Quality Management forPersonal and Organizational Growth

(December 2-4, 2013)

Programme Co-ordinator:Prof. Hitesh Bhatt

Too many people accept scrap, rework, delays, and missed deadlines asnormal. This attitude can be changed, if managers are motivated to paymore attention to the systems and processes, for which they areresponsible. A process essentially transforms inputs into outputs, someof which are desirable and some not. In order to ensure that we havemore desired outputs and fewer rejects and products requiring re-work,we will have to shift the focus from managing the end product tomanaging the processes that deliver a product.

The process management approach appreciates variations in people(person to person and within person from time to time), variations inbought-out and in-process materials, variat ions in machinery andequipment, variations in methods, variations in environment – bothphysical and psychological – and variations in measurement systems. The goal of process management is to break down an organization’sactivities into processes and monitor them in order to align them withits strategic goal of remaining competitive. Understanding the conceptsof quality management can possibly help a person lead a better life asone can undergo a paradigm shift (personal transformation) whilelooking at everything around one’s self.

Corporate Social Responsibilityand Development

(December 18-20, 2013)

Programme Co-ordinator:Prof. Nivedita Kothiyal

Background

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been on the horizon for morethan five decades now. It has expanded immensely in recent years, andhas mutated so fundamentally that the newer developments in the fieldhave been labeled variously as ‘Modern CSR’ or ‘Contemporary CSR’.The ‘new ’ CSR has been fuel led by the forces of global izat ion, liberalization, and privatization. It is, more often, led and shaped by acompetitive spirit and prompts proactive action. It has scaled itself fromlocal to global and includes multiple actors like MNCs, Civil SocietyOrganizations, and the State. The contemporary focus is on whether, through CSR development, challenges can be met and issues such asenvironment and climate change, social welfare, global poverty, humanrights, and labour standards be addressed. At the level of a firm, thebusiness case for conducting a CSR is often made by invoking argumentsrelated to enhanced competitive advantage, good corporate reputation, positive investor relations and more l icence to operate, better staffattraction, retention, and morale. On the other hand, this spurt in the‘new’ CSR has been linked with the advent and spread of Neoliberalism. The business case of doing CSR has been critiqued on grounds of beingmerely a public relations tool to enhance the company image. The failureto provide any guidance in conflictual interest situations such as corelabour rights including freedom of association, rights of indigenouscommunities in case of extractive industries, and the absence of gender, class and race issues in CSR initiatives, are other significant lines ofcritiques.
