Annual Federal Research Priorities, Faculty Input Sought In order to better service the University's research efforts, the FSU Office of Federal Relations is developing an an-nual process to establish annual federal research priorities, as well as a process to handle research requests throughout the year. To accomplish this goal, we have developed a short web-based form for all faculty wishing to utilize the Office of Federal Relations. This form will help define and target University federal research activities and allow us to best help faculty to maximize their efforts. More Information.
NIH & AHRQ Announce Upcoming Changes to Policies, Instructions and Forms for 2016 Grant Applications The planned changes focus on multiple areas including rigor and transparency in research, vertebrate animals, inclusion reporting, data safety monitoring, research training, appendices, font requirements and biosketch clarifi-cations. The first phase of these updates will begin on or after January 25, 2016 and the second phase on or after May 25, 2016. More Information

FSU Council on Research and Creativity, Spring 2016 Grant Cycle - Updated Full-time faculty are eligible for these programs except where noted. Visiting professors will be considered eligible providing the sole reason for their “visiting” status is that they are awaiting permanent US residency.
The Council on Research and Creativity (CRC) has a new on-line submission portal, and new policies and procedures for grants. The process is now entirely electronic, but Med-RA review is still required. An information guide is now availa-ble at the Med-RA website. It is also recommended that you visit the CRC website for more information.

Thrasher Research Fund, E.W. “Al” Thrasher Awards The purpose of the E.W. "Al" Thrasher Awards is to improve children's health through medical research, with an empha-sis onprojects that have the potential to translate into clinically meaningful results within a few years. Ideal applications for the E.W. "Al" Thrasher Award address significant health problems that affect children in large numbers and offer the potential for practical solutions to these problems. Such solutions should be innovative and have the potential for broad applicability with low financial and/or technical barriers to implementation. Hypothesis-driven research is preferred over exploratory, hypothesis-generating research. Projects with a shorter distance to clinical applicability are given pri-ority. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. More Information.
American Asthma Foundation, 2016 Scholar Awards The American Asthma Foundation provides Scholar Awards exclusively to early- to mid-career scientists in the United States. The program supports work in all investigative fields that may reveal new pathways in the pathogenesis of asth-ma. Our goal is to understand the pathophysiology of asthma in order to define new targets for therapy. Studies may involve laboratory or clinical investigation, including genetic studies. Studies of humans are encouraged, but the AAF does not sponsor therapeutic trials. The deadline is two months earlier than in previous years to allow funded appli-cants to attend the AAF Annual Meeting in May 2016, before their work begins. JDRF, Overcoming Obstacles to Achieve Immune Tolerance in Type 1 Diabetes JDRF is soliciting letters of intent (LOI) for the identification of key barriers in the way of therapeutically restoring im-mune tolerance in type 1 diabetes (T1D) after the onset of autoimmunity (i.e., in at-risk autoantibody positive pre-diabetic, recent-onset diabetic, and established disease subjects). Such efforts are intended to support the ultimate goal of identifying targets, combination therapies, and treatment strategies for T1D. JDRF is committed to translation of research findings towards clinical results and is most interested in projects that have clinical translation potential. The letter of intent deadline is December 3, 2015. The full application deadline is March 2, 2016. More Information.
National Science Foundation, Smart and Connected Health (SCH) The goal of the Smart and Connected Health (SCH) Program is to accelerate the development and use of innovative ap-proaches that would support the much needed transformation of healthcare from reactive and hospital-centered to preventive, proactive, evidence-based, person-centered and focused on well-being rather than disease. Approaches that partner technology-based solutions with biobehavioral health research are supported by multiple agencies of the federal government including the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The purpose of this program is to develop next generation health care solutions and encourage existing and new research communities to focus on breakthrough ideas in a variety of areas of value to health, such as sensor technology, net-working, information and machine learning technology, decision support systems, modeling of behavioral and cognitive processes, as well as system and process modeling. The proposal deadline is December 10, 2015. More Information.

