1. ABOUT US

Founded on 19 November 2001, World Toilet Organization (WTO) is a global non-profit committed to a world with a clean safe toilet and sanitation for everyone, everywhere, at all times. WTO empowers individuals through education, training and building local marketplace opportunities as well as advocating for clean and safe sanitation facilities in both urban and rural areas across the globe. Breaking the silence on the sanitation crisis is at the heart of WTO’s efforts.

Through its initiatives, WTO continues to build the global sanitation movement, and provides an international platform for toilet associations, governments, academic institutions, foundations, UN agencies and corporate stakeholders to exchange knowledge and leverage media and corporate support in an effort to promote clean sanitation and public health policies. World Toilet Organization achieved special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 2013. Find out more about how we’re working to ensure a clean, safe toilet and sanitation for everyone, everywhere at all times by visiting www.worldtoilet.org.

2. ABOUT WORLD TOILET DAY

Every year on 19 November, UN World Toilet Day is a chance to get involved in the global movement for toilets and sanitation for all, and raise awareness of the need for action to end the sanitation crisis. World Toilet Organization has celebrated its founding day, 19 November, as World Toilet Day since 2001. On 24 July 2013, World Toilet Day was adopted by the United Nations as an official UN day. Each year focuses on different themes related to the global sanitation crisis. For instance the theme for UN World Toilet Day 2014 was dignity and equality, with a focus on inspiring action to end open defecation and putting a spotlight on how access to improved sanitation leads to a reduction in assault and violence on women.

4. FIVE SIMPLE STEPS TO SUCCESS

1. PICK AN IDEA If you love getting active, you could organise a sponsored ride or sports tournament. Perhaps social events are more your thing, so how about arranging a cheese and wine evening or bingo night? Or get crafty and bake cakes or make cards to sell. You’ll find lots of ideas and inspiration in this guide.

2. PLAN YOUR ACTIVITY Even the simplest activities need some planning and preparation. The better prepared you are, the more smoothly your activity will run, helping you to raise even more for WTO. Think about how you’re going to raise funds and what will work best for you. So if you’re putting on a social event, will you charge an entrance fee, or price drinks and nibbles individually?

3. PROMOTE YOUR FUNDRAISER Once the details are decided, it’s time to drum up lots of interest from your friends, family, workmates and all your social contacts! The more people you tell, the more people will participate, and the more donations you’ll be able to attract.

4. PAY IN YOUR MONEY Once the fundraising is over, it’s time to collect donations and send them to us. If you’ve raised funds online and directed people to make donations on WTO’s website through Paypal, Visa, Mastercard or Amex, then all donations will be sent directly to WTO. If you’ve collected donations yourself, then there are several ways you can pay us. (see page 8)

5. PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK All your hard work has paid off. The funds you’ve raised will help WTO continue their amazing work in global sanitation. Every dollar really does make a difference. Thank you so much for everything you’ve done.

5. PLANNING YOUR ACTIVITY

Some simple planning can mean the difference between an average event and a fantastic fundraiser.

WHO? Think about who you will be inviting to your activity and how you’ll do it. Don’t be afraid to ask friends, family and colleagues to help you. Use people’s skills (e.g. if you know someone who is great with social media ask them to help publicise your activity). Advertise for help from the local community or ask groups.

WHAT? Pick something you enjoy doing. Ask your friends, family and colleagues what they think about your idea. Keep it simple. If you’re stuck for ideas turn to our A-Z of fundraising. Aim to raise at least three times as much as you spend. List your costs and ask for a charity discount or a donation of goods from all your suppliers. Look at ways you can maximise the money you raise, such as holding a raffle at your activity or asking your employer to match your fundraising total.

WHERE? Where are you going to hold your fundraising activity? Indoors or outdoors? Do you need to plan a route or book a venue? If so, can you get one for free? Ask local schools and community centres. Make sure the venue can be accessed easily by public transport.

WHEN? Avoid clashes with local or national events. Write a plan and keep it updated. Allow enough time for any travel, accommodation or suppliers to be booked in cheaply.

WHY? Tell everyone why you are fundraising for sanitation, and about the great work that WTO does. Use blogs, social media and anything else you can think of to get the word out.

6. OUR FAVOURITE FUNDRAISING IDEAS

❖ The Big Squat: Organise a mass squat - in a public place - and take photos or video(s) to post online and share your Big Squat.

❖ Bake Sale: Include a cake decorating competition and have a bake off to find the star baker.

❖ Auction of promises: Can you offer a special skill or service? Why not auction it off for a day to the highest bidder ie haircuts, dog walking, personal training.

❖ Cycling: If cycling is your thing then speed off on a sponsored ride, static bike ride or spinathon at your local gym. Use it as your motivation to get fitter or learn a new skill. Get sponsored to do a coast-to coast ride or to cycle to work for a day, week or month.

❖ Fancy Dress: Make your day at work or school more interesting by having a fancy dress day. Have a simple non-uniform or dress down day, or go all out and introduce a theme. Ask everyone participating to make a donation.

❖ Night In: Swap a night out for a night in. Host a pyjama and pamper party and have an indoor board game marathon. Donate all the money you would have saved from going out to WTO.

❖ Quiz Night: Hold a quiz night and get everyone working their brains.

❖ Office Olympics: See how sporty your colleagues are! Charge a fee for entering activities such as pencil javelin or chair racing.

School Stars: Encourage your school to fundraise in a flush with fancy dress, cake bakes, sponsored car washes, and your own sanitation suggestions.

7. HOW TO PUBLICISE YOUR EVENT

Posters and flyers: Use these to advertise your activity locally on noticeboards. Ask shops, community centers, schools and churches to display them in their windows.

What’s on guides: Local newsletters and websites usually have a section listing events. Contact the editor and ask to be included.

Write a press release: The local media are often looking for stories about people who are doing extraordinary things in their community.

Social media: Promote your event on your favourite social media channels, from Facebook and Twitter to Instagram and Pinterest, making good use of any additional materials you’ve prepared, such as video and photos.

Write a blog: Try Wordpress or Blogger for a free blog. If you’re training for a challenge event, you could do a series of posts about your progress.

Email signature: Change your work, school or personal email signature to include a link to your or WTO’s website , its a great way of spreading the word.
