Learning to Talk B ecause I’m fairly grown up now, I’m not offended but bemused when people talk about the ability to communicate effectively as a “soft skill,” which I think is supposed to mean it’s important but not entirely critical to the work force we are preparing our students to enter. Given our mission to prepare students for adult life, citizenship and professional life in a diverse and changing world, communication skills are essential to both professional, healthy communities and personal happiness. Lack of communication, often the result of lack of communication skill, can both spark and contribute to conflict. As it turns out, communication is actually pretty hard. I’m not even going to talk about the kind of communications essential to personal relationships, though I think emotional intelligence, empathy and, yes, love are essential conditions across the board for effective and productive communication. As for the workplace, I’d just make a plea for choosing words and modes of communication wisely and thoughtfully. I’m most concerned right now about how we communicate as members of a community. We are in the midst of a contentious election campaign, the consequences of which are very significant, not just for the country, but for a world that looks to us as its leading power. But can we even talk with one another about our intentions come Election Day on November 8, unless we know, or are pretty sure, how the other person feels? In our highly polarized social and political environment, I am especially proud of our Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE), which does a great job of programming events that are non-partisan, yet illuminate the issues. Through our Civic Engagement Across the Curriculum program (CEAC), PACE also fosters citizenship education in courses being taught across the university. We have to instill in our students the ability to discuss the issues that face us as a community: inequalities, racism and discrimination of all kinds, poverty, violence and the environment. Most of our students are young adults, taking up, for the first time, the full responsibilities of citizenship, notably in this big and powerful democracy. We are working with them at a particularly formative time in their lives, so this is necessary and important work. Yet barriers remain, including ones we create for ourselves in an effort to avoid discomfort or because we are afraid of saying something offensive. The currency of terms, such as microaggressions, trigger warnings and safe spaces, on some college campuses can make us defensive and uncommunicative when we really need to be courageous and open-minded. But if we can explore these terms a bit, I think we can understand our communication issues better. Of the three, microaggression resonates with me most readily. The term has been around since the early 1970s, coined initially to describe the more subtle insults and putdowns of African-Americans by non- African-Americans – more meaning that our society was and is not yet free of less subtle insults and putdowns. That date is significant, in that it suggests the influence of the civil rights movement on our language and culture, revealing the very casual ways in which we revealed our unexamined individual or collective prejudices through words or clichéd concepts, unquestioningly received and thoughtlessly perpetuated. No one is immune to such slights. Given my own ethnic origins, I would note the pejorative sense of “Dutch courage” or “Dutch treat.” The particular prejudice that gave rise to those terms is a thing of the past, but it’s still an example of how language can encode prejudice. It hurts a little more when the slight, however slight, corresponds to an enduring problem, such as structural racism. So microaggressions are real, but the “micro” part of the word cautions us not to overreact. Each year educators from around thecountry bring their students to compete inwhat has been unofficially described as the

“Glass Olympics,” … except, not quite. As described by Marc Petrovic, artist and head

of the glass program at the Cleveland Institute ofArt where this year’s games were held: “Imagineall of the training, skill and perfection achieved byOlympic athletes. Then think of the exactopposite. That’s the Glass Games.” This year, for the first time, students from the

SU glass program took part in the Games with acontingent of 12 other excited, but nervous,teams of students on September 17. Rather than focusing on technical skills that

would favor just a few, the Games is aboutcreative problem solving, teamwork and havingfun. The events, planned by supervising facultythe night before the Games began, are designedto allow students to test their knowledge of glass,learn about its history as an artistic medium and,most importantly, develop relationships with theirpeers and with professors from other schools.With 13 schools in attendance, the atmosphere

of friendly competition on the day of the Gameswas palpable. The events ranged from artistic totechnical, each with their own challenging twist. In the hot glass studio, the various schools

competed to see which school’s gaffer (leadglassblower) could make a cup to a specified size

in the least amount oftime. The twist – thegaffer wasn’t allowed totouch the floor whileworking. Thismodification of thepopular childhoodgame of “the floor islava” resulted instudents carrying theirgaffers “supermanstyle,” linking theirhands together to forma human chariot tocarry their gaffer andsliding the “gaffer’sbench” around theshop to variouslocations in order tomake their cups. Because of the

elevated aspect of thechallenge, whenselecting the participating gaffer, teams wereforced to decide between their best glassblowerand their lightest. In the case of case of BallState University, the gaffer was a beginningstudent who had only worked with glass forthree weeks and had never before blown glass.This was just one of the scenarios that make

the Games such an unforgettable event for thestudents. In another room, students used metalscoops to toss two-thousand degree blobs of glasstowards a “corn-hole” style game board, whilenearby, other students bent tubes into crazy strawswith torches, scoring points for the most bendsand loops. During the lunch break, Henry Halem,

professor emeritus of Kent State University andauthor of Glass Notes: A Reference Guide for the GlassArtist, who is one of the founding leaders in theAmerican Studio Glass Movement, delivered apersonal and firsthand account detailing thehistory of the Studio Glass Movement. Studentswere captivated by his recounting of the historyof the medium that led to how the material isused artistically today. The final (and as it turned out, decisive)

event of the day was a pop quiz based onHalem’s lecture.At the final tally, Salisbury University students

placed third in the overall standings, competingagainst some of the best glass programs in thecountry. Alfred University took first place and theOhio State University came in second.