Breast Cancer Research Foundation, AACR Career Development Awards for Translational Breast Cancer Research
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation-AACR Career Development Awards for Translational Breast Cancer Research represent a joint effort to promote and support innovative research designed to accelerate the discovery, development, and application of new agents to treat breast cancer and/or for pre-clinical research with direct therapeutic intent. Eligi-bility is limited to junior faculty who, at the start of the grant term, will have completed their most recent doctoral de-gree or medical residency within the past 11 years. The research proposed for funding must be translational in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to breast cancer. The application deadline is December 15, 2015. More Information.
National Institutes of Health, BRAIN Initiative: Research Opportunities Using Invasive Neural Re-cording and Stimulating Technologies in the Human Brain (U01)
Invasive surgical procedures provide the unique ability to record and stimulate neurons within precisely localized brain structures in humans. Human studies using invasive technology are often constrained by a limited number of patients and resources available to implement complex experimental protocols and are rarely aggregated in a manner that ad-dresses research questions with appropriate statistical power. Therefore, this FOA seeks applications to assemble inte-grated, multi-disciplinary teams to overcome these fundamental barriers. Projects should investigate high-impact ques-tions in human neuroscience and disorders of the human nervous system. The research should be offered as experi-mental projects, or exploratory research and planning activities, for building teams, generating data and empirical results that will later compete for continued funding under new or ongoing FOAs of the BRAIN Initiative or under NIH Institute appropriations. National Blood Foundation, 2016 Grant Cycle
The National Blood Foundation (NBF), established in 1983, is a program of Advancing Transfusion and Cellular Therapies Worldwide (AABB) that distributes funding to support research and education in all aspects of blood banking, transfu-sion medicine, cellular therapies, and patient blood management. Important areas of research for the grant programs are immunology, hematology, immunohematology, infectious disease, cellular therapies, and patient blood manage-ment. The application deadline is December 31, 2015. More Information.
Wellcome Trust Fund, Collaborative Awards in Science
Collaboration promotes the development of new ideas and can bring disciplines together to speed the pace of discovery. The Wellcome Trust has therefore launched a new Collaborative Award scheme, supporting groups of researchers who are pursuing scientific problems. Collaborative awards provide flexible support to excellent groups of independent re-searchers with outstanding track records. Proposals must address important scientific problems that can only be achieved through a collaborative team effort. Applications that propose to carry out interdisciplinary research across our Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Innovations funding are encouraged. The preliminary application deadline is January 5, 2016. More Information.
PCORI, Engagement Award: Knowledge, Training, and Development, and Dissemination Awards
The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) plans to award $20.5 million in FY 2016 as part of the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards program. These awards support projects that encourage active integration of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders as integral members of the patient-centered outcomes research/clinical effectiveness research (PCOR/CER) enterprise. The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Promoting Research Opportunities for Latin American Biochemists
The long-term objective of this program is to foster cooperation between the Pan-American Association for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PABMB), the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) and the Ameri-can Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) that would benefit their members, trainees and science. Applications are welcomed from trainees and new investigators from all countries active in the Pan-American Society for Biochemistry, including Spain and Portugal. Specific objectives include:
(1) Creating the conditions to support students officially enrolled in Graduate Programs from countries active in the Pan-American Society for Biochemistry to spend short stays (1-6 months) in the laboratory of a scientist affiliated with AS-BMB, in order to develop part of his/her dissertation research work. The number of awards made per year will depend on the availability of funds.
(2) Creating the conditions to support postdoctoral fellows and new investigators from countries active in the Pan-American Society for Biochemistry (not more than 5 years past postdoctoral work) affiliated with PABMB (via their corre-sponding national societies) to work for 1-6 months in the laboratory of a scientist affiliated with ASBMB. The purpose of the support is for the fellows or new investigators to carry out experiments that require special techniques or exper-tise, or for other forms of scientific collaboration or advanced training. The number of awards made per year will de-pend on the availability of funds.

