yourself plenty of time

to set-up before everyone arrives. Sell your raffle tickets

at the door as people arrive and allow some time while

the event is in full force (about 15 minutes) to introduce

yourself and why you are fundraising for Sunrise. Then

draw the raffle!

ALL THE SUNRISE FAQs

What is Sunrise Cambodia?Sunrise Cambodia is an education and sustainable community development charity. It works on the ground in Cambodia to achieve sustainable community development and support at-risk kids and poor families. The charity is entirely funded by generous donors.

How did Sunrise Cambodia all begin?Geraldine Cox AM founded Sunrise Cambodia in the early 1990s. She first came to Cambodia in the ‘70s working as a secretary for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Phnom Penh. It was a dangerous time to be in South East Asia with the Vietnam War spilling over

into Cambodia, not quite the posting she thought she would get!

Cambodia has a heart breaking recent history – during the 1960s and ’70s, while civil war raged in Cambodia, the USA carpet bombed the Cambodian countryside. The communists won the civil war and over the next four years, more than a quarter of the population was systematically murdered by its leader, Pol Pot. The disastrous impact of this history on the gentle-natured people of Cambodia is still profound.

After her posting in Phnom Penh, Geraldine went on to work for the Department of Foreign Affairs in postings around the world before returning to Australia in the late 1980s. She worked in the corporate world for a number of years but decided to return to Cambodia, the country and people she could not stop thinking about. This decision came after a visit in 1993 in which Geraldine took in a group of orphans she found fending for themselves near the Thai border; they were the orphaned children of Pol Pot’s murderous regime after the civil war. So, Geraldine opened the doors of Sunrise Cambodia and became “mum to many”, taking in street kids, orphans and the disabled to give them food, a place to sleep, an education and lots of love.

The military coup of 1997 threatened the existence of the charity, but Sunrise Cambodia and Geraldine Cox persevered through this frightening and uncertain time to remain open to care for the kids and families of Cambodia.

Is Sunrise Cambodia an orphanage?Sunrise Cambodia no longer uses the term orphanage to describe the charity and we expect you to not use this term when describing us. We began as an orphanage but have moved away from this model in favour of education and sustainable community development, as well as support for families as a whole. Please describe Sunrise Cambodia as an education and sustainable community development charity.

Sometimes a village just needs some extra support to stay above the poverty line and keep their kids safe, well and at home with their family. It is much more cost effective to support a village as a whole than to institutionalise children. Much of our time and effort these days is finding the families of trafficked children and repatriating them home, then supporting those villages to offer education and health services.

There will always be some kids in Cambodia who need full time residential care. The Cambodian government now refers at risk children to our centres and we will continue

give them a safe home and good education.

What community development projects does Sunrise Cambodia do?Sunrise Cambodia engages in a number of community development projects that benefit thousands of Cambodians. All projects are done in consultation with the communities and their leaders. They include:

• Building new, insulated homes for Cambodian families to ensure they are safe. • Giving bikes to local kids so they can get to school. • Installing water pumps for villages so they have access clean water. • Bridge and roadway renovations to ensure villagers can travel safely. • Health centres and mobile hospital clinics giving free medical and mental health care services. • Schooling and sports coaching, not only for kids in residential care but for kids in neighbouring villages.

Where are Sunrise Cambodia’s projects?Sunrise Kandal was the first of Sunrise Cambodia’s projects and is the original Sunrise location. It provides some residential care, its facilities include a school, soccer field, boxing gym and all-purpose sports court. Sunrise staff also engage in community development work to support local villages. It is located just outside of Phnom Penh.

Sunrise Siem Reap is also a residential care centre with schooling and other activities available to kids in care and those in neighbouring villages. Siem Reap also engages in sustainable community development work with the surrounding villages, has a training restaurant on site and is developing some very exciting social enterprise projects!

Sunrise Kampong Speu is a community development project partnership with a local government school. It has a brilliant soccer academy that trains some of the best soccer players in Cambodia. This and the other sports programs have seen school attendance jump from 80 to over 600 students!

How are The Australia Cambodia Foundation and Sunrise Cambodia related? The Australia Cambodia Foundation (ACF) is a registered DGR charity in Australia. It supports a range of approved community partners that give food, shelter, education and healthcare to the people of Cambodia.

Sunrise Cambodia changed its name from Sunrise Children’s Villages in late 2015 to herald a new beginning for the charity.

The focus of the charity moved away from the orphanage model towards education and sustainable community development some time ago. We believe the name change better reflects the work we do helping Cambodia’s communities and families as a whole.

Can I fundraise for specific projects?Sunrise Cambodia is focused on raising funds to support our work as a whole, with funds allocated to where they are needed most at that time. If your event has the capacity to support the funding of major community development projects, please contact us first at [email protected].

Can I collect items to donate to Sunrise Cambodia? We would prefer that you do not collect items to donate. Sunrise buys goods locally to support the local Cambodian economy. The postal system is also notoriously unreliable and can cost quite a lot, so it’s likely that it may not even get there. The funds you will be raising will support us in

doing this.

Can Geraldine Cox come to my fundraising event?Geraldine lives in Cambodia full time so she probably won't be able to attend your event but it doesn’t hurt to ask. She is in Australia a number of times a year, so get in

touch. Be sure to give us plenty of notice though.
