FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ICT ENTRY 1, 2 AND 3 SPECIMEN ASSESSMENT MATERIALS 12

The following notes outline arrangements for the conduct of the controlled assessment for the ** examination series for Entry 1. 1. Timing of the Controlled Assessment • The Controlled Assessments are timetabled to start on or after **. • For Entry 1 there is a minimum time limit of one hour and maximum time limit of two

hours to complete the tasks. • The Functional Skills Entry Level Controlled Assessment can be timetabled at the

discretion of the centre within the assessment window (* – *). It can be broken into smaller sections if necessary, but the total time should not exceed two hours.

• The subject teacher should invigilate the whole of the Controlled Assessment and collect

relevant evidence to support candidates’ performance. • Centres are asked to keep a log of attendance throughout the Controlled Assessment. • Candidates may not need all the specified time, but special consideration will not

normally be given for candidates who do not complete in the full time available to them. • Once candidates sign that they have completed the assessment (declaration form) they

should not be allowed to revise any submitted work. • All candidates’ work should be submitted to the Internal Assessor examiner by *. 2. Preparation for the Controlled Assessment • A computer capable of running software should be made available to each candidate to

enable them to meet the requirements of the assessment. The equipment must be fit for purpose and must be checked by a competent person before use.

• Teachers/assessors must ensure computers are switched off and that candidates switch

on their own computers and are aware of safety procedures (using password, adjusting seat, monitor etc). If teachers/assessor assist candidates at this stage, this must be declared on the mark sheet and credit must not been given.

• The information needed to complete the assessment is contained in an email which

should be sent to the candidate prior to the assessment. The assessment tasks are designed so that they can be used as they are or centres can contextualise or adapt them to best-suit their centre-specific circumstances. Centres can changed or adapt the context to best suit the candidate. However, the context must be set within a real-life context and have a given purpose. The italics in the email can be adapted if necessary. For example, your school could be arranging a talent show, sports event, etc. The wording of the email can be adapted to ensure that the learner is not disadvantaged.

• It is advisable for assessors to familiarise themselves with the Functional Skills

standards at Entry 1, the assessment and mark scheme before beginning the assessment with candidates.

• A copy of the poster (which has been provided electronically) should be loaded on the

computer for the candidate to use during the assessment. (It is not a requirement at Entry 1 for candidates to open files.)

Page 13: FUNCTIONAL SKILLS INFORMATION AND …wjec.co.uk/uploads/publications/11000.pdf · Entry 1 sample assessment materials 3 Entry 2 sample assessment materials 21 ... wording of the email

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ICT ENTRY 1, 2 AND 3 SPECIMEN ASSESSMENT MATERIALS 13

3. During the Controlled Assessment • Centres can deliver the assessment in a way best suited to the candidate. • Candidates will be required to find information and solve problems embedded within the

email sent. Assessors may wish to print the email or poster during the assessment as a reference for candidates.

• Assessors may give support and guidance to learners. This support and guidance

should focus on ensuring that learners understand what is expected of them. It is not acceptable for assessors to provide model answers or to work through answers in detail.

• Assessors must declare any assistance given in the comments column on the mark

sheets. Marks must not be awarded in these cases. Teachers/assessors may adapt the questions to suit candidates but should not be in such a way that direction is given.

• Assessors should observe the learner during the assessment to be able to complete the

mark sheet. The mark sheet with assessor’s comments and the evidence produced by the learner should be collated. Such evidence could be screen shots, printouts, saved files, witness statements. Candidates’ work can be annotated if necessary. An exemplar mark sheet can be found in the WJEC Functional Skills ICT Entry 1 Specimen Assessment Materials document or in Appendix 2 of the WJEC Functional Skills ICT Entry 1Specification document.

• Candidates should not access their work outside the timetabled sessions. • Candidates can use software help files where appropriate. Spell check tools can be

turned on. • Candidates and teachers must complete and sign the declaration sheet provided by

WJEC to confirm that they switched on the computer themselves and that they have followed recommended safety practices (using passwords, adjusting seating, monitor, etc).

4. Marking the Controlled Assessment The Controlled Assessment should be marked for all candidates and the marks entered on the mark sheets provided. Teachers should write brief comments and note what evidence supports candidates’ performance on the mark sheets where appropriate. An exemplar of a candidates mark sheet can be found WJEC Functional Skills ICT Entry 1 Specimen Assessment Materials document or in Appendix 2 of the WJEC Functional Skills ICT Entry 1 Specification document. Candidates require 12 marks of out a possible 16 (75%) in order to achieve the Entry 1 qualification.