The Communication Arts Departmenthosted international journalists fromthe Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship

Program on September 22. Meeting in the beautiful University House,

Humphrey Fellows from India, Pakistan,Tanzania, Latvia, South Africa, Mexico,Turkey, Nepal and Paraguay shared thechallenges journalists face in their homecountries with freshman students fromCMAT’s Living Learning Community underthe direction of Dr. Chrys Egan and membersof SU’s English Language Center. The Fellows also toured Conway Hall’s

media facilities, attended a luncheon withDean Maarten Pereboom and CMAT ChairBryan Horikami and heard a presentation byDelmarva Public Radio’s Program DirectorChris Ranck and News Director Don Roeck. The Humphrey Fellows are based at the

University of Maryland College Park andspend a year in the United States studyingour country’s mass media, political and socialsystems. Salisbury University has been anassociate campus partner for the HumphreyFellows Program since 2010 and is overseenby CMAT Associate Professor David Burns.

with the expectation that our students andcolleagues want to do the right thing. And, while we do need to watch our

language, we also need to be able to speakopenly, honestly and courageously about difficultissues we are struggling to understand. Withrespect to those difficult conversations, “triggerwarnings” and “safe spaces” present a differentchallenge. We of course have our own terrificSafe Space program here at SU that trainsmembers of our community to be supportive ofindividuals working through issues of sexualorientation. That program should never beconfused with the idea of creating a “safe space”to shelter college students from uncomfortablesubjects. While kindness and good sense promptus to think carefully about how we engagestudents to explore the harsher realities of thehuman condition, they are adults and they arelargely beyond needing to be sheltered fromthose realities. It can happen that a particular

topic collides with an individual traumaticpersonal experience and that some comforting,counselling or accommodation is appropriate. Ialso would expect that individuals who haveexperienced violence or assault would appreciatethat the larger problems are being studied andaddressed, even if we have to give them a pass.But we don’t want warning labels to steerstudents away from tough subjects – or, worse, togive any presenter, speaker or writer license to beoffensive on the grounds that “I warned you.”Cedric Johnson, who lectured recently about

policing and race in contemporary America asthe third lecturer in our Multiple Dimensions ofInequality series, ever so gently expressed to afull house a heads up that he might raise somepoints that audience members might findchallenging or controversial. I thought he did anexcellent job of analyzing the problems thatsurround incidents such as we have seen inFerguson, Charlotte, Tulsa and so many places,

but the solutions he suggested were smart,strategic and founded in the belief that we haveto find consensus across the divisions that plagueus. To the degree that he presented controversialideas, he did so in a way that was reasoned andmindful of his audience.We don’t want an environment in which we

avoid tough subjects because they make usuncomfortable. If comfort is what we seek, wewill never learn. We can be thankful that most ofour students have grown up in relative safety andprosperity (though not all), and they have boththe opportunity and privilege to be educated asfree and responsible adults. Privilege, in fact, is something we need to

understand better. But, in addition to the skillswe list as critical to success in a knowledge-basedeconomy, we can add perseverance, courage andgrit. With that, and a little love, we can reachout of our comfort zones to communicateeffectively on the issues that face us.

The Philosophy Department held its 36th annual symposium, a free, day-longdialogue open to all students, alumni and

the public, on April 23. During the past 36 years, the department has

welcomed noted speakers from various fieldswithin philosophy to campus in order to addresstopics, such as freedom and responsibility, capitalpunishment, health care, happiness and suffering,and the potential extinction of life on our planet. The main aim of the symposium is to

showcase philosophy to the wider community, toallow current students and faculty to be exposedto the thoughts of some of the leading experts inthe discipline and to generate lively discussionthroughout the day.This year’s symposium was titled “Justice

Inside-Out: On Incarceration and Inequality.”During the morning session, Dr. Lisa Guenther(Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy,Vanderbilt University) and Dr. Rashad Shabazz(Associate Professor, School of SocialTransformation, Arizona State University) laidout their arguments in favor of justice reform.They discussed some of the underlyingphilosophical questions in the political discourseon imprisonment, such as “What is the purpose ofpunishment?” “Does imprisonment serve justice,and if so in what sense?” or “What does it mean

for a punishment to fit the crime?” In particular, both speakers highlighted ways

in which our understanding of punishment andimprisonment are shaped by, and can beobscured by, assumptions about race, history andeconomic inequality.In the afternoon, SU alumna Shauna Lee

(State Attorney’s Office), Sarah Little (Office ofthe Public Defender), June Brittingham (Librarianat the Maryland Eastern Correctional Institution)and SU alumnus Joe Compofelice (trial lawyer)shared some of their experiences with thecriminal justice system and invited the audience ofabout 70 people to participate in the discussion.This year also marked the 15th anniversary of

the Philosophy Department’s EasternCorrectional Institution (ECI) Book DiscussionGroup program. To mark the occasion, MarylandState Senator Jim Mathias and Delegate CarlAnderton (Maryland House of Delegates)presented the program with special citations fromthe Maryland Senate and House of Delegates. Every semester, the department organizes

groups of SU students to engage in bookdiscussions at the ECI in Princess Anne. As partof the symposium, the main speakers conducted abook discussion group at the ECI together withSU students and Dr. Jill Stauffer (HaverfordCollege, PA) one day before the main event.

