THE 10 PLAGUES SHMOOZE! GET A CLUE “SCIENTRIFFIC SEDER”
Hey Kids!3 Matzot + 4 questions + 4 cups of wine = Passover. But there’s much more to this holiday than that!
When G-d freed us from Egypt, He did so in order to turnus into a proud, Jewish nation, ready to follow the Torahand live our lives in peace and harmony.
The Hebrew word for Egypt is “Mitzrayim” which means“Boundaries.”
The Festival of our Freedom is more than just freedomfrom slavery – it means the freedom to break out of ourboundaries, to push ourselves a little harder than beforeand uncover our true potential.
This holiday, take it upon yourself to do one extra Mitzvah– good deed, that will bring true freedom and peace to theworld with the coming of Moshiach!

The plague of lice was the first plague thatPharaoh’s royal magicians could not copy, and theyhad to admit that it was the finger of G-d. These tinyinsects were just itching to bug the Egyptians! Withall the annoyance that lice causes, it’s no wondersome people have Phthiriophobia – a fear of lice.
Wild beasts, alligators, snakes, and scorpions invaded Egypt, chasingand attacking the Egyptians and causing widespread panic. TheInland Taipan snake is the most poisonous snake in the world. Foundin Central Australia, the venom injected in a single bite from this 6ft(2m) beauty is enough to kill 100 adult humans!
For 210 years, the Jewish people suffered under Pharaohand the Egyptians. Finally, Moses demanded that
Pharaoh let his people go! Pharaoh refused, so G-d sentten terrible plagues on Egypt, until he finally agreed.
Every year at the Seder we pour out a little bit ofwine as we say the name of each plague.
Can you remember all ten?
10Starting from the mighty Nile
River, all the waters in Egyptturned into blood! For anentire week, the Egyptians had
no fresh water unless theybought it from a Jew.
Every time your heart beats, bloodis pumped through your entirebody. With all this movement, yourblood travels almost 12,000 miles(19,000 km) every single day!

4 Isn’t it Wild?
Frogs made their way into every nook and cranny of the
Egyptians’ homes, and their ear-splitting croaks filled the
air. Frogs are one of the best leapers on the planet! They
can launch themselves over 20 times their own length. That
would be like you jumping 100 feet (30m) in one go!

Animals owned by Egyptians became ill and died. Howevermany Egyptians heeded Moses’ warning, and brought theiranimals indoors where they were kept safe. On average, cowslive for about 7 years. The oldest cow everrecorded was Big Bertha. She reachedthe ripe old age of 48!
Giant hailstones crashed down, killing any Egyptians who venturedoutside, and destroying most ofthe crops. Although all theplagues were miraculous, this one
had another hidden miracle – thehailstones had fire inside! Normally, iceextinguishes fire, and fire melts ice. But
during this plague, the two elements worked togetherto cause even more destruction.
At first it was just dark, butsoon the darkness became sothick, the Egyptians froze. Theywere smothered by thedarkness and wereunable to move even aninch! During the winter, some parts of northern Finland don’t get anysunlight for 50 days or more! That’s a longtime, but it definitely doesn’t get as dark asit did in Egypt!
G-d told Moses to fill his hands
with ashes and throw it towards
the sky. It settled over the
entire land of Egypt, and wherever it fell, it turned into
painful boils on the Egyptians. Another name for a boil
is “furuncle.” Try saying that fast, ten times in a row!
Furuncle!Furuncle!

Locusts (grasshoppers) swarmedover Egypt like a huge, dark cloud, devouring all the remainingvegetation. Did you knowthere are some speciesof grasshoppersthat are kosher? However, nowadayswe are not sure whichones they are, soyou won’tfind any grasshoppers in thekosher section of the supermarket!
Moses warned Pharaoh that the finalplague would be the death of everyfirstborn. Sure enough, at midnight, everyfirstborn male human and animal died. Allthat is, except for the Jews. G-d wanted to
punish the Egyptians so He “passedover” the Jewish homes, andthat’s how this wonderfulholiday got its name!

MiriamOldest child of Amram andYocheved, Miriam was born justwhen the bitter slavery began, hence the meaning of her name“Mar” – “Bitter.” Prophetessand leader of the women, Miriam has proven to be“bitter” to her enemies instead! Having confirmedher bravery from an early age by rescuing Jewishbabies from Pharaoh and his men, Miriam soonassumed responsibility of her youngest brotherMoses, guarding him in the river Nile. Will herguidance prove misguided, or will her brother indeedgrow up to save his nation?
pharaohUnlike the old King Pharaoh, who allowed Joseph and theJews to live freely in his land, this Pharaoh is a differentkettle of fish. The new rulerhas vowed to put a halt to the growing Jewishpopulation in Egypt. “Slave labor is the way togo,” crows Pharaoh with cruel delight.
The new Pharaoh is said to be a mere cubit(44cm or 1.5ft) in height! Is he compensatingfor something? That may very well be the case.
Will he succeed in his dastardly plan? We shallhave to wait and see…

Although she is the daughter of mighty KingPharaoh, Princess Batya has always beendrawn to the desperate plight of the Jewish
slaves. Rumors have been circulating that while cooling off in theNile one day, Batya noticed a woven basket floating towards her.Although it was far beyond her reach, her hand was miraculouslylengthened until she was able to pull the basket towards her.
Batya has named the baby “Moshe,” and sources tell us she has vowed toraise him in the palace as her own son.