Page 14: FUNCTIONAL SKILLS INFORMATION AND …wjec.co.uk/uploads/publications/11000.pdf · Entry 1 sample assessment materials 3 Entry 2 sample assessment materials 21 ... wording of the email

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ICT ENTRY 1, 2 AND 3 SPECIMEN ASSESSMENT MATERIALS 14

5. Sampling Procedures After the completion of the assessment session, the work will be marked internally according to mark schemes/assessment criteria provided by WJEC. Candidates may see their marked work but it is important that the work is kept securely in the teacher/assessor’s possession to prevent any tampering with it. Moderation/Verification will take place at two levels:

1. Within the centre to ensure that a uniform standard has been applied across the teaching groups. There must be opportunities to exchange work/view candidates’ performances and discuss the criteria during the assessment window: significant differences in the application of criteria and hence in rank-ordering will be difficult to resolve at the final stage of assessment. One person must take responsibility for the final moderation procedure within a centre, sampling the work of each teaching group.

2. Through the inspection of a sample of the work by WJEC moderators/verifiers. For

Entry 1 the sample will be selected according to the table below, based on the centre’s overall rank order. Further details can be found in the Controlled Assessment Manual, which will be sent to centres. For entries of up to 10 candidates, all controlled assessments will be sent. Further samples of controlled assessment will be sent to the moderator/verifier if required. WJEC reserves the right to call in all of a centre’s controlled assessments if this proves necessary.

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ICT ENTRY 1, 2 AND 3 SPECIMEN ASSESSMENT MATERIALS 15

N.B. In addition, the following points should be considered in selecting the sample: (i) Each teaching group should be represented. (ii) Where there are several candidates on a particular mark these will count towards the

total number in calculating the rank order, but normally only one candidate's work on a particular mark will be submitted.

(iii) Work submitted should where possible meet the full requirements of the

specification; i.e. candidates who have not completed of the controlled assessment should not be included, but be replaced by that of the nearest candidate (either higher or lower) with a complete controlled assessment.

Where the moderation process reveals serious problems in any centre, with regards to interpretation and/or implementation of the assessment criteria, WJEC will request further work or take other appropriate action to safeguard candidates’ interests. The marks for the sample must be inserted on the Sample Form and centres must indicate the total number of candidates entered at Entry 1. 6. Submission of candidates’ work to the External Moderator • Candidate’s work should show clearly the centre and candidate number and name. • Selected candidate’s work (which can include saved files, printouts, screenshots, witness

statements), Mark Sheets together with the Sample Form and all candidates’ declaration forms should be received by the moderator by *.

• The attendance register should be submitted with the candidates’ work. • Centres are required to keep backup copies of candidates’ work. If submission of completed assessments presents a problem, please contact Betsan Jones (029 2026 5318 [email protected]) or Chris Quinn (029 2026 5128 [email protected]) for advice. 7. Return of Work Work for this subject will not be returned to centres unless specifically requested, in which case an addressed label should be included in the sample sent for moderation

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ICT ENTRY 1, 2 AND 3 SPECIMEN ASSESSMENT MATERIALS 36

The following notes outline arrangements for the conduct of the controlled assessment for the ** examination series for Entry 2. 1. Timing of the Controlled Assessment • The Controlled Assessments are timetabled to start on or after ** .

• For Entry 2, there is a minimum time limit of one hour and maximum time limit of two

hours to complete the tasks.

• The Functional Skills Entry Level Controlled Assessments can be timetabled at the discretion of the centre within the assessment window (* – *). The assessment can be broken into smaller sections if necessary, but the total time should not exceed two hours.

• The subject teacher may invigilate the whole of the Controlled Assessment and collect relevant evidence to support candidates’ performance.

• Centres are asked to keep a log of attendance throughout the Controlled Assessment.

• Candidates may not need all the specified time, but special consideration will not normally be given for candidates who do not complete in the full time available to them.

• Once candidates sign that they have completed the assessment (declaration form) they should not be allowed to revise any submitted work.

• Teachers/assessors must ensure computers are switched off and that candidates switch on their own computers and are aware of safety procedures (using password, adjusting seat, monitor etc). If teachers/assessor assist candidates at this stage, this must be declared on the mark sheet and credit must not been given.

• The assessment tasks are designed so that they can be used as they are or centres can contextualise or adapt them to best-suit their centre-specific circumstances. Centres can change or adapt the context to best suit the candidate. However, the context must be set within a real-life context and have a given purpose. The italics in the assessment can be adapted if necessary. For example, your school could be arranging a talent show, sports event, etc.

• It is advisable for assessors to familiarise themselves with the Functional Skills standards at Entry 2, the assessment and mark scheme before beginning the assessment with candidates.

• A copy of the fact sheet (which has been provided electronically) should be loaded on the computer for the candidate to use during the assessment. (It is not a requirement at Entry 2 for candidates to open files.)