36th SU Philosophy Symposium PACE ElectionEvents: SquawkThe Vote!PACE has sponsored a variety of election

events this semester to educate peopleabout the issues and candidates, facilitate

voter registration and encourage the use ofabsentee ballots for students who do not live locally. Steve Shepard of POLITICO gave an insidelook at political polling and the power ofyounger voters to sway the results of this andfuture presidential elections in September. Close to 200 students packed into Perdue Hall’sBennett Family Auditorium to watch the firstpresidential debate on September 26. Dr. AdamHoffman used an instant polling program to askquestions in real-time. Students weighed in usingtheir smartphones, and the responses wereprojected immediately. PACE has trained more than 30 studentvoting assistants who have been staffing votingtables on campus, as well as presenting to classesand organizations. Another election season offering is thePolitical Discourse Series, “Keeping Your CoolWhen Discussing Hot Issues,” whichencourages a different kind of dialogue aboutthe issues that matter. The College Democrats and CollegeRepublicans host “Election Forum: Discussingthe Issues” 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, inPerdue Hall 156. Fulton Faculty SabbaticalProjects • Fall 2016Vinita Agarwal, CMATThe proposed sabbatical project will extend Dr. Agarwal’s current research examiningtraditional, complementary and alternativemedicine (T/CAM) providers’ framing of healthand research in behavior change in differentpopulations (e.g., women, university students)through examining the potential of T/CAM tofoster resilient and trusting patient-providerrelationships in management of chronicconditions. Specifically, the goal of the project isto conduct an in-depth investigation tounderstand the implications for integration ofCAM therapies (e.g., group mind/bodyintervention with yoga sessions) with biomedicalcare on quality of life outcomes, including painmanagement, anxiety, depression and copingskills for patients managing chronic conditions.

Elsie Walker, ENGL Dr. Walker’s primary goal is to complete hercurrent book titled Hearing the Cinema of MichaelHaneke. She has received a contract for this bookwith Oxford University Press, which will be hersecond published by them. The three readerreports that she received in response to twosample chapters strongly suggest that the bookwill have a lasting impact in her primary area ofresearch: sound track studies. Indeed, one of theanonymous readers wrote that she “may well seta standard for how to analyze film sound (notjust music!) in an auteur-based cinema.”

SU SPJ Represents In New OrleansAfter months extensive planning for the

national Excellence in Journalism (EIJ)Conference, SU’s chapter of Society of

Professional Journalists (SPT) had the privilegeof traveling all the way down south to “TheBig Easy” in September. Dr. Jennifer Cox accompanied seven SUstudents to New Orleans for the four-dayconference, where students had theopportunity to learn new aspects of journalismin seminars and network with otherprofessionals in the field. “EIJ is such a unique opportunity to cometogether with not only your own team but alsopeople from different backgrounds, like theNative American Journalists that SPJ pairedwith this year,” senior Shannon Wiley said.“We all get to learn from each other as well ascreate shared experiences.” EIJ consisted of multiple seminars thatoffered various insights into new journalismconcepts, new and upcoming technologies anddifferent ways of representing diverse groups inthe news. “My favorite seminar was definitely the‘Making a Murderer’ one because they reallyencouraged young journalists like us to becurious, ask hard questions and to have thick

skin when covering such a big story,” juniorKaydee Jones said. “I liked that they made meexcited and ready to take on the world after thesession ended.” Students were also able to speak withpotential employers in hopes of lining up asummer internship or job after college. “Nextstar and Sinclair Broadcasting werelooking to train and hire kids right after school,move them around their markets and helpthem succeed in their same company,” juniorDrew Williams said. “Sinclair was going tooffer me a job right there, but I wanted to waituntil after graduation.” Additionally, the seven studentsexperienced the rich and lively culture andhistory of NOLA through Louisiana food,jazz music and sightseeing. “The most important thing about this tripfor me was not only the networkingexperience and the job offers I got, but theopportunity to connect with my executiveboard like a family,” SPJ President BrookeReese said. “We truly learned so much aboutjournalism, each other and ourselves withinthe four days we spent in NOLA, and it wasthe best experience of my life.”

Paul Pfeiffer, created a flexible classroom to continue as a rehearsal hall for the Departmentof Music Theatre and Dance, enhance theclassroom abilities for acting, directing and design and to provide a small performance venuefor the academic requirements of the newlycombined department. The summer crew under the direction ofAnderson consisted of spring graduates TimWhitehead Jr. and Cassandra Raefski, juniorsMichael Mitchell and Ryan Bailey, seniorThomas Watson, and graduate school-boundMichael Cummings. The project began with a new Masonite floor(sealing down the much splintered originalhardwood floor). New black acoustic ceiling tilesand fresh wall colors continued the changes. Asteel pipe grid and additional power circuits allowthe space to use new LED theatrical lightinginstruments and high mounted stage speakers.

In addition, there are new lighting controland sound control boards housed in a newconsole for use by technicians and stagemanagers. Also added is a new computerprojector and screen to enhance the smartclassroom and black drapery to change the lookand feel of the room for a variety of uses. Theaddition of a small elevated seating riser andnew chairs complete the conversion. Mitchell and Bailey also helped Anderson

renovate the Music, Theatre and DanceDepartment’s Costume Collection Storeroom.The renovation included the installation of 75additional feet of hanging racks and thereplacement of the existing hanging racks withsmaller diameter pipes to better accommodate alarge variety of hanging stock and hangers. Thestoreroom now has more than 240 feet ofhanging space for the costume collection.