Nogesh(Egyptian Taskmaster)
Pharaoh has appointed“Nogshim” – crueltaskmasters, to suppressthe growing numbers ofthe Jews. They started byheavily taxing the Jewishslaves, and limiting their
freedom to go where they pleased. Whenthis was not enough, they forced them intolabor camps, building cities, monuments, pyramids and roads. Yet the more the Egyp-tians oppress them, the more the childrenof Israel increase! The taskmasters now seethat slavery is not enough, and are on thealert for all new-born Jewish baby boys, tothrow into the Nile. Is this the final straw?
MosesOur analysts say Moses (Moshe in Hebrew), is the man tofollow at the moment! At birth, Moses filled the housewith a G-dly light, prompting all who saw him to predicta brilliant future for the boy. Growing up in Pharaoh’spalace for 40 years, Moses nevertheless retained a soft
spot in his heart for his people, and did all he could to ease their burden.Moses is currently on the run after being accused of killing an Egyptiantaskmaster who was seen beating a poor Jew to death. Rumor has it, heis married to Tzipporah, daughter of theHigh Priest of Midian, and is planninghis imminent return to Egypt. Hiscatchphrase? “Let My People Go!”
Jewish slaveThe plight of the Jews is a pitiful one indeed. They are doomedto building vast cities on unstable ground, that collapse assoon as they are erected. Husbands and wives are separatedand children forced into slavery. They must gather straw andmud to make their own bricks, are forced to work throughout
the night, and are left to forage in the fields for food. Only one tribe is exemptfrom this cruel torture – the tribe of Levi – who never joined the work force in thefirst place. Secret reports say that the babies thrown into the Nile by Egyptiansare being scooped up and saved by angels, awaiting the day of redemption whenthey will be reunited with their families once again. When will this day come?

he palace walls loomed over them menacingly as thetwo brothers made their way past thearmed guards flanking either side ofthe royal entrance. Moses and hisbrother Aharon were on an
important mission — to tell KingPharaoh to let the Jews leave Egypt.Even though Aharon was older, henever felt bad that his youngerbrother Moses was the leader ofthe Jewish people. He helpedMoses as much as he could, accompanying him on all hisvisits to Pharaoh, and acting ashis spokesperson since Mosesdidn’t speak very clearly.
“I will not let them go!”thundered Pharaoh, and with
that, Aharon, following G-d’s instructions, struck Egypt withthe first three of the 10 plagues.
When the Jews finally left Egypt to wander in the desert, G-dsurrounded them with thick, cool clouds that miraculouslyprotected them from their enemies, wild animals, and thescorching desert heat. This special gift was given to the Jewishpeople in Aharon’s honor and lasted for 40 years.
Everybody knew Aharon as a man of peace, who brought love andpeace to the entire nation. When two families fought, Aharonwould secretly inform both sides that the other was sorry andwanted to stop fighting. Next time they would meet, both of themwere willing to make up with one another and become friends
once again. Aharon was so good at convincingpeople to make peace that a lot of the people
he had helped, named their childrenafter him. Before long, “Aharon”
became one of the most popularbaby names!
Aharon and his sons weregiven the important job of
being Kohanim – priests –in the Temple. Every Jewbelongs to one of 3groups: Kohanim, Leviimand Yisraelim. AllKohanim – up until today– are descendants of
Aharon the Kohen! Do youknow which group you
belong to?
Name: AharonBorn: 1397 BCE Died: 1273 BCE
Siblings: Miriam, Moses
Wife: Elisheva
Children: Nadav, Avihu, Elazar, Itamar
Occupation: High Priest (Kohen Gadol)Not only was Aharon big brother to Moses, hewas also his partner and spokesperson toPharaoh. Famous for pursuing peace at all costs, Aharon also served as the Kohen Gadol, the High Priest. One of themany responsibilities that came along with this important positionincluded preparing the golden Menorah every day. Aharon died atthe age of 122. The Jewish people mourned for an entire monthafter the passing of their leader and friend, for Aharon had broughtpeace and harmony to his people.