Page 37: FUNCTIONAL SKILLS INFORMATION AND …wjec.co.uk/uploads/publications/11000.pdf · Entry 1 sample assessment materials 3 Entry 2 sample assessment materials 21 ... wording of the email

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ICT ENTRY 1, 2 AND 3 SPECIMEN ASSESSMENT MATERIALS 37

3. During the Controlled Assessment

• Centres can deliver the assessment in a way best suited to the candidate.

• Teachers/assessors may adapt the questions to suit candidates but should not be in such a way that direction is given.

An exemplar mark sheet can be found in the WJEC Functional Skills ICT Entry 2 Specimen Assessment Materials document.

• During the assessment it is necessary for the assessor to save files on behalf of the

candidate. (It is not a requirement at Entry 2 for candidates to open files.) • Candidates should not access their work outside the timetabled sessions. • Candidates can use software help files where appropriate. Spell check tools can be

turned on. • Candidates must work independently and the work submitted must be their own work. • Candidates and teachers must complete and sign the declaration sheet provided by

WJEC to confirm that they themselves switched on the computer and that they have followed recommended safety practices (using passwords, adjusting seating, monitor, etc).

4. Marking the Controlled Assessment

The Controlled Assessment should be marked for all candidates and the marks entered on the mark sheets provided. Teachers should write brief comments and note what evidence supports candidates’ performance on the mark sheets where appropriate. An exemplar of a candidate’s mark sheet can be found WJEC Functional Skills ICT Entry 2 Specimen Assessment Materials document. Candidates require 21 marks of out a possible 28 (75%) in order to achieve the Entry 2 qualification.

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ICT ENTRY 1, 2 AND 3 SPECIMEN ASSESSMENT MATERIALS 38

For

Entry 2 the sample will be selected according to the table below, based on the centre’s overall rank order.

Total no. of candidates

Work to be submitted (Numbers relate to rank order)

1 - 10 All

11 - 19 1st and every second (1, 3, 5, 7 etc.) plus the lowest scoring folder and additional folders as necessary (reflecting the spread of marks) to make a total sample of 10

20 - 45 1st and every fifth (1, 6, 11, 16 etc.) plus the lowest scoring folder and additional folders as necessary (reflecting a spread of marks) to make a total sample of 10

46 - 99 1st and every eleventh (1, 12, 23, 34 etc.) plus the lowest scoring folder and additional folders as necessary (reflecting a spread of marks) to make a total sample of 10

100 - 199 1st and every fourteenth (1, 15, 29, 43 etc.) plus the lowest scoring folder and additional folders as necessary (reflecting a spread of marks) to make a total sample of 15

200 - 299 1st and every fifteenth (1, 16, 31, 46 etc.) plus the lowest scoring folder and additional folders as necessary (reflecting spread of marks) to make a total sample of 25

Over 300 1st and every twentieth (1, 21, 41, 61 etc.) plus the lowest scoring folder and additional folders as necessary (reflecting spread of marks) to make a total sample of 25

Clearly indicate on the Sample Form (**) the total number of candidates entered.

Page 39: FUNCTIONAL SKILLS INFORMATION AND …wjec.co.uk/uploads/publications/11000.pdf · Entry 1 sample assessment materials 3 Entry 2 sample assessment materials 21 ... wording of the email

N.B. In addition, the following points should be considered in selecting the sample: (i) Each teaching group should be represented. (ii) Where there are several candidates on a particular mark these will count towards the

total number in calculating the rank order, but normally only one candidate's work on a particular mark will be submitted.

(iii) Work submitted should where possible meet the full requirements of the

specification; i.e. candidates who have not completed all three components should not be included, but be replaced by that of the nearest candidate (either higher or lower) with complete controlled assessment.

Where the moderation process reveals serious problems in any centre, with regards to interpretation and/or implementation of the assessment criteria, WJEC will request further work or take other appropriate action to safeguard candidates’ interests. The marks for the sample must be inserted on the Sample Form and centres must indicate the total number of candidates entered at Entry 2.

7. Return of Work Work for this subject will not be returned to centres unless specifically requested, in which case an addressed label should be included in the sample sent for moderation.

Scenario Your head teacher has decided to arrange a Recycling Day. He has sent your ICT class this email asking for help.

From: “Mr Alan Davies” <[email protected]> Subject: Recycling day Date: 16 March 2010 17:10:14 BST To: “ICT Department” <[email protected]> __________________________________________________________________________________

Hi

Thanks for agreeing to help with the Recycling Day.

I would like you to:

• do some research to find an image and some information for a

presentation to advertise the Recycling Day;

• make a presentation to advertise the Recycling Day ;

• use the ‘Recycling Calculator’ to work out how many items have

been recycled;

• email me to let me know how many items were recycled.

A CD will be given to you by your teacher to help you.