Insights on the Fulton Humanities Program in its Sophomore YearThe Fulton Public Humanities Program

(FPHP) was founded last fall with themission to promote public awareness of

marginalized groups throughout history andengage the community in meaningful discussionabout these groups. The initiative, led by members of the HistoryDepartment, has grown to be a multi-disciplinary organization spanning severaldepartments and promoting the values andmethods of the humanities. Recent developments surrounding the DakotaAccess Pipeline have brought back issues ofindigenous rights, corporate exploitation ofnatural resources and federal management ofIndian affairs into the spotlight. For the FifthAnnual Native American Heritage Month thisNovember, the Public Humanities Program

looks to explore Native Americans not only ashistorical groups, but also as vibrantcommunities that exist today and continue toface many challenges. On October 27, Dr. Céline Carayon, whoteaches Native American history at SU, gives alecture titled “Pipelines, Mascots andRecognition: The Internationalization ofIndigenous Rights Movements.” This is followed on November 9 by adocumentary film, Beat of the Drum, whichexplores the connection between the music offour modern First Nations performers and theplace of the drum in traditional native society.After the film, a roundtable panel of expertsdiscusses the film and answers questions. Ben Barnes, Second Chief of the ShawneeTribe, gives a keynote lecture on November 17

titled “A Convenient Indian: The SocialRealities for Today’s Indigenous Americans”about the social, legal and cultural realities ofNative people today. Additionally, the WardMuseum presents “Indigenous Landscapes: TheCultural History of the Chicone Reservation”on that date. Exciting Happenings with PACE: PACE Celebrates U.S. Constitution Day: Would You Sign?

PACE’s U.S. Constitution Day event inRed Square on September 16 was amajor success. Close to 150 students,

faculty and staff members “voted” for oragainst the Constitution. Among those who said they would sign,

some of the points they liked about theConstitution were inalienable rights andgeneral equality. Modifications they would liketo see included legalization of marijuana andrestricting the right to bear arms, specificallybanning assault weapons.

Among those who said they would not sign,some of the reasons cited were a lack of supportfor women and minorities in the Constitution, abelief that it is outdated and not having enoughinformation for a definitive “yes” vote.

The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance At Salisbury UniversityAnew program designed to prepare

students for work in the nonprofit sectorwill soon be available. The Nonprofit

Leadership Alliance (NLA) is a nationalorganization that provides certification in themanagement of nonprofits. Salisbury University will begin enrollmentthis spring, and the program will start in fall2017. SU students completing the program willgain access to a network of nonprofit careerresources and will receive the CertifiedNonprofit Professional (CNP) credential. Thisnationally recognized certificate is accepted asevidence of preparation for entry-levelprofessional positions by many national andlocal organizations such as the YMCA, CatholicCharities, Fair Trade Campaigns and Habitatfor Humanity, among others. “This certificate program is the perfectpreparation for those undergraduate studentswho have done volunteer or service work, whoare passionate about ‘making a difference’and/or are looking for a career path in whichthey can apply knowledge from their majors into

the nonprofit sector,” said Dr. Carolina Bown,NLA campus director. The program is open to students from anymajor offered by SU and should not add to thetime required to graduate. All requirements forthe major, as well as for the certificate, can beaccomplished as part of the student’s overallcourse of study. Students will work with Dr. Bown and theiracademic advisors to establish individualizedcurricular and co-curricular programs that fulfillthe requirements of the certificate. Typically,students will address 10 “core competencies” bytaking two courses – to be determined soon –,completing a 300-hour internship in a 501(c)(3)organization and by participating in at least inone annual Alliance Management Institute(AMI) conference. Two examples of co-curricular programs arecompleting a study abroad program or leadingan environmental, cultural or social cause. “The hands-on experience and thedevelopment of leadership and service skillsunder professional guidance will set these

students apart from their peers,” Bown said. Currently, the Alliance is present in almost 40colleges and universities. Salisbury Universityis one of the only two institutions in Marylandto partner with NLA. Nationally, there aremore than 9,000 certified nonprofitprofessionals (CNPs) who, in conjunction withthe Alliance’s nonprofit and campusespartners, represent the largest network in thenonprofit sector of the country. CADR M.A. Student Wins Hague Internship

Iwas awarded ascholarship tointern at the

judicial capital ofthe world, TheHague, Netherlands,to studyinternational law forthe summer of2016. Thisinternship was ajoint program withan American non-governmentalorganization, the

International Peace and Security Institute (IPSI)and the United Nations. Students were selected from all over the worldto participate in this program, and I now havefriends across the globe. I learned about so manydifferent lifestyles and everyone’s differentperceptions on international relations whilebeing abroad. Being multilingual in fivelanguages, I was able to communicate with someof the participants in their native tongues. While staying at The Hague, I was able toattend and go to trials at the International Courtof Justice, International Criminal Court and theInternational Court for the former Yugoslavia. Ieven had the opportunity to travel to the city ofEuropean Union’s headquarters, Brussels,Belgium, for two days. Upon arrival to The Hague, I was able toparticipate in the discussions and the decisionfrom the International Court of Justice

