Designed for Drilling and Well Intervention The proprietary design of ENSCO 8500 Series rigs addresses the drilling requirements of nearly every deepwater field around the world. Standardization across the fleet streamlines operations, significantly reduces downtime and improves drilling efficiency while providing cost-effective drilling solutions. Capable of drilling in up to 8,500 feet of water, the rigs include a 2-million-pound quad derrick, offline pipe handling, automatic station-keeping and 150-person living quarters.

ENSCO 8500 Series rigs also offer multiple design efficiencies that optimize well intervention. A key feature is the dedicated subsea tree handling cart that can move and store subsea trees up to 165,000 pounds. Since multiple trees can be accomodated on the rigs’ deck, the need for additional vessels to pull and store subsea trees is eliminated.

ENSCO 8500 Series rigs come configured for Launch and Recovery Systems (LARS) that allow the subsea tree control system to be run over the side, avoiding interference with moonpool activities. Plus, the rigs are configured for Intervention Workover Control Systems (IWOC) to improve operational flexibility. These standard configurations enable operators to quickly and efficiently begin well intervention programs without delay for modifications to tree handling and storage capabilities.

Additionally, there are retractable moonpool beams that provide a 30-foot opening and a trip saver system for storing and moving the BOP while it is submerged underwater, eliminating the need for maintenance and testing.

First in Customer Satisfaction For more than 27 years, Ensco has focused on operating safely and going beyond customer expectations. We have been rated first in total customer satisfaction for five consecutive years in an independent survey by EnergyPoint Research. As a leading global offshore drilling services company, we provide a single-source solution for all drilling and well intervention needs. From drilling complex wells to completions, workovers or plug and abandonment, ENSCO 8500 Series semisubmersible rigs offer customers the ability to go from one phase of the well cycle to the other without specialized well intervention services. This capability enables a more efficient and cost-effective transition between projects.

Full Drilling Capabilities Maximize Operational Efficiency ENSCO 8500 Series rigs maximize operational efficiency during well interventions by improving BOP turnaround time with 180-day preventative maintenance cycles. The BOP stack can be wet hopped, reducing the frequency in which the BOP is pulled to surface. When the BOP must be surfaced, maintenance and testing can be completed with the BOP ready to deploy in less than four days.

In addition, the rigs have full drilling capabilities with split circulating systems. Contaminated mud can be circulated out of the well without compromising clean fluid on the surface. Casing can be cut and pulled safely through the 18¾-inch BOP and riser system. The rigs also provide eight feet of operating range draft and available space to make up the differences in tree height once a tree is installed or removed. The rigs are capable of rigging up coil tubing to pump fluids downhole.

From Drilling to Intervention without Interference Since 2009, ENSCO 8500 Series rigs have a history of outstanding performance with greater than 95% utilization. They have taken part in key exploration achievements in North America, South America and Asia. ENSCO 8503 holds the record for the deepest well ever drilled in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

ENSCO 8500 Series rigs have successfully been used to perform well intervention programs in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico including workover and acid simulation as well as plug and abandonment services. Customers benefit greatly from the versatility of these rigs to quickly and efficiently switch between drilling and well intervention projects without interference.