Mr Alan Davies

Headteacher

Task 2 Research (4 marks) Use a search engine to find one recycling image and some information on recycling from the internet for the presentation. Task 3 Presentation (25 marks) (a) Make a presentation to be shown in the school’s reception to make pupils want to take part in the Recycling Day. It should have two slides that include:

• A suitable title. • The image you found on the internet.

• Information about the day including: o Venue - School Main Hall o Date – Friday 16th July 2010 o Time – 10am to 3pm

• One fact from the factsheet.

• Any other information on recycling you have found from the

internet.

Your presentation should make pupils want to take part in the Recycling

Day, so remember to use text features such as font style, font size,

colour and layout tools etc to make the information in your presentation

stand out.

Check your presentation for any mistakes and correct them. (b) Save your presentation.

The following notes outline arrangements for the conduct of the controlled assessment for the ** examination series for Entry 3. 1. Timing of the Controlled Assessment • The Controlled Assessments are timetabled to start on or after ** . • For Entry 3, there is a minimum time limit of one hour and maximum time limit of two

hours to complete the tasks. • The Functional Skills Entry Level Controlled Assessments can be timetabled at the

discretion of the centre within the assessment window (* – *). The assessment can be broken into smaller sections if necessary, but the total time should not exceed two hours.

• The subject teacher may invigilate the whole of the Controlled Assessment and collect

relevant evidence to support candidates’ performance.

• The assessment tasks are designed so that they can be used as they are or centres can

contextualise or adapt them to best-suit their centre-specific circumstances. Centres can changed or adapt the context to best suit the candidate. However, the context must be set within a real-life context and have a given purpose. The italics in the assessment can be adapted if necessary. For example, your school could be arranging a talent show, sports event, etc.

• It is advisable for assessors to familiarise themselves with the Functional Skills

standards at Entry 3, the assessment, the files supplied and mark scheme before beginning the assessment with candidates.

• Each candidate should start the assessment with a ‘clean’ user area or removable,

recordable storage device. • Two electronic files are supplied with the assessment FACTSHEET and

RECYCLE CALCULATOR. These files should be loaded onto a CD, usb or other removable storage device and given to the candidate to use during the assessment. Guidance should not be given how to insert the removable media as this is a requirement of the task.

Page 67: FUNCTIONAL SKILLS INFORMATION AND …wjec.co.uk/uploads/publications/11000.pdf · Entry 1 sample assessment materials 3 Entry 2 sample assessment materials 21 ... wording of the email

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ICT ENTRY 1, 2 AND 3 SPECIMEN ASSESSMENT MATERIALS 67

3. During the Controlled Assessment • Centres can deliver the assessment in a way best suited to the candidate.

An exemplar mark sheet can be found in the WJEC Functional Skills ICT Entry 3 Specimen Assessment Materials or Appendix 2 of the WJEC Functional Skills ICT Entry 3 Specification documents.

• Candidates should not access their work outside the timetabled sessions. • If removable media are used, these should be given to candidates at the start of each

assessment session and returned to the supervising teacher at the end of each session. • Candidates can use software help files where appropriate. Spell check tools can be

turned on. • Candidates and teachers must complete and sign the declaration sheet provided by

WJEC to confirm that they themselves switched on the computer and that they have followed recommended safety practices (using passwords, adjusting seating, monitor, etc).

4. Marking the Controlled Assessment The Controlled Assessment should be marked for all candidates and the marks entered on the mark sheets provided. Teachers should write brief comments and note what evidence supports candidates’ performance on the mark sheets where appropriate. An exemplar of a candidate’s mark sheet can be found WJEC Functional Skills ICT Entry 3 Specimen Assessment Materials or Appendix 2 of the WJEC Functional Skills ICT Entry 3 Specification documents. Candidates require 33 marks of out a possible 45 (75%) in order to achieve the Entry 3 qualification.

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ICT ENTRY 1, 2 AND 3 SPECIMEN ASSESSMENT MATERIALS 68

For

Entry 3 the sample will be selected according to the table below, based on the centre’s overall rank order.

Total no. of candidates

N.B. In addition, the following points should be considered in selecting the sample: (i) Each teaching group should be represented. (ii) Where there are several candidates on a particular mark these will count towards the

total number in calculating the rank order, but normally only one candidate's work on a particular mark will be submitted.

(iii) Work submitted should where possible meet the full requirements of the

specification; i.e. candidates who have not completed all of the controlled assessment should not be included, but be replaced by that of the nearest candidate (either higher or lower) with complete controlled assessment.

Where the moderation process reveals serious problems in any centre, with regards to interpretation and/or implementation of the assessment criteria, WJEC will request further work or take other appropriate action to safeguard candidates’ interests. The marks for the sample must be inserted on the Sample Form and centres must indicate the total number of candidates entered at Entry 3.

7. Return of Work Work for this subject will not be returned to centres unless specifically requested, in which case an addressed label should be included in the sample sent for moderation.