regarding the Spratly Islands dispute. I could feelwithin the first few days at this internship thatmy life was changing forever, and I was going tobring home so much knowledge, expertise andcontacts to further develop myself professionallyand academically. My colleagues and I studied weekdays at adiplomatic training institute in The Hague,known as the Clingendael. The Clingendael wasestablished on what was former Nazi-occupiedterritory, and yet now, the institute is a symbol ofpeace and justice. There were diplomats from allover the world meeting at the Clingendael andspeaking with the students at the program.Participants also learned from internationalscholars, authors, practitioners and trainers withlengthy daily readings and assignments. I had the opportunity at the Clingendael totalk with the current religious leader of theYazidis who is combatting ISIS, known as theBaba Sheikh, and then have dinner with theFormer Special Adviser to the Prosecutor of theInternational Criminal Tribunal for the FormerYugoslavia and the Prosecutor of theInternational Criminal Court Madame FatouBensouda. In addition, Director of theClingendael Academy Ron Ton trainedparticipants in international negotiation skills,which prepared students for a simulation in afictional region of Syria to develop a transitionaljustice mechanism. IPSI provided me with the skills to be aneffective peacemaker and helped me realize thesignificance of the individual as a power forpeace. Human societies are complex systems

and the next generation of peacemakers are notwhat is currently ingrained in current sustainableresilience building, but are that people that havebeen trained with self-assessing mechanisms andthat can represent the diversity of situations andproblem-solving. Immediately upon return to theU.S., I was invited to have dinner with theDepartment of State and then attend theCouncil on Foreign Relations’ and the UnitedNations’ headquarters in New York City. In thefall and spring semesters, I am working as thegraduate assistant for the Conflict Analysis andDispute Resolution Department at SU.

SIGHTsite | HEARhere is aserial project of immersive, audio/visualperformances that combines audio/video fieldrecordings of specific locations with originalmusic compositions and large-scale, real-timevideo projections. For this second iteration, C Tara and David spent seven days in theBrattleboro area exploring its important sites,unique terrain and documentingtheir experiences.

David Gladden was part of a group show,“Color Games,” at HEREart in New YorkCity from July 7-September 3. This exhibition

featured threeartists whomanipulate colorand createexuberant workthat stands at theintersection ofdreams, memoryand diversion.

Jee Hwang is participating in two groupexhibitions in the fall. Her work “Syndrome”appears in the exhibition titled “A Dark Wood”at Art House Gallery and Curious Matter inJersey City, NJ, from October 8-December 9.She also participates in “Unsettled,” a 12-person exhibition that shows uncertainness andunstableness in various aspects within theworks of art, on view at the Korean CulturalCenter in New York City from November 16-December 16.

Art historian Jennifer Liston was one of 25scholars selected to participate in the NationalEndowment for the Humanities (NEH) three-week-long Summer Institute “Teaching theReformation after Five Hundred Years.” Theinstitute was hosted by the H. Henry MeeterCenter for Calvin Studies at Calvin College inGrand Rapids, MI, in July. In August, shepresented her paper “Imperial Relations in theall’antica Decorations of the Magno Palazzoin Trent” at the Sixteenth Century Society’sConference in Bruges, Belgium, as part of apanel titled “Art, Politics and the PublicSphere.” Her review of A. Victor Coonin’sFrom Marble to Flesh: The Biography ofMichelangelo’s David will appear in theforthcoming edition of the Sixteenth CenturyJournal.

Victoria Pass participated in two panelsresulting from the 2015 NEH SummerInstitute, “The Canon and Beyond: Teachingthe History of Modern Design,” in which sheparticipated. One panel was at the NationalAssociation of Schools of Art and Design’sannual conference in Baltimore on October15, and the other at the Southeastern CollegeArt Conference on October 21. In each panel,she and other Summer Institute scholarsshared the ways in which they integratedcontent and pedagogical approaches inspiredby the institute into their design history coursesover the past year.

Brooke Rogers’ painting “Dawn Patrol” wasone of 40 works chosen from more than 400entries for inclusion in the Seventh RehobothArt League Biennial exhibition. Juror GeorgeCiscle, founding director Baltimore’sContemporary Museum, singled out Rogers’work for a Juror’s Award of Excellence. Theexhibition ran from September 9-26 at the ArtLeague’s Tubbs and Corkran Galleriesin Henlopen Acres, DE.

COMMUNICATION ARTS

David Burns presented “EncouragingIntellectual Versatility: Reinforcing the ‘Unity’in Community Storytelling,” which focused onthe pedagogical, social and political impact ofusing the 25th Anniversary of the Americanswith Disabilities Act as a theme in his long-form journalism class. The presentation wasmade at Association for Education inJournalism and Mass Communication’snational convention in Minneapolis, MN, in August.

Jennifer Cox won two teaching awards at theAssociation for Education in Journalism andMass Communication’s national convention inMinneapolis, MN, in August. Cox placed thirdin the Best Practices in Teaching Awardcompetition for her submission “Ethics in RealTime – Using Periscope to Increase Accuracy,Truth and Transparency.” She thenparticipated in a journalism education paneldiscussing this activity at the Society ofProfessional Journalists’ national conference in

September. Cox also received an honorablemention in the Teaching Terrifically in the21st Century competition for her entry“Flipping the Lens: Using Photo Elicitation toTurn Participants into Reporters.” Bothawards featured experiential learningopportunities aimed at preparing studentjournalists for live media work. She was alsonamed SPJ Member of the Month by thenational organization.

Cox also presented a paper at the AEJMCconference, titled “Spreading the News –Examining College Students’ Awareness ofTheir Participatory News Habits.” The paperexamined what types of news students shareon social media and whether their perceptionsof the news they share matched with whatthey actually did. She also was awarded aKopenhaver Fellowship at the conference,which allowed her to participate in a selectiveworkshop regarding women’s issues in highereducation.

