The New Glasgow Farmers Market was

founded in 2008 as Pictou County's Regional

Farmers Market. We started with 11 vendors

and today we are home to more than 130

vendors that join us throughout the year.

During the peak season, the New Glasgow

Farmers Market welcomes more than 1800

visitors per week. We are proud to be one of

the largest Farmers Markets in Nova Scotia!

OurHistory

Our very first market was held July 12 2008 at

Glasgow Square. It ran for three hours and

most of the 11 vendors sold out within the first

hour. That year we held a total of 12 markets.

By 2010, the Town of New Glasgow had

secured funding, with support from ACOA, the

other municipalities in Pictou County to build

our first permanent home along the river, what

is now know as "the dome". With this

permanent space we continued to grow with

an average of 34 vendors each week.

Once again running out of space, we

partnered with the Town of New Glasgow, the

Municipality of Pictou County and ACOA to

secure funding for a second and year round

building which opened in November of 2015.

OurVendors

The NGFM is now home to more than 130 small

businesses and entrepreneurs. These are

farmers, food producers, artisans and youth

vendors. Many of these businesses rely on the

Market as a significant part of their livelihood.

We offer a low cost, low-risk venue for start-ups

to test their products. Among other benefits,

vendors can enjoy immediate consumer

feedback and connect with the community

providing a valuable organic experience for those

who are getting started.

Currently, we have to rotate vendors or turn

vendors down in addition to limiting or all

together eliminating customer eating areas in

the winter months. This provides financial and

logistical barriers to some vendors and

inconvenience to our patrons.

OurFuture

WHY WE NEED A NEW BUILDING

A new, heated facility will allow more vendors

to earn an uninterrupted livelihood all year

round and provide our community with

increased access to the Market.

The new venue will have an indoor eating area

that can be utilized by Market visitors all year

round, will have an inspected kitchen and will

allow the potential to run programming

offered by other community organizations in

the shoulder seasons.

the lifespan of the dome will come to an

end and will need replacing, we need to

be proactive rather than reactive

we need more room to comfortably

accommodate vendors who wish to

attend all year round

more space will allow us the opportunity

to provide increased access to local food

& goods to our community

continue to provide a comfortable space

for the community to gather all-year

round

encourage farmers and food

producers to invest in year-round

production

increased positive impact on

community food security, healthy living

including mental and physical health

through social gathering during winter

months

increased community economic impact