Children’s Discovery Institute, Large-Scale Interdisciplinary Research Initiatives
The Children’s Discovery Institute is a world-class center for pediatric research and innovation created to encourage re-searchers to ask bold questions and take bold risks to uncover answers. Large-Scale Interdisciplinary Research Initiatives provide funds for highly innovative and novel projects to teams of colleagues with differing areas of expertise who wish to pool their talents and resources to identify targets for improved diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of a pediatric health issue that is relevant to the goals of the CDI. Projects proposed as part of the initiative should be thematically integrated and synergistic and should ultimately lead to the procurement of other extramural support. Large-Scale Inter-disciplinary Research Initiatives are more complex in scope and budget than Interdisciplinary Research Initiatives and are almost always Multiple PI projects. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Making Health Care Safer in Ambulatory Care Settings and Long Term Care Facilities (R01)
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is to support investigative research projects that examine the epidemiology of patient safety in ambulatory care settings and long term care facilities, gather evidence about strategies that can improve safety in these settings, and develop evidence-based tools to facilitate implementation of these strate-gies. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Outstanding New Environmental Scientist (ONES) Award (R01)
The Outstanding New Environmental Scientist (ONES) Award is intended to identify the most talented Early Stage Investi-gators (ESIs) who intend to make a long-term commitment to research in the Environmental Health Sciences and assist them in launching an innovative research program focused on the understanding of environmental exposure effects on people’s health. From any on-campus computer, go to http://pivot.cos.com. FSU’s IP addresses will be recognized by Pivot, so you can start searching for funding opportunities right away. Creating a Pivot account is easy, at the website click “Sign up” in the upper right corner. Once registered, you can log in with a Pivot username and password anytime, anywhere. Log-ging in allows you to manage active or tracked funding opportunities, save searches, share opportunities, and search for potential collaborators. Username and password access is necessary when a) you are off-campus, or b) when you want to save a funding record or funding search.

UCLA Graduate & Postdoctoral Extramural Support (GRAPES) Database This database catalogs extramural funding opportunities of interest to students and postdoctoral scholars. It contains information on over 500 private and publicly funded awards, fellowships, and internships. Access the database through the GRAPES Search Form.
FSU Office of Postdoctoral Affairs Part of The Florida State University's Graduate School, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) serves as a central re-source and information conduit for all postdoctoral researchers as well as faculty and staff who work with postdoctoral researchers at FSU. The OPA publishes a weekly digest. Additionally, FSU is a sustaining member of the National Postdoc-toral Association, giving all postdocs at FSU Affiliate Membership in the NPA. More Information.
Research Fellowships for Medical Students
Many medical schools and institutions offer programs for medical students who are interested in exploring research as part of their career. Fellowships and scholarly programs are offered in summers or year-long programs. Fourth and fifth year medical students can also participate in research electives. More Information.

SUBMITTING PROPOSALS FOR GRANTS AND CONTRACTS

Help us help you! The sooner you let us know of your intent to submit a proposal for extramural funding, the sooner we can help you navigate the paths to a successful submission. Our goals are to assist you with the CoM requirements and those of FSU Sponsored Research Administration (SRA), or in the case of private funding, the FSU Research Foundation (FSURF), minimize the administrative burden, and meet sponsor guidelines in a seamless, integrated fashion.
SRA/FSURF requires "complete" proposals three business days in advance of the sponsor’s deadline. If you contact us at least 30 days in advance, together we can identify, gather, or create the elements/components, then assemble the application by the SRA/FSURF deadline for institutional approval. The goal is to have, in hand, no later than 10 business days before the sponsor’s deadline, all the elements needed to assemble the components for a complete proposal for SRA/FSURF. Piecemeal in advance of this goal is appropriate and encouraged.
Please note that generally our office works on a first in, first out basis, so let’s minimize "PTSD" (Proposal Tragedies, Shock and Dysfunction), while meeting the FSU three-day institutional approval deadline for a “complete” proposal!