Chrys Egan has two book chapter that willbe released this academic year. One is theculmination of two and a half years ofresearch as lead author of seven internationalwomen to create a new theoretical model ofdiverse leadership: “Capacious Model ofLeadership Identities Construction” inAdvancing Women and Leadership: Moving the Needlethrough Applied Theory Building. The otherchapter is an analysis of the key leadershipidentity concepts of self and context:“Women’s Leadership Identity: ExploringPerson and Context” in the Handbook of Researchon Gender and Leadership.

Egan also will deliver several conferencepresentations on this thematic work. At thePopular Culture Association in the South’sOctober conference, in Nashville, TN, she ischair of the panel “Politics as (Un)Usual: 2016US Presidential Elections,” where she willdeliver her paper “Mr. or Mrs. President:Gender Politics in the Trump and ClintonPresidential Campaigns.” At the InternationalLeadership Association conference in Atlanta,GA, this November, she presents her work“Social Media, the Blogosphere and InclusivityActivism in Online Spaces” and previews theWomen and Leadership Affinity GroupConference to be held June 11-14 at theOmega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. Newton’s second book on British televisionand race was edited, finalized and submitted toManchester University Press this summer. Theanthology features eight authors from the U.K.and U.S., each conversant with Britishtelevision policies, practices and programming.Among those chosen by Newton to appear inthe book is CMAT’s James Burton andan essay on how 1950s Britain and issues ofrace have been reframed within contemporarytelevision texts. Newton also published an essayon 1950s radio, the BBC and NBCin Broadcasting in the U.K. and U.S. in the 1950sfrom Cambridge Scholars Publishing. His essaywas “Race, Immigration and Reasoning:Britain and America’s Town Hall Meeting ofthe Air,” which examined the highly popularshow Town Hall Meeting of the Air anddiscourses on West Indian and Puerto Ricanimmigration.

Haven Simmons delivered units on planningteams, media outreach and attractingstakeholders in a FEMA multi-hazards coursefor higher education to representatives fromHood College, Notre Dame University ofMaryland, Montgomery College, and Carrolland Frederick community colleges in Frederick,MD, this August. The same month, he taughtextensively in a FEMA advanced leadershipacademy course at the Virginia Department ofEmergency Management in Richmond.

Toran Hansen’s paper “Holistic Peace” waspublished in Peace Review: A Journal of SocialJustice last fall.

Vitus Ozoke presented a paper, titled“Flipping Nigeria’s Public School Classroomsfor the Twenty-first Century: A Problem-solving Approach,” at the SecondInternational Conference on Education forSustainable Development at Ebonyi State,Nigeria. The article was also published in theJournal of Educational Policy and EntrepreneurialResearch.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Sarah Surak presented the paper “ThePower Dialog as a Collaborative RegionalCapstone/Keystone Experience,” co-authoredwith Dr. Barry Muchnick at St. Mary’s Collegeat the Association of Environmental Studiesand Sciences Annual Meeting in June. Thepaper describes an innovative collaborativeeffort bringing together three classes at twoinstitutions to coordinate Maryland’sparticipation in the national Power Dialogueprogram.

James Hatley presented the paper“Bugbeean Fluency and Natural History:Cutworm Moths of the First People’s BuffaloJump State Park” for the Sitka Institute inAugust under the auspices of the PacificAssociation for the Continental Tradition.

Carolina Bown published a peer-reviewedchapter on Andean leadership in the bookCreative Social Change: Leadership for a HealthyWorld in July. Also this past summer, Bownattended the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance(NLA) Conference in Houston, TX. She is theNLA campus director at SU.

Sally Perret is traveling to Málaga andSevilla, Spain, this semester, with support fromthe SU Foundation, to finalize details for her2017 summer study abroad courses: MDFL399.901 (The Business of Creative Expression,taught in Spanish) and MDFL 399.002 (TheCulture and Cultural Industries of Spain,taught in English). While in Spain, she also isconducting research for an upcomingpresentation at the Modern LanguageAssociation Conference in January inPhiladelphia.

Aurélie Van de Wiele and ClaireKew were awarded the Tournées grant fromthe French-American Cultural ExchangeFoundation in order to screen six French filmson campus in February and March of 2017.All showings will be free and open to thepublic.

Aurélie Van de Wiele published an articleon the representation on ennui in CharlesBaudelaire’s poetry in the peer-review journal Alkemie. She also received theSU Center for International Education TravelGrant, which enabled her travel to Lyon,France, during the summer to establish a newstudy abroad program at the University ofLyon.

MUSIC, THEATRE & DANCE

Linda Cockey gave three presentations at theInternational Society of Music Educationduring their biannual conference in Glasgow,Scotland, in July: “Wellness Resources for theMusician,” a symposium titled “Curricular andExtracurricular Approaches in PromotingPerformance Health and Wellness in StudentMusicians” and “Teaching Strategies to

Promote Healthy Learning.” All thesepresentations were part of the MusiciansHealth Committee’s selections for ISMEinvolving nations from around the world.Cockey also presented a webinar for theCollege Music Society in September, titled“Addressing Issues on the Maintenance ofHealth and Safety in a Music Program,” whereshe reviewed different ways of implementinghealth and safety issues into a musiccurriculum.

Victoria Hutchinson’s acclaimedreconstruction of Mary Wigman’s 1926“Hexentanz” (“Witch Dance”) recentlyappeared at the FringeArts Festival inPhiladelphia. Dancefusion, a modern dancerepertory company, featured the work in itsprogram Making Dance, accompanied byTravis Goffredo, senior percussion studiesmajor at Temple University’s Boyer College ofMusic.

