ABSTRACT

Nevennar: A Long Poem in the W o n of 20th centtuy Canadian long poem is a

beteroglossic narraîive concerneci with the çreation of a specil9ng suôject through a poiypbo~y of

disparate voices which stem firom an a n a s i d pPsS a d k t , îoDr namtïves, and contemporary voices-

In the fist haif of the poem the authoritative voice whidi iaitially creates Main Og as a stable

constnict @diy slips tow~rds Nevermas, a time that neva cumes. In her quest for knowledge of

her own aucestral past Mairi moves towards an other Mairi, who emerges out of the interaction of

persuasive voices via diaiogic micro-mmtives creaîed by a chorus (a coiiage) of appropriated voices,

"real," found, and imapiriarv.

The theoreticai hmwork for Newnnas &ses h m the infiuence of piyphony on the long

poems of David Atnason, Michael ûndaatje and Robert Kroetsch, and nom the Bakhtinian

explication of Meanipean satire which, arnong other things, promotes the understaadiag of a

c e a l i z e d view of the world. In that camivaiized world, replacement of the old with the new,

resistance to emiïngs and, consequentiy, myriad beginigags, doublings, repetitions and inversions Pu

work towards the re-aiignment of PeK. For Maki, ttiis re-aligmeat, brou@ about by meam of the

intefaction of the autboritative d prsuiisive voices 1-ely and opimiisticaUy allows resistaace

to closue as it waits for Nevermas.

It is my opinion that if one is gomg to cook French, tbere are certain thiags of *ch one must be itware. We wiIl consider the menu in due the. Perbaps we will begin with a word on French soups. Exceilent as some ofthe French soups are, then is &en much to be desired as regards the everydaypoikzges saved in most houses. But of course your b e r party couM bardïy be d e d everyàay. Thepo@ges though, there is a certain lack of nchness and thickening about them, which is not a t t racb even to the nonepicurean visitor. In the m p s aiar c h , caôbage leaves sîmggie about in pale bouillon, and in the smp socCpe~ there is little taste save the floating bread crusts that cova its srirtace. An e f b t is made to get good soup out of the bouilli, ard yet maLe the latter appetizing. Alas! Notwitbstaading aU itE disgiiises, h the sbape of sauces and pickles, if the soup has been really good, the meat has suffered accordingiy and has wthing tempting left about it.

Mairi: Mrs. Beeton , . . .

Mrs. Beeton: Now we'U move dong to French dishes- N e y in the ana of Provence which p u rnenboned, a great d d of attention is paid to the prrplintioa of fi&. This attention is rnost naninl in a country where the d e s of the church prescni as a penance7 a maigre f a r e o n c e a m thoughitisga#allyabsavedonlyonFridays.
