If the giant snow piles in front of the Legion weren’t a telltale sign of spring, the packed parking lot at the 52nd annual Maple Syrup Festival certainly was. The festival happened both Saturday and Sunday at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 374 in Richards Landing and will continue again next weekend, so if you missed it, you will have another opportunity next weekend to get some delicious pancakes.

The Maple Syrup Festival is one of the larg-est events the Legion puts on in the entire year and attracts people from both far and near.

As we walked through the packed parking lot, we couldn’t help but notice plates from as far away as Texas in the parking lot! While the lines at peak times were long, everything moved along smoothly thanks to countless volunteers, not just legion members but helpful high school students earning their volunteer hours. There were some new and old vendors this year, including the chance to get a caricature drawn of you for just $5.00. You could also bring home various crafts, artwork and many other items.

The main event was, of course, all you can eat pancakes, along with those sausages that have become a favorite and more maple syrup than you can imagine. For the past few years the festival has gone green with biode-gradable plates and cups and that once again continues this year. A helpful tip for those entering at peak times like after church or right at noon, the lounge is open if you can’t find seating in the main area.

We are fortunate to have year round access to some of the world’s best maple syrup. If you take a look at any of the many sugar bushes nearby it’s easy to spot produc-ers boiling. Many different varieties were available for purchase. We try and make a point of trying different kinds from light to dark and have yet to find one we did not like. While we have not heard any official numbers yet, we will try and include them after the conclusion of the festival next week.

Island girl qualifies for the Boston Marathon

Want to Learn More about your Forest and Save on Your Taxes?

Forests benefit us all as Ontarians regardless of owner-ship. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry recognizes the importance of privately owned forests and offers landowners the opportunity to participate in the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP). The goal of the MFTIP is to bring greater fairness to the property tax system by valuing forestland accord-ing to its current use. The program is designed to in-crease landowner awareness about forest stewardship while giving them a reduction in their property taxes for managing their forests in accordance with “good forestry practices” as defined in the Forestry Act.

Landowners who apply and qualify for the program have their forest classified as Managed Forest property class. The land is taxed at 25 percent of the municipal tax rate set for residential properties. MFTIP is a vol-untary program and in order to be eligible landowners must own at least 4 hectares (9.88 acres) of forested property, be at least 50% Canadian owned, prepare a Managed Forest Plan for a 10 year period (either by you or the Approver) and have it approved by a certi-fied Managed Forest Plan Approver.

Whether your objectives are wildlife habitat, recre-ation, aesthetics or income they can be worked into a Managed Forest Plan. The Approver walks the prop-erty with the landowner to increase landowner aware-ness about options for good forest management. In this walk discussion could range from what trees to plant in different soil types, when and how to thin to improve growth, what diseased trees look like, how to improve forest health, what forest products are in the forest, how to retain certain features for wildlife, how to pre-vent environmental damage, what season to harvest in, to providing suggestions on trail placement. The land-owner shares what he has already been doing on his property and together with the Approver they come up with a set of activities (cut firewood, walk trails, make syrup, thin red pine, etc.) for the next 10 years. It’s all about the landowner meeting their objectives through sustainable management to ensure these options are available for future generations!

If it weren’t for some tops and wood on the ground you may not have known this maple stand was commercially thinned. Poor quality trees were harvested in winter to re-duce damage to remaining stems. The remaining trees are now spaced out providing greater opportunity for growth.

CHURCH SERVICESOn Good Friday, April 19th, you are invited to join with the Anglican and United folk in a “Stations of the Cross” walk and ecumenical wor-ship. Come on out and join us on April 19th for the 49th Anniversary of the non-de-nominational Good Friday Walk. Rev. Peter Hill started this tradition in 1970 and it continues today. This year folks will meet at Holy Trinity, Jocelyn at 10AM for a short service and then carry the cross up Hwy 548 to the Hilton Road and along to the 10th side road where we stop for a bag lunch at the Free Methodist Manse. (Bring your own lunch) We then head down the 10th Side Road to Harmony St. Marks United Church for a short service at approx. 2:30 PM. During the walk, we stop along the way at each station of the cross. A car will be accompanying us for anyone needing a rest.