John Raley designed scenery for In the Heightsat Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre thispast summer. Accompanying Raley was SUundergraduate Eleni Lukaszczyk, who servedthe production as assistant set designer. Thescenery for In the Heights received rave reviewswith Lehigh Valley Stage: “The set by John Raleyis one of the best I have seen in an areaproduction … ever.”

The American Spiritual Ensemble (ASE)completed a successful residency at SUSeptember 10-21. Coordinated by Wright,the residency included concerts inCambridge, Oxford and Salisbury, as well as

outreach performances and master classes atWicomico High School, UMES and SU.

Leslie Yarmo attended the Red CarpetWorld Premiere of Carrie Pilby at the TorontoInternational Film Festival. Yarmo served ascostume designer for the feature-length film.This coming-of-age film, on which four SUstudents were interns, starred Bel Powley,Nathan Lane, Gabriel Byrne and VanessaBayer. The film received rave reviews in theGuardian and the Moveable Fest with accoladesfor the costumes in the Hollywood Reporter.

Sarah Surak, Sandy Pope and MaartenPereboom presented “Innovations inCitizenship Education: Experiential Learning,Faculty Development and Assessment” at theannual ADP/TDC/NASPA Civic Learningand Democratic Engagement Meeting.

PHILOSOPHY

Timothy Stock received a grant from theNational Humanities Alliance to create apodcast on existential philosophy titled “TheFreedom of Speech,” anchored in a readinggroup at the Eastern CorrectionalInstitution. The podcast will include prisonerparticipants in the Philosophy Department ECIBook Discussion Program, as well as studentsfrom PHIL 322, Existentialism. The finalproduct will be produced by Colleen Clark ofthe Department of Music, Theatre and Danceand broadcast on Delmarva Public Radio.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

Sarah Surak’s article, “Displaying Garbage:Installations as Spaces of Domination andResistance,” will appear in the Decemberedition of the journal New Political Science. Surakco-edited the issue, which is an outgrowth ofthe 2015 International Herbert MarcuseConference held at Salisbury University. Overthe summer, Surak gave an invited lecture titled“Konkrete Gerechtigkeit: Marcuses KritischeTheorie als Praxis und sein Einfluss auf sozialeBewegungen in den USA” at the KoblenzUniversity of Applied Sciences. Surak alsopresented the paper “Urban Subversion:Resisting Inequality in City Infrastructures” atthe American Political Science Associationannual meeting in September.

Adam Hoffman presented his research,“College Students’ Perception of Inequality,”at the American Democracy Project’s CivicLearning and Democratic EngagementMeeting in Indianapolis, IN, on June 2. Hisresearch focused on the results of a student-designed poll revealing how SU students feelabout issues of inequality and poverty.

Michael O’Loughlin conducted 10 radioand television interviews with the media,including Delmarva Today at WSDL andWBOC and WMDT. PSYCHOLOGY

As part of the One Maryland, One BookProgram, Lance Garmon led a series ofcommunity discussions about the book AllAmerican Boys by Jason Reynolds and BrendanKiely. These events included one at the OceanPines Branch Library and one at the OceanCity Branch Library. One Maryland OneBook is a program of Maryland Humanities’Maryland Center for the Book and bringstogether diverse people in communities acrossthe state each fall through the sharedexperience of reading the same book.

Echo Leaver presented a poster, titled“Infrastructure and Resources for Research atPrimarily Undergraduate Institutions,” at theannual meeting of the Society forPsychophysiological Research in Minneapolison September 24.

Yuki Okubo presented a poster at the annualconvention of American PsychologicalAssociation in Denver in August 2016 titled“Critical Incidents: Students’ of Colors’Racialized Experiences in the Classroom.” Shealso was one of the facilitators for “AConversational Hour from Marginalization toEmpowerment: Asian American PacificIslander Women Resist Invisibility at thisConvention.”

Michele Schlehofer had two encyclopediaentries accepted for publication in theforthcoming publication of the SageEncyclopedia of the Psychology of Gender, edited byKevin Nadal: one on “Stereotyped GenderedBehaviors in Childhood” and one on “GenderNonconforming Behaviors.” Schlehofer alsopresented two papers at the June 2016conference of the Society for thePsychological Study of Social Issues: “It Won’tHappen to Me! Factors Predicting HealthMessage Denial” and “The SU2B Project:Participatory Action Research with MiddleSchool Youth.”

George Whitehead and Marta Losonczy-Marshall, professors emeriti, and their co-author, alumna Stephanie Smith, recently hada manuscript accepted for publication inPsychology Teaching and Learning. Themanuscript, titled “Core References inIntroductory Social Psychology andDevelopmental Psychology Textbooks,”extends their previous published research ontextbooks in these two areas of psychology.

SOCIOLOGY

Alex Stoner presented his research paper at the International Sociological Associationconference in Vienna, Austria, in July. Stonerpresented two papers at the AmericanSociological Association conference in Seattle in August. He also published a book review in Contemporary Sociology – the ASA’s journal of reviews.