ver heard of the expression
“as old as Methuselah?”
That’s what we use to describe something
really ancient, like a family heirloom, a long-
lived tortoise, or even an old joke heard
many times before.
Methuselah (Metushelach in Hebrew),
was Noah’s grandfather, and the oldest
recorded man in the Torah, living to the
age of 969 years old! That’s
where the expression “As old
as Methuselah” comes from!
But life isn’t always like that.
In fact, during the Middle Ages,
the average life expectancy of a
person was just 30 years of age.
Terrible living conditions, diseases
like the Bubonic Plague, and primitive
medical treatment, meant people
rarely lived until their fifties. As
recently as 200 years ago, even the sim-
ple flu could mean death, as the medicine
to treat it had not yet been discovered.
Compared with the situation today, the
numbers are staggering. The life expectancy
for a child
born in 2009, is
a whopping 78 years
old! And from year to
year it keeps climbing higher,
thanks to advances in modern med-
icine like vaccinations, transplants, x-ray
machines and the humble aspirin!
Our sages tell us that when Moshiach
comes and brings real peace to the world,
G-d will eliminate all illness and disease.
As we get closer to the coming of Moshi-
ach, this is slowly becoming a reality in
front of our eyes!
When our ancestors left Egypt over
3,000 years ago, G-d performed a mir-
acle for them. All who were sick and
injured were healed, diseases cleared
up, wounds disappeared, the blind
could see and the deaf could hear.
With all the amazing advances we
see in medical technology, we are
fast-forwarding to the day when
Moshiach will come and G-d will
once again heal us, and bring
true peace to the world!

Chag HaMatzotThe most important Mitzvah on Passover is eating
Matzah – that’s why the Torah calls Passover
“Chag HaMatzot” – the Festival of Matzot.
18 MinutesThe entire Matzah-making process
takes 18 minutes, from making
the dough until it’s put into
the oven. Any more than
that and the dough will
rise, causing it to
become Chametz!
MichlahDeMeHemnutahWe had so much faith in G-d
that we left Egypt without even
giving our dough time to rise –
Matzah! That’s why Matzah is also
called “Michlah DeMeHemnutah” –
the Bread of Faith.
ShmurahMatzah“Shmurah” means
“Guarded.” The flour used
to make the Matzah is
watched from the moment
the wheat is cut, until the
Matzot are placed in the
oven, to ensure it does not
come in contact with water.
Kings & QueensWhen we eat Matzah during
the Seder, we lean to the left like
royalty because G-d saved us from
Egypt and now we are free men!
KezayitTo fulfill the Mitzvah of
eating Matzah on both
Seder nights, we eat at
least one Kezayit
measurement, which
is about half the
weight of an egg.
Holey Dough! The holes in the Matzah aren’t just
there for decoration. They help
prevent the dough from rising
and becoming Chametz

Chametz (Hebrew: חמץ)(also Chometz or Chumetz) is leaven – any
food that is made from one of the five grains (wheat, barley, spelt,
oats and rye) and water, and has been allowed to ferment and
rise. Bread, cereal, cookies, doughnuts, pasta, cakes and any
processed food – even dog-food – that is not labelled “Kosher for
Passover,” may include Chametz ingredients.

Did You Know?
Chametz and Matzah
are made from the
same ingredients:
flour and water. The
only difference
between the two is
that Chametz has
been allowed to rise.
Chametz represents
pride and arrogance.
Matzah represents
humility. Passover is
a time to realize that
everything we have is
thanks to G-d, and
we humbly thank Him
for all that He does.

1. CLEANBefore Passover begins, we make sure to
clean our houses thoroughly for all traces of
Chametz. Use our checklist on the side to
catch those crumbs!
2. SELLInstead of throwing away food and items we
can still use, we pack and lock them away
and authorize a Rabbi to sell them to a non-
Jew until the holiday ends.
Fill out the Sale of Chametz form on page 2
or download one from www.passover.net
3. SEARCHThe night before Passover we make a Grand
Search, to make sure there is no visible
Chametz left in the house.
This year the search for Chametz will take
place on: Tuesday night, April 7, 2009
4. BURNThe morning of the first Seder night, before
Passover begins, we take the bag of
Chametz that we found the night before and
burn it before midday. Only an adult should
do the burning.
Don’t forget to declare:
All leaven or anything which is in my possession, whether I have seen it or not, whether I have ob-served it or not, whether I have removed it or not, shall be considered naught and ownerless as thedust of the earth.
This year we burn the Chametz on:

Step One:
Tightly wrap up 10
pieces of bread so
no crumbs can
escape.
Step Two:
Hide the 10 pieces,
but don’t forget
where you put them!
Step Three:
Before the search
begins say this
special blessing:
Ba-ruch Ata Ado-nai Elo-heinu Melech
Ha-olam Asher Kid-shanu Be-mitzvotav
Ve-tzivanu Al Bi-yur Chametz.
Blessed are you, L-rd our G-d, King of theuniverse, Who has sanctified us with Hiscommandments and commanded usconcerning the removal of Chametz.Step Four:
Take a candle, feather, paper bag and
wooden spoon. With adult supervision, use
the candle to search in all the nooks and
crannies of the house. Use the feather to
sweep each piece of Chametz into the
spoon, then place in the paper bag.
Step Five:
When all 10 pieces are in the bag (along
with any other Chametz you may find),
carefully tie it up and put it aside to be
burned in the morning.
Step Six:
Now that you’ve finished searching for
Chametz, recite the following declaration
out loud:
All leaven or anything which is in mypossession, whether I have seen it or not, whether I have observed it or not, whether I haveremoved it or not, shall be considered naught andownerless as the dust of the earth.

what goes where?The Passover Offering
We held so dearIn the Holy Temple, A lamb of one year.
I’m just here to look at,Don’t use me tonight.A symbol of freedom,An arm full of might.
The longer I boil, The harder I go
The Jews were enslaved But continued to grow
A symbol of life, I also stand for
The Festival Offering Given of yore.
I’m dipped in salt water, Like that of the tide.
Which stands for the millions of tears that were cried.I’m one of four questions
You ask on this night. There’s a meal still to come,
So just have a bite. Just like my brother, I’m not very sweet
Some of you may find me Too bitter to eat
But when in a sandwich Of Matzah, Maror,
I’m easy to swallow, Not at all a chore.
Bricks of deep red And mortar of brown
If they were not made, More children would drown
A mixture of apples, Walnuts and red wineI may not look good,
But they say I taste fine.

Tip: Matzah Brei tastes great topped with honey, syrup, jam or sugar.
While to some people, Passover means chickensoup and Matzah balls, to others—Matzah ballsdon’t even come into the picture! You see, Matzahis made of flour and water that have been
thoroughly mixed and baked, to avoid any chance ofthe dough rising and become Chametz. Once baked, theMatzah will not rise, but there remains a chance thatsome of the flour did not completely mix in, leaving afew particles at risk of rising if they come in contactwith water!
For this reason, some people are extremely careful notto get their Matzah wet at all, during Passover.
But on the 8th day, the day representing going out ofour current exile and into complete freedom—that isthe day when everyone happily sits down to matzahballs, Matzah dipped in wine, Matzah crumbled insoup—in fact, Matzah in everything you can think of!“Gebrokts” is a Yiddish word meaning “crumbled,” andthat’s exactly what we do with all the Matzah we use inour cooking on the last day of Passover.
Here is a delicious Gebrokts recipe—a perfecttreat for the last day of Passover. Enjoy!

M stands for Matzah and we have 3 of them underour Seder plate, to represent the Jewish peoplewho are divided into 3 groups: Kohanim, Leviimand Yisraelim – all of whom were miraculouslysaved by G-d on Passover!
Can you turn these 4 pieces intoa symmetrical letter M?
Hint: Instead of cutting out the shapes, why nottrace them onto a piece of paper, and cut that outinstead. Good luck!
4 SonsSPOT THE DIFFERENCES
During the Seder we read about 4 sons:Chacham — the brainy son, Rasha — the trouble maker, Tam — the simpleson, and She’ino Yodeia Lishol — the son who doesn’t know how to ask.
They may be very different, but they all come to celebrate Passover together!
See if you can spot the 8 differences between the 4 sons!

Girls, do your bit to spread the
light of Passover by lighting
candles to welcome in the holiday,
and reciting the special blessings!
After leaving Egypt, the Jews were very excited. G-d hadpromised to make them into a great nation, and give themthe Torah! Day by day they eagerly counted the 49 daysfrom when they left Egypt – Passover, until the giving ofthe Torah – Shavuot! This was called “SefiratHaOmer” – Counting the Omer.Starting from the second night of Passover, everyyear we relive the excitement by counting down49 days until Shavuot as well! We say a blessingand relate: “Today is one day to the Omer,”“Today is two days to the Omer,” “Today is8 days which is 1 week and 1 day to theOmer.” During these days we work onrefining ourselves in preparation forthe Big Day!

Lag B’Omer is a day when many have the
custom to go out in the fields, play bows
and arrows and celebrate around large bon-
fires! We commemorate the life of the great
Kabbalist, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who
passed away on this day, about 2,000 years
ago, and asked that a celebration be made in
his honor.

Did you miss out the first time? There’s
always a second chance!
In the times of the Holy Temple, everyone was
required to bring up a special Passover offering
called the Korban Pesach. If a person was unable to
do so, rather than miss out on such a special
Mitzvah, they were given a second chance a month
later, to bring the offering once again.
Pesach Sheni nowadays reminds us that it’s
never too late to make amends!