In cooperation with SU Career Services,the Fulton School launched its inauguralInternship 101 Fair on September 14 in

the Guerrieri University Center. With the support of Fulton School

department chairs, Fulton Advising ServicesCoordinator John Anello, Crystal Dickersonof Career Services and Associate DeanDarrell Newton assembled procedures forobtaining internships offered by the school’s12 majors. These processes were then sharedwith a number of students who stopped byone of four tables. Faculty members from communication

arts and modern languages also attended, asdid representatives from The WashingtonCenter and Global Experiences. In additionto forwarding the names of interestedstudents to Fulton chairs, the fair wasdesigned to provide information about anupcoming class on internships being offeredin spring 2017. The one-credit course, IDIS 280-151, is

open to all majors and is a seven-week,pass/fail course beginning January 30.Members of the business community andFulton internship coordinators are invited todo live lectures or Skype discussions,providing advice and guidance to majorsseeking opportunities. Ideally, students will complete the course in

time for advising and begin planning for aninternship in summer 2017 or for the fall.

Fulton School LaunchesInternship 101 Fair

It all happened so quickly. I was writing anessay about why I NEEDED to study abroadto India, and it seemed that in a blink of an

eye I was on an airplane landing halfway aroundthe world. Being a recipient of the Benjamin Gilman

Scholarship to study abroad in India last summergave me tremendous learning privileges. I had theopportunity to study in-depth about Gandhi andnonviolent protest in the classroom, then went tovisit Gandhi’s tomb and memorial, all the whilelearning from the extraordinary country bymerely walking to class in the mornings. Global perspective became immersed into my

daily life, as every moment I was learningsomething new, from the appliances in myapartment (microwave/water dispenser) singingto me every time they were complete tounderstanding the environmental crisis and thegovernment/NGO’s actions against it. Seeing one of the modern wonders of the

world, the Taj Mahal, was incredible. I waspinching myself the whole time, unsure if this

was actually real life. Everything about India is a high-impact roller

coaster adventure: from walking across the streetto performing a Bollywood dance in-front of2,000 people. The beauty of the people was themost profound memory of my experience, and Iwill hold them deeply in my heart. While working with children from the slums,

attempting to teach them English, it becameoverwhelmingly evident that these individualswere truly, genuinely beautiful. I still do not know how to really describe my

time in India because I feel as though I am stillprocessing everything that has happened. Indiato me is the perfect amount of sensory overloadthat keeps you on your toes and forces you togrow, meanwhile providing you with a supportsystem to achieve that growth. A statement from my study abroad group that

I will forever remember is: “Have the confidenceof a cow walking the streets of India.” The amount Karnataka, Bangalore, India,

has impacted me is immense and it is in ways

that one cannot scrape the surface to describe. Iknow I left a piece of myself halfway around theworld, but I am not worried because one day Iwill be reunited with the symphony of honkinghorns and the brilliant colors of this amazingcountry.

The African-Americanspiritual title says

it all. In the last 10 years,SU's voice program hasclimbed to the top withseveral state NationalAssociation of Teachersof Singing (NATS)winners, followed byMid-Atlantic Regionalfinalists, Regionalwinners, two nationalfinalists and now its first

national top-three winner. Homegrown sophomore Jeffrey Todd recentlybecame the first Salisbury University student toplace at the national level. The vocal performance major took thirdplace in the Lower College Men/IndependentStudio Classical Music category of thecompetition, held during the 54th annual NATSconference in Chicago. His performance ofthree pieces — “Ha! Welch’ ein Augenblick!”from the Beethoven opera Fidelio, RalphVaughan Williams’ “The Call” and “PietaSignore,” an early Italian art song attributed toStradella — earned him the title as well as acash prize.

Prior to the national competition, Todd tookfirst at the Maryland/Washington, D.C. and Mid-Atlantic regional levels for his performances ofclassical repertoire. Competitors from around thecountry are judged on tone quality, vocaltechnique, body alignment/freedom, artistry,musicianship and effectiveness of communication. To put things in perspective, there werehundreds of competitors at the state levels,hundreds at the regional level, 43 for a YouTubepreliminary round, 14 chosen for the livenational semi-final round and four for thenational final round. Although the two topwinners were rising juniors with an additionalyear of study under their belts, Todd was rightthere with them. At the national competition, singers arerequired to perform three songs of contrastingstyles and choose their best piece to presentbefore a public audience for the final round.Coaching him on phrasing and German dictionuntil minutes before walking on stage, I watchedas Jeffrey wowed the crowd with his rendition of“Ha! Welch’ ein Augenblick!,” a piece heselected because of its power, complexity andimpressive nature. “I look forward to aiming even higher nextyear,” Todd said. Todd has impressed audiences locally as well.

He was featured prominently in the spring operaworkshop production of “Puccini and Friends”and recently received the Salisbury WicomicoArts Council’s competitive $1,000 Herbert D.Brent Arts Scholarship. “I love opera and love listening to olderrecordings of opera singers on YouTube,” hesaid. “I'd like to be that kind of opera singer.”Aiming high, climbing high and “trying to gethome.” That’s what the spiritual says. Possessinga rich, exceptional baritone, an intellectualcuriosity, a gentleman’s demeanor and “thelook,” I have every confidence that Jeffrey Toddwill make it home to the operatic stage.

Race & Identity in the U.S. Lecture Series Continues

SU faculty members from a variety ofdisciplines, along with guest speakersand community members, are exploring

the relevant, complex and at times volatiletopic of race and identity in the U.S. this fallin IDIS 280 “Race and Identity in the UnitedStates.” Each week’s class is also a stand-alonelecture or discussion open to all members ofthe community. So far, participants have enjoyed informativelectures, stimulating discussion and robustattendance by students, faculty, staff andcommunity members.
